They are replacing Dr. Harvey
Cowen who is retiring after 50
years of dentistry, 38 of those in
Exeter, and Dr. Donald Gratton,
who will be leaving to take a two-
year course at the University of
Michigan.
Dr. Gratton will be working
until about the end of July in
Exeter, and will return after the
two years to practice at least one
day per week.
Dr. Jean and Dr. Lingard both
just graduated from the dental
school at the University of
Western Ontario. Dr. Jean said
that there is a tendency in den-
tistry to get into a group situation
and that he and Dr. Lingard had
been looking for a practice in a
more or less rural setting.
The work isn't any lighter but
it's a lot more "easy-going and
relaxing once you leave the of-
fice," said Dr, Jean.
Both are very pleased with
Exeter. "The people are friendly
and really terrific," said Dr.
Jean.
"We are very favorably im-
pressed with the town," said Dtt,
Lingard. He added that they
haven't found any of the disad-
vantages often associated with a
rural setting.
They have done fairly ex-
tensive renovations to their office
and have a new name for it, "The
Huron Dental Centre,"
They stressed that they are
"preventive oriented". "The idea
is to have your teeth, or most of
them, until you die," said Dr.
Lingard.
They hope to set up a "control
program" wherein the patient
controls his own disease and the
dentists just coach him.
Dr. Lingard is married and has
two small children, Stephen, 2
and Kimberly, 1. He is presently
living in London, but will be
moving to Grand Bend the end of
July.
Dr. Jean has already taken up
residence in Grand Bend and is
getting married in October.
