Impressed by wide open spaces
"Our first impression was
green."
So said Armin Schlenker and
his wife Elvira about their first
trip to Canada.
The two are schoolteachers in
Goeppingen, Germany which is
near Stuttgart, Last week they
were visiting relatives, Rev,
Armin Schlenker and his family
in Credi ton,
One of the problems they
have had to adjust to, since their
arrival in late July is the size of
the country,
"The distances, spaces and
room!" said Armin with a shake
of his head. "In Germany you can
walk from one place to another."
"We can't get over it," said his
wife.
Houses over there are crowded
together so that a little bit of lawn
is something reserved only for
the wealthy.
Although there are plenty of
parks around for the people to
enjoy, they too are extremely
small compared to Canadian
ones. "Over there, every square
inch is valuable," he said.
But there are resort areas
within an hour or two's drive
from any area in the country,
Lots of families though spend
their Sundays just walking
through the countryside.
"Many will walk for five or six
hours." said Elvira,
Another pastime enjoyed by
the German people is soccer. It's
played all over," Armin said.
"There is also a lot of volleyball
since the Olympics."
What else have they noticed
about Canada? "It's very clean
and well-kept," they said.
While Elvira has not had a
chance to do much shopping she
has noticed that our meat prices
are very cheap. Yes, cheap,
Some products here are worth
twice as much in Germany.
Germans don't have as many
monstrous shopping plazas
common to the North American
cities either. Instead they still do
the shopping in small individual
shops in a downtown setting.
When asked what Canada
meant to the average German,
there was a short pause.
"A few years ago," said Armin
"there was an advertising slogan
which called Canada the country
of unlimited opportunity."
"It was a very popular country
then, especially to immigrate to.
But now they seem to go to
Australia,"
"I think Canada has lost some
of her reputation because of the
United States," he went on, "In
the minds of many Germans you
are from North America and
therefore Americans. They don't
separate the two,"
"And yet we get news of the
Queen's visit, the commonwealth
conference and your elections."
said Elvira.
One reason that they can get
North American news is because
there are two armed services'
bases nearby. One is American
and the other Canadian. There is
also a Canadian broadcasting
program on radio for Canadian
servicemen,
Elvira and Armin both teach
English to German children from
ages ten to 10. The school sysitem
is very different over there and
still based on the traditional
system that existed under the
monarchy.
Children start at the age of six
and progress not in terms of
grades by merely by age group.
They are required to stay in the
educational system until the age
of 14,
But when they reach ten they
must decide on a future career in
order to choose their program. A
five year program trains
technicians, mechanics and
craftsmen and the six year one
produces accountants and such.
In order to go on to university
and enter the professions, a
student must take the nine year
program. And its not very easy to
get into university.
"You practically have to be
outstanding." said Armin.
Both Elvira and Armin had to
lake five years of university to
get their teaching degree. Now
they are in one of Germany's
more secure professions. They
cannot be fired and are paid by
the government.
"A lot of people try and get into
teaching," they said,
One of the major differences
that they noticed between the
Canadian and German systems
was that teachers could go to
summer and night classes to
improve their qualifications.
"Its the most amazing thing for
me," said Armin, "that teachers
can do this in the summer.
German universities are closed
in the summer."
During their visit they had a
chance to visit Western in London
and sit in on some lectures.
The German school system is a
serious social problem because it
divides the people into three
separate classes,
"There is a lot of pressure to
change," said Armin,
For the rest of the summer they
plan to rent a car and tour some
Eastern cities before returning to
the classroom in September,
