About 50 ladies gathered at a
meeting of the Exeter Christian
Women's Club at the Bayview
Tourist Inn last week to hear
Rev. Jim Somerville, Director of
Special Projects for Compassion
of Canada, a special children's
relief fund with Canadian
headquarters in Blenheim.
Rev, Somerville, a former
Chatham minister, joined the
organization about one and a half
years ago,
The organization itself,
however, came into being in 1952,
during the Korean War.
Reverend Everett Swanson, a
Chicago evangelist, ministered to
the Republic of Korea troops and
at the same time noted the plight
of thousands of street urchins and
"beggar boys" scavenging
garbage cans for discarded food.
Upon his return to the States,
he organized the Everett
Swanson Evangelistic
Association and devoted his full
time and talents to the new
venture. Shortly thereafter, the
ministry was renamed Com-
passion, Inc.
Compassion is primarily a
ministry to children. Provision is
made for their spiritual,
physical, and material needs.
Care includes food, clothing,
shelter, medical assistance, and
elementary education.
In addition to these "basics,"
Compassion's ministry is
spiritual. A primary goal is to
proclaim the Christian gospel to
each child.
It also supports hundreds of
native evangelists, Bible
teachers, and pastors, all of thern
lending assistance to field kaffs
and superintendents of children's
homes.
Bible study materials have
been especially translated for use
in the homes by Bible teachers,
evangelists and home superin-
tendents.
Compassion assists in the
obtaining of secondary and
higher education for qualified
youth. Vocational training,
rehabilitation and extended

medical care for handicapped

are part of the ministry.
The general office of the
organization is in Chicago,
Illinois. The Canadian
headquarters is at Blenheim,
Ontario, and field offices are
located in Seoul, Korea;
Djakarta, Indonesia; Singapore,
and India.
Rev. Somerville stressed the
"tremendous number" of
children who are eared for by
Compassion. They have just
taken on 1,200 more from India
and with only 1,000 sponsors in
Canada, this means that they are
taking on more than double their
present Canadian sponsorship,
The work of Compassion is
supported by sponsors and
contributors, This is a personal
way for individuals, families and
groups to help in a tangible way.
It costs only $12 monthly to
support one child.
Rev. Somerville's family care
for two children, one in Haiti and
one in Indonesia, "Our greatest
need is for people willing to
demonstrate their Christian love
in caring for a child," he said.
He told of one family which
eats porridge three times a day,
for just one day out of the month,
and in this way, they save enough
to support their child. In another
case, grandparents provide the
money for the support of two
children,but their grandchildren
do all the corresponding with
their foreign friends.
Compassion deals with all sorts
of children: orphans, the men-
tally retarded, blind, deaf and
crippled children, tuberculosis
patients, children whose parents
have leprosy - there are attempts
made to help all of them,
They work with more than
23,000 needy children in 11
countries, but the majority of
work centres in the far east and
the Caribbean, This month, the
president of the organization,

Mrs. Elizabeth O'Brien,

If you know of anyone

to appear, please tell us.
There is no charge for this
service,

terested to become a sponsor.
"The scope of our work if far-
reaching and is expanding all the
time," said Rev. Somerville,
"but we need a lot more help."
Rev, Henry Harvey, a veteran
missionary-statesman, and a
team of workers plan to visit
Vietnam. They estimate there
are between 300,000 and 500,000
children to be cared for in that
country alone,
Compassion does not work
alone, however. It works with
four other organizations: The
Christian Children's Fund, World
Vision, The Canadian Save the
Children's Fund and Foster
Parent's Flan, co-ordinating
activities, and trying to avoid
conflicting work and overlap.
Rev, Somerville stressed that
there are still thousands, of
children crying out for help, care
