This prompted one of our Crediton friends Emmery Fahrner to bring in a clipping from the Exeter Advocate of 1911 telling all about a game between Exeter and the Crediton stars. Emmery better known as "Bissett" those days is the only member of the 1911 Crediton club who is still living. On the team of that year there were five Fahrners. In addi- tion to Emmery there was Everett "King". Roy, Ervin and Herb. We would like to present the write-up of this game which was played on June 26, 1911 as follows: "About four hundred enthusiastic baseball fans saw the return game on the local diamond Monday night when for the first time in several seasons, Exeter defeated their old opponents the Crediton Stars 7-6. And to say that the locals and their supporters were highly pleased is to express it mildly, and all the more so since it was no chance victory but a hard fought game in which the team that played the best ball won out. There were not over half-a-dozen errors on each side although they were usually very costly but the result is too good to mar it with any adverse criticism. Carling for the locals pitched superb ball and to cap the climax scored the winning run which tickled him and his admirers mighti- ly. The playing of Steer on first and Hoskins behind the home plate are specially worthy of mention while the others on the home team played creditable ball. The Crediton boys put up their usual game with "King" Fahrner doing the pitching. King has a most disconcerting smile but it did not stay with him throughout the game as it usually does. Along about the middle of the game the locals began to hit him freely, the smile wore off, he threw a wild one or two and King was making a little trip in the flying machine. The locals kept on hitting hard and as will be seen by the score they stole the game from the visitors when they thought they had it cinched. Crediton made a great rally in the ninth, securing two and making the score a tie due largely to a series of bad throws by Exeter. At this point a dispute arose and it was sometime before the game was resumed. However, they finally did get started again and Carling scored the winning run with one man out in the ninth when the rain which had been threatening for sometime came pouring down and all rushed for shelter. Boyle and Holtz- mann umpired." Very interesting to read the account of the game. It's certainly a contrast to the style of writing used today in describing sporting events. Maybe we're missing something today in overlooking some of the personal angles shown in the report of more than 60 years ago. Hockey school dates A week ago we talked about the upcoming Huron summer hockey school at Huron Park but we failed to men- tion the dates. It starts on August 5 and concludes on September 1. We would like to congratulate one of the instructors at the'Huron hockey school on his new position which was an- nounced only recently. Ron Mason, who played his junior hockey in Seaforth will take over this fall as hockey coach at Bowling Green State University in Ohio. In seven years as head coach at Lake Superior State College in Michigan, Ron guided his teams to five NAIA national tournament championships. Ron's wife is the former Marion Bell of Hensall. A good sports program Glenn Webb and his cohorts in Dashwood appear to have come up with an excellent sports program for their up- coming Friedsburg Days which will be held next week on August 3 and 4. The first sporting attraction goes Friday night at eight o'clock when Ailsa Craig meets the Grand Bend Colonials in a soccer match. Soccer is quickly catching on in this area and sports fans could do worse than drop in to Dashwood and have a look. Saturday will be the big sports day with plenty of events on the program. At 1 p.m. the horse shoe pitchers will take over and will perform most of the afternoon. The parade which is always a crowd pleaser will hold forth beginning at 2 p.m. At three a pee wee softball game will pit Corbett against Zurich. At 4.00 registration will be held for the arm wrestlers in four weight divisions. Entries will be limited for these events. The divisions are for under 140 pounds, under 170, under 200 and an unlimited section for those weighing more than 200 pounds. The preliminaries in arm wrestling will go at 4.30 with the first round of tug-of-war set for five o'clock. The finals in both tests of strength will go alternatively at about 7 p.m. The final sports event of the day will be an intermediate softball game at eight o'clock with Mount Carmel facing the Zurich Pontiacs. The tug-of-war contest is all set with four teams entered and engaged in full training this week. The strong boys will be from Dashwood, Shipka, Mount Carmel and the Exeter Lions. We have heard rumours that several of the teams are using various methods of their training program. The Ex- eter Lions are testing their strength against large logs in Gerry Prout's bush after their easy conquest of the Exeter Centennial log sawing contest. At Mount Carmel it's been reported a team of horses is being used to get the strong men in shape. We haven't heard from the defending champions from Shipka but wouldn't be surprised if Cliff Russell uses one of his fuel trucks in a practice test. In two Western Ontario Athletic Association games this week, the Crediton midgets gained an even split. Thursday night on their home field, the Crediton youngsters scored a 7-4 victory over the Exeter midgets while Sunday afternoon their trip to Chesley was not as successful as they lost 8-7 in a ten inning contest. Chesley took a 4-0 lead after two innings of play only to have Crediton come back with four runs by the end of the sixth frame. Three runs in the top of the eighth sent Crediton into a 7-4 lead only to have Chesley score the same number in the bottom of the ninth as their first three batters were able to cross the plate. • Jack Gallinger tripled and scored on a wild pitch with two out in the tenth to give the Chesley club the victory. The first Crediton run came in the fourth when Alike Desjardine walked, moved up on two more free passes and scored on Mat- thew Muller's single.
