Land use discussed A discussion on land-use planning and farming brought a wide number of suggestions at the monthly meeting of the Huron County Federation of Agriculture held Thursday night in Clinton. The members present broke into four groups to discuss the problem and each group came up with different answers. One group suggested agricultural people should be able to retire on agricultural land and recom- mended the licencing of farmers. Another group said Huron County land should be used to best advantage and claimed the present Huron county plan doesn't make provision for this. The group thought that if a small portion of a farm was separated from the rest of the farm by a natural boundary such as a river so that it was difficult to work it practice for farmers which says a as part of the farm, the farmer farm building cannot be built should be allowed to sell it for use within 1000 feet of an urban area for building lots. L should' apply in reverse so that Another group said there urban-homes cannot be located within-"1000 feet of a farm operation. Farmers were penalized by zoning, one member said. They could be in a position where they couldn't make money on the farm and yet couldn't sell the farm to developers. Milk group back to Huron Federation The Huron County Milk Committee has decided to rejoin the Huron County Federation of Agriculture after an absence of several years. The decision of the committee, announced at the regular meeting of the HFA Thursday night in Clinton by Martin Baan of Walton brings to eight the number of organizations who have affiliated with the HFA for 1973. The others are the Seaforth Farmers' Co-Operative; the Huron County Development Committee; the 4H Club Leaders Association; the Ontario Egg Producers' Marketing Board; the Huron County Beef Improvement Association; the Huron County Soil and Crop Improvement Association and the Huron Holstein Club. Mr. Baan, commenting on the milk scene at present also noted that although the increase in the price of industrial milk has been announced as a 60 cent hike, in many cases it will not, because the floor price exceeded the old price. In most cases, he said, the increase would be more in the line of 40 cents. for cleaner, more economical, trouble-free miles M PA, the (multi-purpose additive) works for you in three ways: as a Detergent, it cleans dirty car- buretors and keeps them clean for better mileage, less maintenance, De-icer, its coating action keeps ice particles from plugging up your carburetor and stalling your engine, Anti-corrosion Agent, it forms a protective coating that guards against rust build-up on the interior walls of tanks, fuel lines, pumps, carburetor bowls and even storage tanks. In addition they have built a 90 by 21 foot temporary shelter. For the next few week's the Rammeloo's will be featuring boxed plants. They now have plants to fill more than 20,000 boxes being transplanted and ready for sale. The gardening venture for Rammeloo started in 1968 when he planted a peach orchard. They now have 600 peach trees and visitors are allowed to pick their own fruit in the fall. Added on a fairly large scale are strawberries, sweet corn and tomatoes. The Shipka area gardener emphasizes that everything sold from his farm is homegrown. He added. "We sell only what we grow, This way we control quality." Boxed plants now being readied for sale include tomatoes, cabbage, peppers, broccoli, head lettuce, cauliflower, petunias, geraniums, alyssum, foliage, impatiens and marigolds. The green house is constructed of double layers of polyethelene with air being pumped between the layers to create and in- sulation barrier. Rammeloo estimates a saving of up to 40 percent in heat by using polyethelene as compared to glass. A fan unit keeps air moving continously through an air tunnel to prevent any accumulation of stale air. Temperatures are maintained at 70 to 80 degrees for ger- mination and dropped to below 60 for transplants. All soil used in growing the boxed plants is purchased and is completely free of diseases and weeds. Basic components of the soil are peat moss, vermiculite and dolomitic limestone. The soil is sterilized only if it is used a second time. Rammeloo says this soil allows for an ex- cellent root system of plants because of the lack of opposition of weeds. The temporary shelter built only this week will be used to raise tomatoes and cucumbers through the fall and winter months. Farmer Bill expects to have vine-ripened tomatoes and cucumbers available up to at. In a ion to fruits and vegetables, the Rammeloo's have eggs and dressed chickens for sale at all times along with geese and ducks in the fall.
