EXEtER CENTENNIAL SOCCER CLUB Poo* 6 Times-Advocate, April 19, 1973 aplimmoomiumowainionnumntimiliwomissollissfitisiloottountoisomiummufillinlin FOR ALL GOOD SPORTS By Ross Haugh Hail the champs For the second time in as many years, an Ontario hockey championship will rest in Exeter. This time it's the Ontario Minor Hockey Association Pee Wee "B" trophy. The Exeter Legion Auxiliary pee wees won the air-Ontario title in Huntsville Sunday afternoon with an excellent, performance. They won the game by a decisive 9-3 score to sweep the best-of-five final in three straight game. We would like to pass on our sincere congratulations to manager Bev Skinner, coach Lloyd Moore and every member of the team for their accomplishments. Especially in the final series against Huntsville, the youngsters showed what can be accomplished with a solid team effort and persistent checking. The Exeter club was full value for the win Sunday as they kept the opposition team bottled up continually with good forechecking. The big local advantage in the final was the fact coach Lloyd Moore could throw out a well balanced team on all shifts while the Huntsville power was confined to one forward line. The Exeter club has the unique situation of having two sets of twins on the club and all four boys were mainstays in the offensive and defensive units of the team. Paul Pooley was one of the club's top scorers while the other three, his twin brother Perry and Darrell and Dennis Preszcator formed the nucleus of the team's strong defence. One Huntsville supporter told us Sunday, this was rather unfair. He laughingly said most families are lucky to get one good hockey player in any one age group but the Pooley's and Preszcator's made it tough for the opposition with duplications. The record of the pee wee club during the playoffs, has been terrific. In five playoff series, they won 14 games while losing only two. They held a distinct advantage in the scor- ing department, notching a total of 109 goals while allowing only 38 to the opposition. We saw two of the three games in the final series with Huntsville and it was a real pleasure to watch the youngsters in action. The sportsmanship displayed by both clubs was almost unbelievable. The entire series was completely free of fights or in- cidents of any kind. Both teams stuck right to the job at hand, that of trying to win each and every hockey game. The Huntsville coaches and some of the players visited the Exeter dressing room afterSunday's game to offer their congratulations. At the same time we pay tribute to Bev Skinner and Lloyd Moore for the excellent way in which they handled the Exeter club and set a good example of sportsmanship we would like to extend the same congratulations to Ron Mason of the Huntsville club. While the boys played a tremendous brand of hockey, the support they received from the fans was also instrumen- tal in bringing home the championship. In a situation like this in a pee wee category, one could expect the parents to be the most interested. This was cer- tainly true in the Exeter situation but the support from other area hockey fans, especially in the final series with Huntsville was wonderful. In addition to the parents who accompanied the team for the Saturday and Sunday games, another seven or eight carloads of fans made the 230 mile trip Sunday morning to cheer their favorites on to the championship. In paying tribute to everyone concerned with the team we can't forget the sponsors of the club, the Exeter Legion Auxiliary. The ladies of the Auxiliary were on hand at the Legion hall Sunday night to provide lunch for the team and their supporters. Congratulations again, everybody. From down under Monday morning we spent a few enjoyable minutes chatting with a visitor from Australia. When we say a visitor the term is probably used rather loosely. He was Elmer Ince who spent most of his younger days in and around Exeter. Elmer grew up in town, went to school here and participated in most sports. We remember Elmer as being a baseball pitcher in the minor ranks. He told us baseball is played on a small scale in Australia. This was probably started from the influence of American service men during the Second World War. Hockey is also played to a degree. Elmer emphasized the Australians call it ice hockey to differentiate from field hockey. There are now two ice rinks of the smaller variety as opposed to our arenas. They are located in Melbourne and Sydney. Two of the major sports in Australia are lawn bowling and soccer. Elmer told us there are several varieties of soccer played. One brand is called "Australian Rules". In this game the scores can reach the proportion of professional basket ball in the United States. Elmer said a score of 122-118 is not uncommon. Two sets of goal posts are used for determining scores in this game. If a ball is kicked through the high goal posts it's good for six points. A kick through lower goal posts counts a single point and is called "a behind". These soccer games in Australia draw crowds of over one hundred thousand, Elmer well remembers the mania which catches on here during Stanley Cup and World Series time. He said we have nothing on the Australians. They go wild during football playoff times. Elmer Ince is now a Flight Lieutenant in the Australian Air Force. Adding single scores were George Tryon, Phil Conlin and Bob McIntosh. George Tryon with two goals was best for Brinsley Thursday night. In Tuesday's Shipka win,Reid Burley was the top goal producer with three while Bob Chapdelaine scored a pair of goals and singles were added by Bob Lovie and Brian Hodgins. The Brinsley scoring was taken care of by George Tryon and Phil Conlin. Lieury won the Ausable Valley Rec hockey league championship Thursday night with a convincing 13-6 win over Ailsa Craig. Lieury won the final series three games to one. In the consolation final, Brinsley blanked Shipka 7-0 Sunday night in the seventh and deciding game of the series. Tuesday night, Shipka went ahead in the series with a 7-2 win but Brinsley squared things Thursday night with a 5-3 decision. Stan Harwood was the leading scoring for Lieury with a four goal effort. Checking in with two goals apiece were Gerald Nor- demann, Wayne Ropp and Paul Glavin. Single goals were shot for the winners by Sonny Slater, Ernie Schlegel and Bob Robinson. Scoring in single fashion for Ailsa Craig were Gwen Griffiths, Charlie Eedy, Dave Collins, Larry Heaman, Don McAlpine and Tom Dobbinson. Pull away in third Sunday's final game was ex- tremely close for the first two periods but theExeter youngsters were able to pull away in the third period. With a 4-3 lead after 40 minutes of play, the locals scored five times in the third period without a reply from the Huntsville op- position. The fourth Exeter goal which actually proved to be the winner came at the 14.30 mark of the middle frame, Only five seconds after a Huntsville penalty had expired, Paul Pooley flipped in a high shot from the right side of An excellent effort by the entire team has given Exeter's its first all-Ontario minor hockey championship. The Exeter Legion Auxiliary pee wees brought the Ontario Minor Hockey Association Pee Wee "B" title to Exeter Sunday night. Under the direction of manager Bev Skinner and coach Lloyd Moore, the pee wees culminated an excellent season in Huntsville Sunday afternoon by downing the home team by a score of 9-3 to sweep the best-of-five final in three straight games. Saturday, the locals took a two game lead in the series with a close 6-5 victory, They won the first game at home a week earlier by a score of 6-4, On the way to the cham- pionship, the pee wees won all but one of 15 games down the playoff trail. Their only loss was to Delhi in overtime. After Sunday's final game win, Exeter captain Brad Taylor received the OMHA cham- pionship trophy from OMHA convener Laverne Reynolds of Huntsville. During the trophy presen- tation, Reynolds said he was proud of the two young teams in the way they showed good sportsmanship in the final round. He also paid tribute to the large contingent of Exeter fans in attendance at Sunday's game. Several of the Huntsville team including coach Ron Mason and one of their top performers Randy Ellis visited the Exeter dressing room after the game to offer their congratulations.
