Three get
jail terms
Three persons living in a car in
the Exeter area were each
sentenced Monday to 15 days in
jail after pleading guilty to
break-ins at the Ausable Golf
Club near Exeter; Dave's Drive-
In at Zurich and an attempted
theft at a Zurich automatic car
wash, all on July 4.
In addition to the jail terms,
Paul William Cain and Michael
Thomas Mayea, both 18, and
Gerald Omer, Sylvestre, 17, all of
no fixed address, were placed on
probation for one year.
Also charged in connection
with the three incidents was an
Exeter juvenile who is scheduled
to appear in family court.
Provincial Judge Glenn Hays
was told the juvenile acted as a
guide for the trio, who were
unfamiliar with the area,leading
them to the golf club, the drive-in
and the car wash.
The charges were laid after an
investigation by Opp Constable
Don Mason, Cpl. Ray Brooks and
Exeter PD Constable James
McMeekin,
The guilty pleas were entered
during a Friday court ap-
pearance in Exeter.
Neitber, the Crown nor, .the
defence was able to indicate the
value of merchandise and money
stolen but both agreed a quantity
of change and cigarettes had
been taken from the drive-in as
well as several cartons of
cigarettes from the golf club.
Before sentencing, Judge Hays
said he was aware of testimony
that they had no money for food
but said the fact they had stolen
up to $20 to $25 worth of cigarettes
tended to diminish a defence that
their actions were necessary to
sustain life.
"It's not a spontaneous ac-
tion," the judge said. "Maybe a
great deal of planning doesn't go
into it in all cases but it (break,
enter and theft) is still a major
crime."
The judge told Mayea, and
Sylvestre, who gave their
parents' addresses as Tecumseh,
to report to Essex County
probation officials when they
have completed their terms in
provincial jail in Walkerton. He
ordered, Cain to report to Mid-
dlesex Coilinty probation officials
after serving his sentence, He
had given London as his parents'
home.
