Council agreed to Predate:4 DALEY'S WEEKLY COMMENTS Sophie Richards, formerly of Lucan, passed away Tuesday at Strathmere Lodge, in her 68th year, Miss Richards was a companion-housekeeper for the late Mrs. Henry Hodgins, C. Haskett & Son Funeral Home was in charge of the funeral on Thursday and in- terment was at St. James Cemetery, Pallbearers were Clarence David, Bill Larnbourne, Cecil Armitage, Arthur Abbott, Ronald and Wayne Carroll, and flower bearers were Ian and Brenda Carroll. The friends returned to the home of Mrs, Cliff Abbott, who is a daughter of Mrs. Hodgins, She was assisted by two sisters, Mrs. Harry Carroll and Mrs. Henry Mullins. well named "Victory" team the suggestion. It was also decided that council Should hold a special meeting with the road engineer, Paul McIntyre and a representative of the Ministry of Transportation and Communication to finalize the subdivision agreement. Council received approval for construction of water mains on Alice St, from the Ministry of the Environment; and also received a letter from the Ministry of Transportation and Com- munication stating that they have directed .a second grant in the amount of $3,700 to council. A drain on Maple St. is to be lowered one and one-half feet so as to drain Maple St. Council also decided to provide water services on the vacant lots on Market St. The reeve also told council that the sidewalk from the OPP building to David Ashworth's is in bad condition and that he is trying to get the county to replace it and to build a sidewalk from Shipways to the 4th concession. In other business, council decided to tender for the sale of the former fire hall property. They also decided to honor 'Amite Clint Rodgins who has been instituted in the United States Harness Writers Hall of Fame, He spent his early days in the locality and Wean was his main place of recreation, The council will make a presentation to Mr, Hodgins, along with the Turf Club and the province of Ontario at Clint Hodgins Day, Sunday at the Wean Fair, At a special meeting between council, the planning board and the committee of adjustment, George Noyes was appointed to replace George Paul who had to resign his position on the plan- ning board, Norman Steeper was appointed chairman of the planning board and Murray Hodgins was appointed chairman of the committee of adjustment. At the same meeting council turned down an application from George English for a building permit for a four-unit apartment building because it was contrary to zoning by-laws in several respects, Bills and accounts totalling $3,877,62 were approved. Council was approached by Eric Wally, who is constructing the homes. lie was told by Reeve Ivan Hearn that the reeve had personally attended a Biddulph township council meeting and informed them that it was their responsibility to build a proper line to serve the homes. He also informed Mr. Wally that three services are now coming off a three-inch plastic hose and that in no way can this go on. The village of Lucan may soon have its own newspaper. Ron ('rudge, a former area man who has been working in Listowel, approached council to "ascertain information with regard to the establishment of a newspaper'in the village. He told council that he is planning to start publication in a couple of weeks and that he hopes to distribute the paper free of charge for the first two months, With regard to their own waterworks system, council passed a by-law raising the water rate from $3 to $4 per month inside the village and from $5 to $6 outside the village, The $1 per month rise in bills is required to maintain the system accounts and is effective August 1. At the meeting, council met with Mr. Barber from Kleinfeldt and Associates, who has replaced Mr. Nicklom, to discuss the finalizing of the Butler sub- division agreement. He told council that there is some shaping up of road shoulders and other work to be completed yet, and suggested IDA DREES The funeral of the late Ida (Peiper) Drees, Elginfield, mother of Mrs. George McGrath, was held from the C. Haskett and Son Funeral Home and St. Patrick's Church, Biddulph Monday with Rev. Father F, Henry saying the funeral mass. Interment was in St. Patrick's gt Cemetery. Pallbearers were Wallace Haygart, James O'Shea, John Egan, Alidor Cocquyt, John Dewan and Frank Van Praet. Biddulph okays official plan The official plan for Biddulph Township was approved at the August meeting and it will now be forward to Toronto for approval. The Northwest Middlesex official plan was studied and comments prepared to send to Toronto, A resolution was received from the Ontario Beef Improvement Assoc. requesting that Council encourage warble fly control. Four objections were received to the proposal to close Stanley St. in Clandeboye, Building permits were authorized as follows: to Kenneth Hoar, lot 13 S.B. for a house; to Clarence and Bob Hardy, lot 14, con, 5, for an implement shed; to Wilfred Garrett, lot 30, con. 12 for an implement shed; to James McCarthy, lot 23 con. 10, for an implement shed; to Arthur Cunningham, lot 31, con. 2 for an addition to barn; to James Ryan, lot 24, con. 10 for an addition to barn; to Kenneth Eaton, lot 15, con 2 for addition to barn and silo; to Alan Scott, lot 30, con. 3 for a silo. In any event following the Lucan game the gang converged on Branch 540 where they were treated to a pot luck supper and from reports received it was "UMMM UMMM GOOD." The members are reminded that 540's annual corn roast has not been forgotten - just keep your eyes on the bulletin boards in the lounge for the date and time. Comrade President has asked that all members muster at the Legion Hall, Lucan at 12:00 noon Sunday, August 19th so that we can be ready to move off on parade at 1.00 p.m. What's this all about? Why it's the date of the Lucan Lions Monster Parade and we have been asked to parade and show our colors, The Mitchell Legion Band will be in attendance and we will be marching with them, Any Branch who would care to parade with us will be most welcome - so bring along your Branch Colors and let's show the people that the Legion is still in the centre of things. Sure is hard tho' trying to get oriented into writing a weekly column after a lazy summer. As the old saying goes, 'Nothing ventured nothing gained! So here goes!! Trust you all had a great summer and didn't get too sun burned; Now as the cooler weather sets in and mother is eagerly awaiting the day school starts so she can get the kids out of her hair, just a wee word of caution, It won't be long before the school buses will he operating on the highways once again, remember to stop when meeting or following a school bus when their lights are flashing. Did you happen to see the challenge bail game last Sunday afternoon at the Biddulph School, Lucan between Branch 540 and Victory Branch, London. Well let me tell you, Victory Branch hasn't got that name for nothing when they walloped the 540's 19 to 4. I understand there will be a return match to be held at Silverwood's Park, London on Sunday September 9th, The Lucan lads have it all laid on to win this one. Police investigate six accidents, few injuries Lucan OPP investigated only six accidents last week, none of them serious. On August 7 at 6:40 p.m. two cars collided at the corner of the 8th Con. London Twp. and the Denfield Sideroad. Drivers of the cars were William _Hartman, RR Arva, and flovArd Sheldon RR 1, Ilderton. Mr, & Mrs. Steve Storey and family spent the month of July on a camping trip to the western provinces, visiting the Calgary Stampede, Banff, 'Jasper, etc. and Al Oeming's Game Farm, where John and Mark were ec- static about the animals in their almost natural environments. Mr. & Mrs. Cliff Abbott spent a few days with Mr. & Mrs. Allen Tindall at their cottage at Lion's Head. Mr, & Mrs. Clarence Frost report a wonderful month-long trip to the west coast where they visited a niece of Mrs. Frost's and also spent some time with Mr. & Mrs. David Lang (nee Linda Currie). The Frosts were among those held up by the C.N. strike and flew to Toronto where they were met on Sunday by Mr. & Mrs. Howard Currie. Mrs. Robert Jenkins, whose husband was a former principal at the public school here, called on Miss L.E. Abbott at McCor- mick Home last Friday. Mr. Jenkins, though now retired, is busy doing supply teaching in London Schools. Mrs. Robert Coleman's name was accidentally omitted from the list of guests present at a birthday dinner held August 5 at the home of Mr. & Mrs. Clarence Haskett, Mr. & Mrs, Clarence Haskett were honored on their 30th wedding anniversary when 22 relatives from Cambridge, London, Denfield and Lucan, gathered Sunday at the home of their daughter Nancy and her husband, Mr. & Mrs. Emerson Gill, Southcott Pines. The family presented them with a white wrought-iron lawn set plus other miscellaneous gifts. Mr. & Mrs. Harold Butler, Jr. and Marlene, entertained Rev. and Mrs. E.D. Thornton and Rick for a barbecue at their mobile home in Ipperwash, Saturday afternoon and evening. Mr. and Mrs. Ed Melanson were weekend guests with Mr. & Mrs. Bert Thompson at their summer home in Pike Bay. Swimming team to enter area meet at $600. Constable W. Hodgins investigated. Later that evening on Main St. of Ailsa Craig, 10 year old Becky Jantzi, 198 George St. Ailsa Craig and her friend, Maris Epp, 9, of 187 King St. Parkhill were riding a bicycle that collided with a car ' inekfrig out a driveway. The car was driven by James Walsh, 153 Main St., Ailsa Craig. The two children suffered cuts and bruises. Constable C. Auger investigated. Last Wednesday night just before 8 p.m. an army jeep on training manoeuvres skidded into a ditch at the corner of+ County Rd. 41 and County Rd. 28, London Twp. Driver of the vehicle was 17 year old Loretta Cruden of 148 Perth Ave. London. Gordon McCallum, 18, 636 Santa Monica Rd., London was a passenger, Both suffered minor injuries. Investigating officer, Constable W. Hodgins estimated damage at $500. Friday at 4 p.m. a car and truck were involved in a rear end collision on Hwy 4, north of the Mt. Carmel Rd, William Edwards, 190 Main St., Exeter, and Frederick Pearen, 400 Griffith St., London, drivers of the two vehicles, were not in- jured.. Damage was estimated at $700. Constable W. Hodgins in- vestige ted. At 6:30 p.m. Friday, a car driven by Calvin Marshall, RR 4 Denfield went off the road and hit a bridge abutment on Con, Rd. 13 east of County Rd. 23, London Twp. Damage was estimated at $175, The investigating officer was Constable G. Barker. Joseph Nagle, 917 Wellington St., London, was the driver of a car that collided with three new cars parked on the Nevin Motors car lot at 134 Main St., Lucan. The accident occurred at 12:40 a,m. on Sunday. Damage to the Nagel car was $500, Each of the parked cars suffered $150 damage. Constable G. Wilcox investigated. Captain Dykeman predicts that his team will bombard the Clinton netminder with many goals. Sports The Lucan Women's team won their first "play-off" game with Ailsa Craig Wednesday. All other games were rained out. In the P.W.S.U. Intermediate C game with Strathroy. on Sunday, the local team lost and is finished in that league. Public swimming has been frequently interrupted this week by thunderstorms. This, however, did not keep away the crowds! The Lucan swim team, "The Flying Fish" put up a very good showing at St. Mary's Thursday. Due to the unavoidable absence of some of the "stars" the team was unable to obtain the usual number of firsts. However, they are planning to remedy this during the regional meet on August 22 at Dorchester, Plans are also underway to enter a team in the South Western Ontario swimming meet August 25 in London, Leader Patrols are busy preparing for Thursday's exam which will be held at Thames Pool, London. "Good Luck" all! They have worked very hard, The last session of 'swimming lessons will begin Monday, with approximately 110 registered, and will continue until August 24, Irish 9 In' the game with Beechwood the Irish 9 won 14 to 4, making an 8th win in a row which puts them in second place in the League with 16 wins and 6 hisses. Dennis Burt who were married Saturday, and also by friends of the late Sophie Richard. Lois Legg, Music B. presided at the organ King Abel, Music B. played a trumpet sulo. Miss Legg has resigned as Music Director effective Sept. 1. She has ac- cepted a position in London. Rev. R.A. Carson preached on the theme 'Finding God Interesting'. He said God is in- teresting because He is the God of the universe. But even so, God is interested in details ie, you and me. Although a God of judgment and love God is forgiving. God is also a God of surprises and this makes Him interesting. Mr. Carson said that if we are to help people get interested in the state of their souls we should show them how interesting God is by reading the Bible. Pentecostal Rev. E.D. Thornton preached his farewell service Sunday speaking on "The Power of the Holy Spirit which is promised to us". Rick Thornton lead the singing and Marlene Butler sang a solo. Several carloads of members and friends attended the opening service at the week long camp at Cedar Valley Pentecostal Holiness Camp near Arthur, on Sunday evening. A former minister, Rev.
