The above picture of this championship curling team was taken around 1911. From left the gentlemen are Nelson Sheere, father of Mrs. Frank Creech; William Taman; and George Anderson, grandfather of Mrs. Art Broderick. The man on the right William Heaman. Benson Tuckey winner in first mayorality test Jan 4, 1951 Benson W. Tuckey, one-time reeve and a former warden of Huron County, became Exeter's first mayor in the municipal election New Year's Day when the status of Exeter was raised from village to town. In the mayorality contest Mr. Tuckey defeated A.J. Sweitzer who for the past two years was reeve of the village. His plurality was 205 votes. The standing: Tuckey 630; Sweitzer 425. In the race for the reeveship Larry Snider, last year's deputy reeve, defeated Henry Bierling 532 votes to 480. Mr. Bierling has been out of municipal politics for several years although in the past he served 131/2 years on the council under five reeves. For deputy-reeve, W.G. Cochrane was elected over Vernon Heywood, a member of last year's council. His majority was 171. With Mr. Snider he will represent Exeter at Huron County Council. While as a village Exeter elected three councillors, this year as a town six councillors were elected. Five of the six will take their seats at the council table for the first time. Heading the polls was Eugene Beaver, a Crediton boy, now an accountant with the Exeter Co-op. He polled 739 votes. Next in line were R.C. Dinney with 698; William McKenzie 651; William Webster 649; Andy Snelgrove 580; Roy Campbell 553; and Edward Brady, defeated, 500. Workers were out with their cars and a little over 61 percent of the available vote was polled. The returns were received at the office of Clerk C.V. Pickard. One of the first to congratulate the new mayor was the defeated candidate, A.J. Sweitzer. As soon as the results were known, the Exeter band paraded the Main St. followed by a procession of cars with the newly elected members. There was considerable horn blowing. In front of the post office Mayor- elect Tuckey mounted a truck and gave a short address thanking the ratepayers. Other members of the council followed with the exception of Reeve T-A March 21, 1940 Struck by car Gary Middleton, son of Mr. and Mrs. W.E. Middleton, had a narrow escape from a serious accident Saturday last when he ran into the path of an automobile on Main St. The little lad was watching a truck coming from one direction and when it had passed he darted across the road and was struck by a car going in the opposite direction to the truck. He was carried a short distance. A, slight cut on the head and a bruised leg were his only injuries. T-A April 4, 1940 Mr. J.A. Gregory, of North Battleford, an Exeter Old Boy, was last week elected to the Federal Government to represent "The Battlefords". Mr. Gregory for six years represented the Battlefords in the Saskatchewan legislature and last week redeemed the riding from the Social Creditors. Mr. Gregory has been a resident of Saskatchewan for 40 years and for 13 years was mayor of the city of North Battleford. CURLING TROPHY — The trophy above is so shiny that it looks brand new. In fact, this same trophy was won by one of Exeter's first men's 'curling teams around 1 9 1 1. On that team were Nelson Sheere, William Taman, George Anderson, and William Heaman. The trophy is now the property of Mrs. Frank Creech, daughter of Nelson Sheere. Snider who was absent. The inaugaural meeting will be held Monday next at 11 a.m. One of the first things to be considered will be a new table to seat the members now increased from 5 to 9.
