about opposing candidates. After
all, this is, a lady's sport.
When all is said and done, the
big moment finally comes at the

stands in hushed anticipation as
the contestants, who have been

announcement oQ the new queen.
The magic words are uttered.

Mr. & Mrs. Gerald Hern'hosted

in Whalen Community Centre.
The winners were: mens high,

Robbie Haas; ladies high, Lulu
,Neil; ladies low, Shirley
'Hodgson. Following the euchre
Mr. & Mrs. Bill Damen Jr;
ilderton were presented with

Blom, Granton left Sunday for
the west coast on a three-week
holiday.
Mr. & Mrs. Harry Carroll and
Mr. & Mrs. Heber Davis, Saint-
sbury were Saturday visitors
The masses have spoken, but
what of the after-effects? The
winner's only problem is, of
course, suppressing an inflated
ego into humility. Certainly there
is overall relief, but for the
"losers" (who form the
majority), there can only be
hidden feelings of depression,
failure, jealousy, rejection and
sadness, Yet such feelings should
not ideally be warranted because
the aim of the whole business has
supposedly, or at least should
have been honour for all the
worthy contestants, But because
the process has been distorted and
turned into an entertaining and
belittling piece of sensationalism,
the contestants have been vic-
tims of a corrupted "system."
I do not wish to be a senseless
destroyer of school spirit and
tradition (as I am sure some
people will label me after reading
this article) but on the contrary,
a concerned member of this
school. I am not just criticizing
the principle of "queenism" for
the sake of exercising my pen,
but rather because I feel it is a
vital and serious issue of ethics
(if you will permit me to use the
word) with which we should be
concerned.
For these reasons, I urge you
all to examine, as best you can,
the campaign, Look at the people
involved, the campaign methods
used by the candidates, and the
methods of selection that have
been employed this week. Then,
decide for yourself whether or not
you, with your limited knowledge
of the contestants, can accept the
grave responsibility and prin-
ciple of selecting a "queen", the
"greatest" among us. Whether or
not you personally face the
serious nature of this choice is
your responsibility alone, but the
the moment your pen touches
that ballot you are giving your
approval and committing
yourself, consciously or "un-
consciously," to the idea of
"queenism."
If you find objection, one of the
most effective methods of
showing your disapproval would
be to boycott the elections, But
don't waste your vote. Write your
reason for disapproval on the
ballot and cast your opinion.
Make your voice count. Make
sure that the people at the top get
the message.
I speak also to you candidates.
If you find this custom personally
degrading as a woman and as a
person, withdraw from the
"race." Does it matter if the
school acknowledges or doesn't
acknowledge your "con-
tributi.ons?" Isn't the most im-
portant thing that you yourself
know what you have done for
S.H.D.H.S. has been freely-given
and unselfish? If this is true, you
already have an inner feeling of
genuine and personal ac-
complishment and self-worth.
What more really means
anything? Why be put on display
like a prize dog (a heroine-
martyr) to amuse people in an
"exciting" exhibition and con-
test. We could have a formal
without going through the cut-
throat process of selecting a
"queen."
Everyone has something of
"worth" to give the world. It is
his/her duty to share this gift
(great or small) with society.
Don't sacrifice yourself into
being pointed out as the
"special" person, You will soon
feel like an "icky" freak if you
do. You will be changed (at least
in the eyes of others) and not for
the better. Don't let yourself be
caught up in this madness. You
will wonder afterwards why you
did it. Be honest with yourself as
a person.
In closing I would simply like to
say that I hope this year's queen
campaign has not proven itself to
be distorted as can easily become
the case. If you have found such
to be true or you object to the
principle of "queenism" let your
feelings be known tomorrow
morning. The responsibility is
yours.
