Readers write on dump, conservation
"This trip helped me to see just
what was being done by a Con-
servation Authority. After
talking about what has been done
and then, seeing it, it is much
clearer,This trip also brought the
class to-gether and we learned a
lot about each other. I know that
some of the kids who went just to
get out of school, returned with
more interest in the course."
"Mr. McCauley, this trip was
excellent in my view; I believe I
learned more on this outing than
on any other trip I have taken
with the school."
"As an Environmental Science
student I feel that all who went on
the field trip would benefit. There
was something for everyone. It
showed us how the public's
money is spent and I feel that all
of the public would be pleased
with their projects. One of the
things that fascinated me was the
fact that the areas the Authority
used were very clean. I was very
surprised at how good the park
That's what Alliston needs."
(end of quotes)
Well, Bill I think the above
"says it all", However there are
a couple of thoughts I would like
to leave with you and the people
of the Exeter area.
One never really appreciates
what he has at home until he
leaves and comes back to visit.
That's how I felt on Saturday
travelling around town and
seeing old friends and
acquaintances,
I heartily encourage all your
citizens to boost the Exeter
Centennial celebrations and for
heaven's sake get involved , be a
part of something that will be
remembered into the next cen-
tury. Then, when visitors drop in
and compliment your town on its
achievements, you can have the
satisfaction of saying to yourself,
"By, gosh, I had a hand in that."
Andy Dixon once gave me a
definition of a "conservationist",
which I think is still quite apt. He
said a "conservationist is a fellow
who plants a tree under the shade
of which he knows he will never
sit."
Such a philosophy is not quite
true now from a technical
standpoint with mechanical
tree-spades and such available,
but I believe the basic idea is still
valid whether applied to citizen
involvement with community
affairs or to conservation.
Happy Birthday, Exeter! You
may be 100 years old but you
wear well, and you're still pretty
enough to have some secret
admirers!

some residents are blaming me
for the closing of the dump. When
I Appeared at the OWRC hearing
in the early spring I did not object
to the site being used as a landfill
site.
I did object to the way it was
being operated. I objected to the
burning of rubber tires and
plastics from local industries. I
still object to the clouds of smoke
which hover over the area almost
every day. The smoke is un-
sightly, smelly and I wonder
about its effect on the health of
people and animals.
also wonder if all this waste of
materials is necessary, Each
time I buy a bicycle tire I wonder
if I am also paying for one that
has been thrown out at the dump.
I have also heard rumors that
some residents plan to dispose of
their garbage along the roadsides
if the dump is closed. I hope that
no one would be so thoughtless
and uncaring. However, I realize
that these people are unhappy
with the decision to close the
dump, I urge these people to go to
council with their grievances and
to discuss possible solutions to
the problem.
The council meetings, like the
OWRC hearings, are open to all
citizens. Stephen township
council meets the first and third
Tuesdays of each month at 7:30
p.m.
Yours truly
(Mrs.) Margaret McClure
Best personal regards

Dear Bill:
It was enjoyable seeing you last
Saturday when I was in town for
the, official opening of the
Ausable BayneId Authority of-
fice. It is certainly a far cry from
the back seat of Fred Jackson's
station wagon or the cramped
quarters in the house on the
south-east corner of Main and
Huron Streets.
Our short conversation
reminded me that I had intended
to share a few student reactions
with you, which came out of a
grade 11-12 Environmental
Science and Geography field
trip to the local watershed on
May 10 and 11.
During the school year, I have
been referring to the Ausable-
Bayfield area as a "case-study"
of how conservation "ab populo"
is done in Ontario. The two-day
field trip to Western Ontario was
the culmination of these
discussions and the following
typical quotations from their
reports on the excursion, show
how interested and impressed
they were:
"I found this trip very wor-
thwhile and I think it should be
intensified and studied yearly."
"Although the Ausable-
Bayfield watershed is out-of-the-
way, because it is the oldest and
because it is different from our
own (the Nottawasaga), it
arouses greater interest in the
students,"
"None of the people we talked
to talked above our heads. They
talked to us and they didn't treat
us as if we couldn't possibly
understand, The atmosphere was
one of friendly, hospitable people
who were as interested in us as
we were in them,"
"This area was really big and a
lot of work has been done. It's the
biggest project (of conservation)
I've ever seen, and the people in
the Ausable-Bayfield watershed
should be proud. I think more
work of this sort should be done."

Sir:
In last week's paper the write-
up of Stephen Council meeting
announced that the dump on lot 3,
concession 5 is to be closed.
The Ontario Water Resources
Commission has decided that
because of the high water table
the site is unsuitable for a landfill
operation. In fact, because of the
high water levels the township
has not been able to carry out
their proposed plan to cover
material each day.

village talk, I have learned that
