The newly installed executive was in charge of the evening. New exemplar members, Marie Beaver, Louise Giffin, Carol Arthur, and Joyce Dobson gave the entertainment as part of their initiation. Further plans fora float in the centennial parade and the tour of homes were discussed. Girls were selected to assist at the PlayhouseGuildBazaar tobe held June 3. Fancies dime store and wander around looking at all the treasures until we found one that was just right. I'll never forget one, memorable occasion, on which we did just that. We found what we thought was an ashtray, a pretty little glass dish in the shape of a star with a special place, right in the centre to butt cigarettes or cigars. I had never seen one just like it and thought it was a brilliant idea because only that centre section of the ash-tray would get really black. Imagine our consternation when we proudly watched Mom open it and then heard her say, "Did you only get me one?" Boy, I thought, what does she expect from us. But it turned out that what we thought was an ingenious idea for an ashtray was actually a candle holder, and the handy little place in the centre was wliere you set the candle. I'm sure there were other occasions, just as bad, but thank- fully they have been forgotten with time. By the time Mom reads this, her birthday and Mother's Day, 1973, will be past history. But I hope that she, and all mothers realize that there is no way of measuring the feelings which are designated to be expressed only on appropriate days such as Mother's Day. Mrs. James MacDougald, president opened the meeting and asked for a moment's silence in memory of the late Mrs. Fred Switzer who was an active director for many years and had also served as president. Jean Copeland led in a sing- song accompanied on the piano by Mrs. Philip Johns. Mrs. Clarence Schrader in- troduced the guest speaker, Gerald Brinkman of Wartburg who showed pictures taken oh, a trip to the Canary Islands and around Ontario including his own gardens where he grows thousands of flowers.
