COME AND GET IT — Mary Ann Gielen, one of the leaders at Camp Care, dishes out porridge to the
children after their night's sleep in the barn. They were also given a drink of fresh milk from Harry Gielen's

Youth grant,
been the editor of the Northern
Lights Bulletin, a trl-annual
magazine which serves as a link
between the Northern Canada
Women's Institutes and to
acquaint southern W.I. members
with their northern fellow
members.
The NCWI operates in the
Yukon and Mackenzie Basin of the
N.W, territories.
In the summer of 1961 she was
asked to set up a public relations
program for the same
organization, at that time only
recently organized,
Part of this program, designed
in consultation with Mrs, William
Hough, Stratford, the FWIC
fieldworker was the Northern
Lights Bulletin.
This program also consisted of
a 15 minute W.I. radio
programme which was carried
north by CBC Northern Services
for two and a half years.
She was also privileged to
attend the first NCWI convention
in Inuvik in 1960. After her ex-
periences she wrote a short book
entitled "Into the North".
Mrs. Wilson said she was
impressed with the churches
there. The Roman Catholic
church is built in the shape of an
igloo, she said with decorations
done by the Eskimoes.
In Aklavik, the Anglican
church has a painting depicting
the Nativity scene. But instead of
wise men and shepherds there
are Mounties and Eskimo hun-
ters with Huskey dogs and er-
mine pelts for gifts.
"The Eskimo people are
happier than the Indians," Mrs.
Wilson said, "They like to play
games and are very musical."
Her work in the Institute has
given her the opportunity to
travel outside Canada too. As a
provincial delegate in 1947, she
attended an international con-
ference in Colombo, Ceylon. It
was the first Associated Country
Women of the World conference
ever held in Eastern Europe and
it included a tour of 20 other
countries.
Besides being a delegate she
has served locally in all offices of
the Granton branch and is now
the District Tweedsmuir History
Curator, This means that it is her
responsibility to record the
history of the local branch.
She has served as Historical
Research Convener for the
London area and on the
Provincial Board as director for
Middlesex county, subdivision 21
from 1954 to 1957,
As a provincial director she
had the opportunity and
responsibility of organizing and
hosting at the reception for Mrs,
Alice Berry, OBE, of Australia,
president of the Associated
Country Women of the World.
For the next three years she
had the job of public relations on
a national scale for the FWIC.
When the Institute was asked to
help the Canadian Broadcasting
Commission with research on
radio and TV, she was respon-
sible for conducting four
evaluation surveys, two
provincial and two national.
Mrs. Wilson also attended the
Commission's hearings in Ottawa
when the FWIC's rec-
commendations were presented,
Many of their suggestions were
subsequently adopted.
In keeping with one of her
organization's educational aims,
she has compiled the history of
Blanshard township, Woodharn
Church and many family
histories. She also co-operated
with the Historic Branch of the
Department of Tourism in the
erection of plaques to mark
historic sites at Fryfogel Inn, Col.
Van Egmond's grave and the St.
Marys Museum plaque by the
town council.
Along with Mrs. Harmon
Morton she wrote the North
Middlesex District W.I. history
for their 50th anniversary.
As if the Women's Institute was
not enough to keep her busy Mrs.
Wilson has been a member of the
Kirk ton Fair Board for 30 years
and involved with the advertising
for the successful Kirkton Annual
Garden Party.
Mrs. Wilson and her husband
live in the oldest all-frame two-
storey house in the township. It
was built in 1850 and still contains
family heirlooms.
Before her marriage and active
participation in the W.I. she was
an elementary school teacher in
Esquesing, Blair and Blanshard.
