At the United Church 128 people
were served by the United
Church Women, by ticket only for
"Luncheon is Served."
The guest speaker was Roy
Harris a design engineer with
Bell Aerospace, Grand Bend. His
message was on hovercrafts, It is
based on a very simple principle.
The ancient Egyptians invented
wondrous ideas 3,000 years ago,
like the steam turbine of which
they made a toy. The Hovercraft
began in 1955, through the
ingenuity of Christopher
Cockrell, who found methods of
applying the idea of a balloon
emptying and filling.
Since then the Hovercraft in-
dustry here, using the air-cushion
principle for traction — not the
usual wheel — has built two
Hovercrafts, one based at Inuvik,
N.W.T. and one at Hay River,
N.W.T., being used for transport
now.
