GOOD SPORTS By Ross Haugh Expos meet Dashwood in Huron Perth opener The Huron-Perth baseball league will open. the 1973 schedule in Dashwood Friday May 25 with the Exeter Expos supplying the opposition for a game ander the lights. Exeter fans will have their first opportunity to see the Expos in action at home the following Sunday afternoon at two o'clock when Walkerton will be in town. Contrary to reports a week earlier, the Huron-Perth will consist of only six teams. In addition to Exeter and Dashwood they are Clinton, Arva, Thorndale and Walker- ton. The Walkerton entry will be of the intermediate varie- ty. A junior entry from the same town did not materialize. On one occasion, the Walkerton club plays a Sunday doubleheader at home. On Sunday, July 8 Dashwood will be in Walkerton for a 1.30 contest and the Exeter Expos follow for a four o'clock game. The ball season locally actually opened last night Wednesday when the Exeter and Crediton midgets met in an exhibition contest. The first game of the season for the Exeter Centennial soccer club ended in a 3-3 tie Sunday at the South Huron District High School playing field. Huron Park took a 2-1 lead at half-time but the young Exeter club came back to score two goals in the last half while the visitors could score only once to create the tie game. Tony Hemmings scored all three Exeter goals, one coming on a penalty shot. The Exeter club will be in Strathroy Sunday at 4 p,m. to meet Strathroy in an Ausable senior league game. Anyone wishing to assist the Exeter club in any way is asked to contact Centennial club president Dave Zyluk at 235-0328. Congratulations are in order We would like to send our congratulations along to Kim Postill and all the girls who were members of the South Huron District High School cheerleading team at Monday's Huron-Perth conference track and field meet held in Lon- don. Kim was named junior girls individual champion and the local group of cheer leaders won the title in the division for spurring their athletes by way of cheers and acrobatics. Kim Postill now goes on to compete in WOSSA playoffs but we don't believe there are any further competitions for the cheer leaders. Rockets capture most si▪ lverware A tight race The first month of play in the Eastern division of the eri can b as eb alljeague. has produced a real b attle fox...the. t is a real battle, because of Monday Morning only' pwo : games separated the six teams in the grouping. To slow how close the race is, the Detroit Tigers were in a first place tie Saturday morning and after the weekend find themselves in fifth place, a game and a half out of first. The chances for the Tigers in winning the pennant this yeari., look real good. They are off to a flying start and the older hitters who don't usually hit their stride until the warmer weather comes along are swatting the ball at a good clip. Fellows like Al Kaline, Norm Cash and Willie Horton are hitting the ball at a mid-seasort clip which is the main reason the Tigers are just. off the pace. In the National league it's good to see the Chicago Cubs out in first place. We hope this is the year for the Cubs to win the league championship. Chatham's Fergie Jenkins, a 20-game winner for six consecutive years deserves a berth in the World Series. This is a record which few major league pitchers can ever hope to attain. Fergie won his third game of the season on Sunday as the Cubs swept a doubleheader. The Chatham native is always a slow starter so he should up his 20-game win streak to seven years. The other three divisions in the major leagues fail to have such a battle between all clubs. In the American's western section, eight games separates the first and last clubs while in the National league the difference from top to bottom is eleven games in each division. A' A large percentage of the silverware handed out at Saturday's season ending banquet of the Exeter men's bowling league was won by the Rockets. The Rockets won the "A" league regular season cham- pionship, carried on to take the "A" playoff crown thanks to Bill Farquhar's perfect 450 game and Wednesday downed the "B" champion Woodworkers for the league's grand championship. Massey Ferguson won the "B" league regular season title and the A & H Superiors were named playoff consolation winners. Getting awards for perfect attendance throughout the year were Hank Brand, Clay Murray, Bob Reynolds, Ron Dickey, Brian Sanders, Larry Hockey, Gerry Campbell, Tony Mattucci, Joe Darling, Rod Hippern, Al Neal and Lyle Little. .,WOODWORKERS TA`KE "B' CHAMPIONSHIP — The playoff chartOronship of the Exeter men's bowling .„.,`,!.13" division was taken *by the Woodworkers.
