By MRS. ROBERT LAING
Another landmark of this area
has disappeared with the
demolition of the corner store in
Cromarty, The store, which in its
day served as wagon and car-
penter shop, general store, and
post office, was recently pur-
chased by the county of Perth,
then sold to Ted Harburn with
both the store and dwelling to be
removed,
The main building was 40 by 24
feet, with 16-foot posts on timber
frame sitting on a 20-inch stone
masonry foundation. It was
covered first with one-inch
lumber and later asphalt siding
was put on,
The store was opened by Joe
Hoggarth in 1879, following the
burning of the previous wagon
shop in 1878. George Miller was
the next owner and by the late
1880's had it equipped for both a
store and a home.
It was rented to Adam Case for
a short time, then in turn to
James Hyslop, Fred Coleman,
and a Mr. Zimmerman from
Zurich. Mr. Miller then took it
over himself.
The next owner, James Brown,
was the last to operate the store
for many years, and while he was
there he had the kitchen moved
from the west end of the building
to the north side in 1906.
In 1907, Mr. Brown sold to Ira
Andrew who owned the store

across the street and by 1908
Dave McConnell owned both,
Using the Miller store as. a
warehouse. The dwelling at that
time was rented to a Harry
Golding. In the late teens and
early twenties it was often rented
by the community and used as a
dance hall,
In 1918 it was bought by a group
of farmers and was operated as a
co-operative for farmers' sup-
plies with John McCulloch in
charge, then Dick Quance. Mrs/
Quance later rented it from the
Farmers' Club and opened a
general store.
James M, Scott rented the store
in 1943 and from 1946 to 1954 it
was run by Ross Houghton.
Mrs, Lloyd Sorsdahl was the
last storekeeper, and ran it ,until
they moved to Mitchell in 1961.
The building was rented to Laurie
McKellar for several months in
1963, then sold to Les Desjardine,
from whom the county purchased
it.
Cromarty Post office moved
several times but was in George
Miller's store from 1901 till 1907;
then it was moved to Archie
Robertson's home until 1928 when
it again returned to the store,
remaining there until it moved
during Sorsdahl's occupancy to
Walker's store across the street.
The building has deteriorated
greatly in the last few years and
its removal will not only improve
