dime store and wander around
looking at all the treasures until
we found one that was just right.
I'll never forget one,
memorable occasion, on which
we did just that. We found what
we thought was an ashtray, a
pretty little glass dish in the
shape of a star with a special
place, right in the centre to butt
cigarettes or cigars. I had never
seen one just like it and thought it
was a brilliant idea because only
that centre section of the ash-tray
would get really black.
Imagine our consternation
when we proudly watched Mom
open it and then heard her say,
"Did you only get me one?"
Boy, I thought, what does she
expect from us. But it turned out
that what we thought was an
ingenious idea for an ashtray was
actually a candle holder, and the
handy little place in the centre
was wliere you set the candle.
I'm sure there were other
occasions, just as bad, but thank-
fully they have been forgotten
with time.
By the time Mom reads this,
her birthday and Mother's Day,
1973, will be past history. But I
hope that she, and all mothers
realize that there is no way of
measuring the feelings which are
designated to be expressed only
on appropriate days such as
Mother's Day.
