-Lately there have been a let of
eontroVersy .about the .capital
punishment issue, It seems that
Most people hove negative views
towards the death penalty. They
believe that just because one
person may kill another that this
is not enough reason to pot to
death the wrong-doer,
These people do pot realize that
if the death penalty was brought
back, there would be fewer major
crimes, This is because of the
natural fear every person has of
dying.
Also the 13ible states'`Ari eye for
an eye and a tooth for a tooth"
meaning that severe and just
punishment must be dealt out.
As I see it, unless a feared
sentence like the death penalty is
brought back, criminals will
become and more carefree in
their ways of crime. The value
and importance of life will
decrease to a point where people
no longer care about murder and
death.
We must stop this degradation
of life now before our country
becomes as unsafe to livein as
our next door neighbor, the
United States.

Your "crack-down", "tough
line" and "hard-nosed" attitude
seem to suggest that anyone
under 23 is naturally going to
break the law by drinking,
fighting and taking drugs, This
outlook reminds one of something
out of the 1920's.
Take a look around at the way
you handle kids; see how many of
them respect the law in Exeter,
You sit up during all hours of the
night by the now-defunct Exeter
Coffee House to bust a couple of
kids,
You appear to be ready to jump
on every "suspect drug pusher"
and dope addict (which of course
means kids with long hair
because everyone knows that if
you have long hair, automatically
you're "strung out" on dope,
. Chief, what I'm saying is that
you're being prejudiced towards
kids and, as a result, are not
respected by people such as me.
Well, to get to the immediate

everyone here feels some sort of
accomplishment arid are proud to
be rewarded in any way by their
parents for what they have done.
As much as I really like some of
my teachers I am here for myself
and for the people in the future
who might be depending upon me
as a parent. I don't really care
what the teachers do.
I have one hope, one dream
that I want to be a reality some
day: that I never grow up to be
some self-centred deadbeat with
nowhere to go,
You went and used vague
generalities and said in effect
that parents don't really care
what happens to those who are
not quite adults yet, What a cold
and heartless assumption to
make about people whom you
don't even know!
Just to get a lift from seeing
your words in the students' paper
you jeopardize any relationship
between students and teachers
which exists, not to mention the
doubts you may have caused
people younger than I to have
about their parents.
Above all, my good man,
blame a crisis on some innocent
"third person victim."
When speaking of "NO ONE"
in our society being expected to
accomplish anything, your letter,
sir, accomplished just that. But if
you still aren't sure about it, ask
Mr, Wooden what your "teacher'
position is supposed to ac-
complish.
In order to pin your shoulders
to the mat, I have one last
argument to present. Many of the
same people who thrive on the
word 'society' would also like to
persuade us that the family unit
is dead.

As is the case with many of us,
we stroll merrily along life's way
with as much apathy as possible.
We dodge problems, soon lose
interest in those we do have, and
generally shrink from respon-
sibility,
Well, I am one person who has
come to see a problem and
decided not to turn away but to
examine it and propose possible
solutions, Please bear with me.
The problem is the Exeter
Town Police Force. Since the
boss generally gets blamed for a
faulty operation, I will refer to
the problem as Chief Day.
It has come to my immediate
attention that a grave disservice
is being dealt out to the young
persons who live in and visit
Exeter.
Chief Day, you are being
"outright" prejudiced in your
handling of the young populace of
Exeter. Your control, or at least
your attempt at control of the
kids around Exeter is out-dated,

First of all I would like it to be
known that I am not an appointed
spokesman for a group of
students joined together with a
common interest. However, I
can't help but imagine there are
others besides me who became
enraged at the senseless article
which appeared in last week's
Guardian, I am speaking of
course about that which was
entitled "Speaks on Credit
System", with implicated ap-
propriate subtitles as well.
If the writer of the article has
been frightened by the number of
people who agree with his
opinions perhaps I will be able to
reassure him that he has no fears
at all. Instead of picking his
arguments off down the line, one
could make his downfall more
disastrous by showing that the
foundation for his thesis is almost
non-existent,
In Grade 11 one of my English
classes was interrupted by an
inspector of some description. In
fact he took most of the 45
minutes explaining that high
school students in his days were
exactly like we are today.
If this is true it shows two or
three things: (1) I now know who
taught us how to be "lazy and
good for nothing" (2) you, Mr.
Long, are lazy and good for
nothing, or (3) someone's lying.
I'll leave that point and continue
with another.
The word "society" and its
various uses never fail to sicken
problem and look for a solution
and a mind which is unable to
differentiate concepts.
The word bunches together
almost anything imaginable and
its use is one of the best ways to

problem (example of the
problem) which has come to my
attention — it so happens that
S.H.D.H.S. had its annual spring
formal on the eve of Friday, May
4, 1973. As one might have
guessed (as Chief Day did I'm
sure), it was a major attraction
for "young people" (senior
students and past graduates),
mostly between 18 and 23 pr 24
years of age.
Sihce a party-like mood
existed, there was sure to be
booze among some of the par-
ticipants. This event could be
compared to a Lion's dance, a
Kinsmen's dance or a Legion
party except that the participants
would be over 25 years of age. To
those whom this group includes,
perhaps you recall slipping out to
the car for a nip during the dance,
maybe.
To continue, this formal dance
presented to the police a target
with the bull's-eye full of kids. So
later that evening, slowly driving
- around the parking lot at the high
school, with their lights off, those
"good of"' Exeter Police
proceeded to "bust" kids in their
cars with booze.
I would like to emphasize that
this is only one such example of
police policy in Exeter.
I'm not suggesting that kids be
exempted from the law. What I
want to draw your attention to is
the fact that had this dance been
an adult-orientated event, the
police would not have followed
such a practice. I am sure that
Chief Day would not make a
practice of patrolling a dance
held by the Legion or whatever,
knowing full well .at the same
time that there would be booze in
the cars present, and yes, adults
actually drinking in those cars
and therefore breaking the law.
What I am demanding is a "fair
shake" from the Exeter police
and that the citizens of Exeter
protest this apparent act of in-
tolerable discrimination against
their young people by their police
force.
I am not asking the police of
Exeter to "lay off' but rather that me. It indicates to me a mind
4 "the same pressure of the lavvbe4;Which- has no' desire to faCe'-a
applied to adults in the com-
munity as well. It's only fair.
I assure you, Chief Day, you'd
make a real "haul" by crashing
an adult event. For example, just
sit out on the steps at the station
and watch for impaired drivers
leaving the Legion. I'm sure a
man of your calibre could pick off
at least ten per week, maybe 15.
But of course this is unheard of.
I ask the mature adult reader
to please weigh what I have said
here and then to consult his
conscience. I think you will find
that I am right,. It's the young
that Chief Day seems to be after,
We can't turnaround. Can you?
Do you feel the pressure of being
suspect all the time? We do. And I
tell you, "we don't like it." Chief
Day, I assure you, we don't like
it. We know what you are doing.

A recent week was educational
week. It was for the parents to
come out and see what the kids
had learned at school and see
what their working condition
were.
Not very many parents showed
up though. Especially on Tuesday
night when the debate was on.
There were only 35 parents and
school kids out. There seemed to
be more high school kids than
parents. Why?
Are the parents not interested
in how we learn? Are they just too
tired to give a hoot or do they
think that the kids nowadays can
look after themselves?
What do you think?

The job of this year's student
council is almost over and next
year's about to begin. I would like
to say that our VOICE this year
has spoken out loud and clear!!
A ending ovation is in order
for this group of kids who have
given us a year of good dances, a
fabulous Winter Carnival
(Edward Bear especially) and a
beautiful formal along with the
help (money and otherwise) they
have given our extra-curricular
student groups.
They have done a lot for the
student body. If you agree (and
you should]) don't keep it inside.
Before the term is over tell a
student council member what a
good job he/she has done, Let
them know that their hard work
has not gone unnoticed!
