First blood clinic left
nothing to be desired
The following account of
Exeter's first Red Cross blood
clinic is taken from the Times-
Advocate of July 1, 1943:
The arrangements for the first
Canadian Red Cross Mobile
Blood Donors Clinic which was
held in Exeter Thursday morning
left nothing to be desired ac-
cording to Mrs, Pitt, Reg. Nurse
superintendent of the clinic.
The clinic was held in the
basement of the James St. United
Church. It was sponsored by the
local Red Cross unit of which
Mrs. Ida M. Sanders is the
president by the Exeter Lions
Club under the presidency of Dr.
Dunlop with the municipal
council taking care of the ex-
penses.
Out of 65 persons registered, 60
reported and of these 54 donated
blood. Many of the donors were
from the surrounding com-
munities.
There were eight improvised
beds with four doctors and 12
registered nurses in charge. The
doctors were Dr. Steer, of
Hens all; Flt. Lieut, Burke, of the
SFTS Centralia; Dr. J. G. Dunlop
and Dr. M. C. Fletcher of Exeter.
Mrs. W. E. Weekes, convener
of the registered nurses, was
assisted by the following: Nur-
sing Sister Campbell of No. 9
SFTS; Mrs. Harry Cole, Mrs.
Dunlop, Mrs. Fletcher, Mrs.
Grieves, Mrs. Lownds, Mrs.
Garnet McFalls, Mrs. W. D.
Sanders, Mrs. Lloyd Taylor, Mrs.
Winslow and Mrs. Gerald
Zwicker.
Mrs. Ida M. Sanders and Mr. H.
0. Southcott greeted the donors
at the door. Mrs. Vernon
Heywood was the recording
secretary assisted by Miss L. M.
Jeckell and Mrs. M. A. Hunt.
The donors were afterwards
served with tea or coffee, toast,
marmalade or jam. Mrs. E. J.
Green was convener of the
refreshments assisted by
representativbes of the various
churches and the Eastern Star
Order as follows: Mrs. Robert
Crawford, Mrs. Ed Irwin, Mrs.
McGregor, Mrs. Kyle, Miss L.
Huston, Mrs. K. Fuke, Mrs. Chas.
Mason, Mrs. John Ferguson,
Mrs. Cecil Stewart, Mrs. J. A.
Traquair and Mrs. R. Kestle.

the dedication service on Sep-
tember 27th, the same year.
Many firsts were experienced
in the new building, the first
wedding being in November and
the first baptismal service in
January 1969 followed by the
formation of the Christian Ser-
vice Brigade, a programme
designed for boys of ages eight to
eighteen years.
A similar programme, Pioneer
Girls, was inaugurated in
February 1970 for girls from the
third to the twelfth grade.
In July 1969 pastor Harold
Thynne accepted the call as
pastor of Emmanuel Baptist
Church, and assumed duties in
September, a fellowship supper
being held in his honour,
Early in January the next year
a childrens' crusade was held
with the children's evangelist
Frank Wellington. This started in
the church building on Sunday,
January 4 but due to the large
number in attendance, had to be
transferred to the South Huron
District High School auditorium
on Wednesday.
Over five hundred attended.
There were fifty-four counselled
with regard to making a decision
for the Lord Jesus Christ.
Highlights through the in-
tervening years have included
special services with the Camp-
bell-Reese Evangelistic team,
the Murdy Getty campaign, the
Dr. Estep Prophetic Crtisade,
and numerous guest speakers
and missionaries not to mention
many interesting and in-
formative films and slides.
The names of the donors were
