JUNE 1973
HOW MANY PRESCRIPTIONS IN YOUR HOME?
If you are an average family, recent studies
have shown that the number of prescription
containers in your home will range from five
to eight.
WHERE DO PEOPLE KEEP THEIR MEDICINES?
In the great majority of homes, over 80%
of medicines are kept in more than a single
place. But, when a single storage place was
used the kitchen is almost twice as popular
as the bathroom medicine cabinet.
ARE LABELING AND STORAGE CORRECT?
Usually not. Unlabeled medication of one sort
or another can be found in most every home.
And in the majority of homes good storage
methods, to prevent product deterioration, are
not practiced.
HOW LONG ARE PRESCRIPTIONS KEPT?
Most of them are kept around for too long.
This is dangerous because many medicines can
lose their potency even when stored properly.
And, an old medicine when used for "similar"
symptoms of a past illness may in many cases
cause great harm.
WHAT SHOULD YOU DO?
The best advice we can give you is to exer-
cise good common sense. Keep all medicines
in a single safe place out of reach of children.
Immediately discard any medication if the
label is lost and/or you are not sure of proper
storage requirements. Don't use an old medi-
cine to treat yourself for a new illness with-
out first checking with your physician. Some-
times only a phone call will be necessary.
