Homemaking gives independence ..1!
hospital having a new. baby and a
homemaker was requested by the
Children's Aid Society to look
After the young children so the
husband could continue working.
The homemaker discovered on
Arriving, that this family did not
have enough bedding to provide a
set for each bed, and. also lacked
towels and other household
necessities. She advised the
homemaking agency of this
problem,
Mrs. MacKinnon said, that
over the years she has developed
a supply of essential household
supplies by encouraging
donations frornilifferent sources,
so that when A situation like this
turns up, some supplementary
help can be given.
When .the homemaker was
through helping this family,
letter was received from these
parents, thanking them for their
help and saying how. grateful they
were, knowing someone "cared".
In Hamilton, homemakers are
involved in providing
homemaking to senior citizens,
either by the citizens paying
themselves or through Social
Service assistance. Sometimes it
is the homemaker who discovers
when illness or death has Oc-
curred.
Mrs. MacKinnon stated,
"Independence, is one of the most
precious needs in everyone's
life", and homemaking is one of
the methods in maintaining this
independence.

Beta Sigm a Phi crowns
top 'girls of the year'
The two chapters of Beta
Sigma Phi Sorority celebrated
their Founders Day Banquet at
the Green Forest Lodge, Grand
Bend last week,
Special tribute was paid to the
25th anniversary of its founding
in Exeter.
The formation of this new
group was largely the idea of
Irene (Beaupre) Irving now of
Simcoe. She became the first
president.
Irene attended the celebration
along with Margaret McFarlane
also a charter member.
Special honor was payed to
Elsie Tuckey when a 25 year pin
was presented to her by Donna
Jones on behalf of the chapter.
The "Girl of the Year" award
given to the girl chosen by each
chapter for outstanding service.
Louise Giffin was the choice of
Alpha Pi chapter and was
crowned by Ada Dinney. Mary
Jane Taylor was Girl of the Year
for Zi Gamma Nu and crowned
by Mrs. Earl Campbell.
Joyce Dobson, Marie Beaver
and Louise Giffin were given
Exempler Degrees to Zi Gamma
Nu Chapter.
Receiving the Ritual of Jewels
Degree were Sharon O'Toole, Jay
Skillender, Evelyn Josephson,
Mrs. Earl Campbell and Beth
Jamieson.

A meeting of the Certified
Visiting Homemakers of Huron
County, was held recently at
Conestoga College, with 20
homemakers present.
The guest speaker of the
evening was Mrs, Madeleine
MacKinnon, executive director of
the Visiting Homemakers
Association in Hamilton.
Mrs. MacKinnon, a native of
Clinton, discussed the role of a
visiting homemaker in to-day's
society. She told the homemakers.
that to-day, with most families.
functioning as isolated units,
there is more need for someone to
help take over the homemaking
role in an emergency.
The Visiting Homemakers
Association in Hamilton has
developed from a small nucleus
of women, interested in helping
others in time of need, to over 150
women who offer emotional
