Dear Readers, For the benefit of those who read the article in last week's Times-Advocate about my illegal sewer connection, I would like to reply. The article strongly suggests that, as a former member of council, I drafted a sewer by-law for others to follow which I now deliberately ignore myself. This, if it were true, brands me as a person lacking in principles and integrity. First of all, the sewer by-law was passed in 1966 and my term as councillor began in 1971. Besides, as I recall, little sewer work was done during my term. Consequently, there was little occasion to even discuss the by- law. It was the Building By-law that I worked on, which does not cover sewers. I would also like to point out that I personally informed the Clerk on the day prior to the commencement of the work that I was proceeding with the sewer installation the next day, The trench was never backfilled for two days. Now, if the Clerk's office arranges these inspections, why was my sewer never inspected at that time instead of waiting until now? Moreover, I can't understand how council can hope to make valid judgements and be so badly informed. I phoned the mayor only a couple of days prior to the last council meeting and discussed the sewer with him as I was told he was making enquiries. I wanted to avoid misunderstandings and I was satisfied that he understood the facts. After reading the article in the paper, (I didn't receive my letter from Council until Friday at 4 p.m.), I phoned five councillors and not one could tell me what regulation or by-law I was con- 4 travening to make the connection illegal. The drains' chairman was one of the five. Furthermore, not one coun- cillor knew that my present house is still on septic tank and has never been connected. And, finally, not one councillor made any attempt to ask me any questions about how the con- nection was made. Obviously, their decision was based on heresy and assumptions. Last February I first ap- proached Mr. MacMillan, the You're Never Too Old To Hear Better Montreal, P.Q. — A free offer 4, of special interest to those who hear but do not understand words has been announced by Beltone. A non-operating model of the smallest Beltone aid ever made will be given absolutely free to anyone answering this advertisement. Try it to see how it is worn in the privacy of your own home without cost or obligation of any kind. It's yours to keep, free. It weighs less than a third of an ounce, and it's all at ear level, in one unit. No wires lead from body to head. These models are free, so we suggest you write for yours now. Again, we repeat, there is no cost, and certainly no obliga- tion. Thousands have already been mailed, so write today to Dept. 0000, ©Beltone Elec- tronics of Canada, Ltd., 3637 Metropolitan Blvd. E., Mon- treal 455, P. Q. 9217 drains' chairman, to discuss this sewer with him. Since that time, not one councillor (with the ex- ception of Bruce Shaw) has ever phoned or approached me or, to my knowledge, has ever set foot on the property with the idea of communicating or becoming informed, Yet the reeve drives by every day. I decided a year ago that I was, not going to accept the respon- sibility of being a part of this type of decision-making and so I resigned from council, If I share blame for not having an inspection carried out, then I accept that. I don't believe that by-laws (or rules) are made to be broken. But I do not appreciate being branded by false ac- cusations and slanderous in- sinuations. Yours truly, Ex-Councillor, Ken Ottewell. Dear Sir: So far as council is concerned I think they have more to do than worry about dogs over 20 lbs. I think our sidewalks are a disaster area for older folks not mentioning the condition of the roads. I am the proud owner of a dog over 20 lbs. and he is treated as one of the family. A dog given a bit of love returns it a thousand times by guarding your home and children and never complains about being penned up 12 months of the year. Stastistics show that dogs have saved more children and adults lives by heroic deeds by a greater majority than the few that have been bitten. I think older people should own a large dog and there would be far less beatings and murders and they would have a companion in whom they could put their trust, I think parents to-day put too much responsibility on their children. If children are properly supervised by their parents they would not be running loose on other peoples property. You never hear of the children who are taken to hospital badly beaten and maimed for life by sick parents or those locked in cars while parents are shopping. I think some mothers should take a lesson from a female dog who guards her puppies night and day with her life and makes sure they are properly fed and never lets them stray from her watchful eyes. Now you please tell me who the dumb animal is? Bev Lindenfield Oct. 8, 1973 Sir: I would like to renew my subscription and express openly with my signature attached. When we left the farm we left a fine good dog behind. I had always seen to it they had their shots for rabies. I have had to contend with running the lawn mower through dog droppings and cleaning the mower out later and sometimes had to turn my head sidewise from the stinking mess. I stepped off the ladder from cleaning windows into a mess and took my shoes and threw them into the garbage. One day I watched from the window while a lady let her dog, on a leash, do his thing on our lawn and I used a shovel to clean it up. It would never have done for me to have told her what I thought of ix.r cunning act. My work takes me in and out of many farms. I have never seen so many dogs and so many very vicious dogs, I have been bitten several times and now the owners rush to protect the dog. Saturday evening I was visiting with John Park, Lucan who was attacked by 2 dogs that were on a leash, He told me, he was sitting by the water in Florida with his shirt off. The dogs broke loose by taking the leash out of the hands of a boy, • I have forgotten how many stitches were used to sew up the wounds - many he will always carry with him. The boy fled the scene, Mr. Park had passed out and at this point the dogs left him for dead. A lady who saw it all from a distance probably saved his life By MRS. Schedule set for minors The schedule has been com- pleted for teams participating in the Shamrock Minor hockey league this coming winter. Involved in the regular schedule will be teams from Exeter, Lambeth, Strathroy, St. Thomas, St. Marys and Lambeth. Lucan is included in an exhibition schedule with the other six clubs. The schedule for the Exeter teams is as follows with tripleheaders • on each date in- volving pee wees, bantams and midgets. October 29 - Exeter at Strathroy 31 - Lambeth at Exeter November 5 - Exeter at St. Thomas 14 - Strathroy at Exeter 16 - Exeter at Lambeth 21 - St. Thomas at Exeter December 1 - Exeter at St. Marys 5 - St. Marys at Exeter 10 - Exeter at Strathroy 12 - Lambeth at Exeter 14 - Exeter at Lucan 17 - Exeter at St. Thomas 19 - Lucan at Exeter 22 - Exeter at St. Marys by getting 141p in time to prevent him from bleeding to death. It so happened the dogs were insured, all of Mr, Park's ex- penses were paid and a set- tlement made. I could relate many more savage attacks on children by dogs and my deepest sympathy to the parents of the child mauled and chewed by a dog last week, If people want dogs: 1) have them treated with rabies shots; 2) keep them off peoples lawns and shrubs; 3) insurance should be compulsory to take care of damage they do, and owners forced to clean up the dirty mess they leave on other people's property; 4) and if owners can't be responsible for their dogs, for goodness sake get rid of them. V Readers write About sewer connections, dogs Support The Local Option Vote For Bosanquet Your support is asked for in connection with the vote that will be held on Wednesday the 17th day of October, 1973. We have been successful in attracting to the township in the recreational area, a first class din- ing establishment, "The Sailfish Inn." This establishment wishes to obtain a dining lounge licence for the sale of liquor with meals, in order that it may offer to the public the same facilities being provided by all other dining lounges in the province, But in order to do so the vote to be held on Wednesday the 17th, must have your sup- port at the polls. Such a dining facility is very desirable in the area and many local residents have given their sup- port to the request by signing the petition that brought about this vote, The vote is for the right to serve Liquor with, meals only and is not a vote that would permit the establishment of cocktail lounges or beverage rooms in the township.
