Seniors start slowly
In the senior game, the South
Huron club started slowly and
allowed Strathroy to take a 6-0
lead early in the first quarter.
The locals came on strong to
score four quick touchdowns and
moved in front 26.6 at half time.
Paul Truemner lugged the ball
over the line from two yards out
for the first south Huron score
after he and Gary Lavier moved
the ball in close on good runs.
Early in the second quarter,
Strathroy fumbled and Stephan
Orenchuk recovered for the
Panthers and it took only six
plays to notch the second Panther
TD. This time it was Gary Lavier
hitting paydirt. Paul Runnals
was successful on a soccer style
kick for the convert.
The third South Huron touch-
down came as quarter back
Perry Stover hit Brian Tuckey
with a pass at the Strathroy 25
yard line and he carried the play
in all covered 52 yards. Runnalls
again converted.
Late in the second period, Dave
Lovell starting from the
Strathroy 36 yard line carried
half the distance in one carry and
Stover again hit Tuckey for six
points.
The only score of the third
quarter came on another Stover
to Tuckey pass on an identical
play to the previous two touch-
downs. This time the play
covered 26 yards. Paul Runnalls
booted his third convert of the
game and the score was 33-6.
Wayne Regier completed the
South Huron scoring by going 37
.yards after breaking a couple of
tackles. Runnalls again con-
verted.
Dave Lovell was the top ground
gainer for the Panthers with a
total of 94 yards in nine cracks at
the line. Stover was good on four
of seven passes, all to Tuckey for
a total of 109 yards.

Juniors score first
The junior Panthers scored
their first touchdown in the
second quarter on a concerted
drive which moved the ball from
their own 15 yard line across the
Strathroy goal.
Quarterback John Van Gerwen
moved the team well with good
carries by Doug Mclsaac and
Kevin Baker, Van Gerwen ran 35
yards himself on a successful
sweep. Mclsaac scored the
touchdown from the three yard
line, The convert was good from
the toe of Steve Jennison.
Jennison played a strong game
on defence in the first half
making numerous key tackles to
keep the Strathroy club bottled
up,
Late in the third period, Van
Gerwen hit Steve Knight with a
good pass and he galloped 70
yards for the second South Huron
major of the afternoon, Jennison
again kicked the extra point.
Strathroy scored the only,
touchdown in the fourth quarter
which was unconverted, They
rallied again late in the game but
the South Huron defensive line
headed by Greg Beattie, Steve
Jennison and Bill Baker was able
to contain the visitors.

FOR AI,L GOOD SPORTS
By Ross Haugh
Seniors are impressive
ood start for school grid teams
Meet Listowel next
Mixed
seasons
This is probably the busiest time of the year as far as
the intermingling of sports events are concerned. This
applies not only to the national sport scene but also on the
local level.
This weekend right around Exeter two sports were in
the limelight while plenty of news of a third was forthcom-
ing.
The football season started Saturday at South Huron
District High School and we will quickly add - on an op-
timistic note. The local clubs both won their games against
Strathroy and the senior win came in extremely impressive
fashion.
Ron Bogart has assembled a big club and their 40-6 win
over Strathroy looks like the start of a real good year.
Perry Stover gives the club experience at quarterback
and Saturday he hit end Brian Tuckey with four passes good
for 109 yards.
Dave Lovell was the top ball carrier, picking up 94 yards
in nine cracks at the opposition line and Stephan Orenchuk
led the defensive team with six key tackles.
Junior coach Doug Ellison appears to have plenty of
material to work with and with a couple of games under
their belts should give a good account of themselves. The
juniors downed Strathroy 14-6 in Saturday's first test of the
year.
Sunday the baseball season locally came to a close as
the Exeter Expos dropped a 3-0 decision to Campbellville in
the second game of the Ontario Association Intermediate
"B" final. Campbellville won the first game on their home
field a week earlier and took the championship as the result
of Sunday's win here.
The 1973-74 hockey season is much closer to us than
most people realize. Officials of two area hockey clubs have
announced plans for the first practice sessions of the year.
.4, 4, .4.
Hawks first
The Exeter junior Hawks will be first to hit the ice as
they work out for the first time Sunday afternoon at the
Huron Park arena from 4 to 6 p.m.
Coach Bob White, who will be back to handle the club
again has also scheduled practices for September 26 at 8.30
p.m. and September 29 at 4 p.m.
White has issued an invitation to any Exeter and district
youngsters to attend the first workouts. The majority of last
year's club will be back but everyone will be given a fair
chance at making the team.
Failing to qualify because of the age limit are goalie
John Hayter, defenceman Jim Guenther and forward Brian
Bestard.

Jets start, too
The Lucan-Ilderton Jets last year's OHA Senior "B"
champs are also raring to go. Coach Jack Nairn has called
his first practice for Monday night, September 24 at 7 p.m.
at the Huron Park arena.
Nairn has also put out the call for prospective players.
Anyone wishing to try out with the Jets can show up Monday
for practice or give manager Don Urbshott a call at 666-
1800.
The Jets are entered in a newContinental Seniorleague.
Included in the new grouping are teams from Sterling
Heights, Michigan and New Hamburg in addition to
Bothwell, Durham, Stratford, London, Woodstock and
Ingersoll, all members of the Senior "B" league a year ago.
The Jets in addition to playing a 36 game schedule in
their own league will make two exhibition jaunts into the
United States. They are scheduled for a two game series in
Erie, Pennsylvania on November 23 and 24 and travel to
Reno, Nevada for games on January 25 and 26.
Plenty of interest in the Jets will come again this year
from this area. Four regulars on the club last year from Ex-
eter are expected to be back in action.
They are Barry Baynham, Bill Fairbairn and Terry and
Bill Bourne. John Hayter who has been the mainstay of the
Exeter Hawks for the past three or four years with his ex-
cellent goal tending is expected to attend the Jets practices.
The Jets have another excellent prospect heading for
practice. He is high scoring Rick Fyfield who led the St.
Marys Lincolns in scoring in two of the past three seasons.
It appears to us as if Hayter and Fyfield could be a good
combination for the Jets with one keeping the puck out of
the net at one end and the other scoring at the opposite end
of the rink.
The first league game for the Jets has them playing host
to the Bothwell Barons at the Ilderton arena on Friday, Oc-
tober 26 at 8.30.

Expos fail to get any runs
in provincial baseball final
Campbellville a week earlier was
12-5.
In Sunday's game, the Expo
bats were extremely quiet as
they could come up with only two
base hits off the offerings of
Garnet Mitchell.
In fact, the Campbellville right
hander faced only 32 batters in
the regulation nine inning game,
On only one occasion did the
Expos manage to get a runner as
far as third base. This was in the
eighth inning when with one out,
Bill Farquhar walked, went to
second as Jim Pfaff's grounder
was muffed and to third on force-
out at second on a grounder from
the bat of Rick Schilbe,
The first Exeter base runner
came in the bottom of the third
inning when Jim Pfaff singled to
right field. The next batter Rick
Schilbe drew a walk but he was
quickly picked off first base by
catcher Ray Mitchell to retire the
side.
The other two Expo runners to
find the base paths were Barry
Baynham and Bill Fairbairn in
the fourth. Baynham was safe on
a fielder's choice and Fairbairn
singled.
Jim Pfaff on the mound for the
Exeter club also turned in a fine
performance. He gave up only six
hits, all in separate innings but
errors by his team-mates put him
in trouble a couple of times.
Campbellville scored their runs
in single fashion in the first, third
and fourth frames,
