"They're still just animals. We haven't had any trouble with the squirrels until this year. They're eating our corn and getting into the garage after the seeds now." One of them even dug up bean seeds from the garden and planted them in Charlie's front lawn, But he still likes to feed his furry visitors. Anyway, last year he purchased 500 pounds of seeds from farmers to keep up with the demand. "It's something to keep you busy." he said. The squirrels probably don't mind a bit. By MRS. CHARLES FRIEND, Clerk, Township of Hibbert 30:31e ADVERTISING The shortest route to business profits REFRESHMENTS FOR SALE — Pedestrians along Exeter's main street this week may take advantage of a youthful refreshment stand. Shown above dishing out fruit drinks are Bert and Wendy McNeil. WELL FED SQUIRRELS — The squirrels in the vicinity of Exeter's River- view park are well fed thanks to the daily visits of neighbour Charlie Hoffman. Eight or nine squirrels receive their regular doily portion of sunflower seeds and nuts from Hoffman who lives on Hill street, next to the park. T-A photo Squirrels best friend provides daily feast If ever anyone in Exeter should want to know what the town squirrels are doing these days they should go and ask Charlie Hoffman, After almost seven years of feeding the squirrel population in Riverview Park, Charlie should know. He also knows what they like to eat and what's good for them. "I feed them sunflower seeds and walnuts because it puts a good finish on their coat and they start to shine." he said. He picks up the nuts in the fall and cracks them before feeding them. "If you don't, they bury them." If you really want to get on the good side of a squirrel though, you take a nut, crack it and let it start to sprout. That, Charlie says, they really like. If you feed them corn kernels they will only eat the best part leaving the rest of the kernel unless they are really hungry. He can also tell you about one mother squirrel who does not like eating walnuts like the other squirrels in her neighbourhood. Instead she prefers only the sunflower seeds. Then there was the white squirrel that used to climb the back screen door looking for his breakfast. The white squirrel was the first one that Charlie started to feed. "It was tamer than the others." he said, he said. "But it was very ragged looking. I like the grey ones with the real bushy tails." In the morning, Charlie goes out and whistles to call his guests to breakfast. He also goes out in the early evening because some of them don't like to conic for the first feeding. "I feed them more now because there isn't too much around for them to eat. But it isn't good to make them too dependent on you," The squirrels will almost come up and eat out of his hand but Charlie doesn't encourage that, Then they get too tame and forget to be afraid of strangers who might not be as understanding, Sometimes his squirrels are joined by a few cardinals, chickadees or blue jays, One male cardinal will even talk back to Charlie when he whistles to him, "You can get pretty close to him but he's not as friendly as the squirrels." "This is just a hobby though." Charlie reminds you. "I used to farm and I'd rather do that than live in town. But I don't think I could stay here if I didn't live near the park," But in case you think that he gets sentimental about his little friends, he'll tell you about. how Times-Advocate, August ,1973 Page 13 11/ftwaft•i% Ml8FAR LANE REAL ESTATE BROKER LONDON 434-8824 WE ARE PEOPLE PLEASERS TRY US!
