Meet Huntsville for championship First game here Sunday
Pee wees reach Ontario final FOR ALL GQOD $PQRTS
By Ross Haugh
In the
finals
For the second consecutive season, hockey fans in Ex-
eter and district have the opportunity to watch top notch
playoff action as a local team performs in an all-Ontario
championship.
The high flying Exeter Legion Auxiliary pee wees
wasted little time in disposing of Petrolia in semi-final play
and now go against Huntsville for the Ontario title,
The pee wees thumped Petrolia 9-2 Thursday to take that
series in three straight games.
The first game in the finals against Huntsville will be
played at the Exeter arena Sunday afternoon at two o'clock,
The second and third games will go back in Huntsville the
following Saturday and Sunday.
The fourth game, if necessary will be played in Exeter
on Saturday, March 21 and if a fifth game is necessary it will
be played the following day, Sunday in the rink of the team
which wins the toss of the coin.
The Exeter club has had little trouble in reaching the
finals and should give a good account of themselves against
Huntsville. We would like to wish Bev Skinner and Lloyd
Moore and the youngsters the best of luck and hope an On-
tario championship trophy will rest at the Exeter arena for
the next 12 months.
A former hawk
This week we received a press release from St.
Lawrence University in Canton, New York regarding the
performance this year of a former member of the Exeter
Hawks junior club.
We will quote the release in full. "St. Lawrence Univer-
sity freshman Joe O'Rourke, son of Mrs. Clare O'Rourke of
Dashwood, Ontario was a defenceman on the school's
freshman hockey team.
"O'Rouke, a good skater with a tough shot, was one of
the "Little Larries" assistant captains. In 15 games, he
scored five points on two goals and three assists.
"The St. Lawrence freshmen team, coached by Bill
Wilkenson, had a 10-4-1 record for the season. Among the 10
victories were two impressive wins over Canton A.T.C., the
National Community College champions.
A successful operation
The first year of operation of the new Ilderton arena
seems to have been a very successful one if the amount of
hockey teams in Ontario finals is any indication.
Two Ilderton minor clubs are participating in provincial
finals and the Lucan-Ilderton Jets are waiting for either the
Stratford Perths or the Durham Huskies to do battle for the
all-Ontario Senior "B" championship.
At the time of writing this column Stratford and
Durham are all tied up at two games apiece in the league
semi-final round.
The Ilderton pee wees are tied with Marmora at a game
apiece for the Ontario pee wee "D" championship. The
third and fourth games go in Marmora this coming weekend
with the fifth contest back in Ilderton Saturday, April 14 at 1
p.m.
The bantams from Ilderton start this weekend in
Colborne in an attempt to bring home the bantam "D" title...
The two teams swing back to the Ilderton arena for games
the following Saturday and Sunday.
Plenty of trades
Swapping of players in the National Hockey league this
year has kept most fans a little confused as to who was play-
ing for which club.
During the time from the opening of the season to the
cut-off date of March 5, no less than 34 NHL performers
changed sweaters.
The trades were not confined to any age group or any
pattern for reasoning. The trades ranged from 31 year-old
Pierre Plante going from Philadelphia to St. Louis and the
veteran goalie Jacques Plante moving from Toronto to
Boston.
Theitrading,of Mike Murphy of the St. Louis Blues in ex-
change for Ab Demarco of the Rangers marked the 13th
time players have changed uniforms between the two clubs,
The two clubs have dealt a total of 29 players to one
another and four of them, Murphy. Rod Seiling, Andre Du-
pont and Peter McDuff e have been involved in Blues-
Ranger deals twice.
In explaining this, Ranger boss Emile Francis says,
"the fact that we've continued to make so many trades with
each other is a prettygood indication that each side feels it
can get a fair deal with the other."
Sportsman's show
This year's Sportsman's Show being held this week at
the Progress Building at Western Fair Grounds in London
promises to be bigger and better than ever.
Officials say there is a lot for everyone. In addition to
the hundreds of boats, campers and recreational equipment
that will be shown there will be a full lineup of entertain-
ment every day.
The show which opened Wednesday will be open from 11
a.m. to 11 p.m. each day this week until Sunday when it will
be open from 1.30 to 9.30 p.m.
You can see who is fastest gun in the West at the Quick-
Draw shoot-out. You're pitted against another fast-draw ar-
tist, guns strapped on, and your draws against each other
electronically timed!
Having trouble with your golf swing? Drive a ball into
the net, then watch as your shot is played back on video
tape. Two Canadian Professional Golf Association pros,
with the help of the TV camera, will show you where you
differ from Arnold Palmer.
Those hockey activists in your family can try their skill
at Avco's shooting gallery. Scoring with one shot wins them
a free puck; two scores wins a stick and three scores a puck
and stick. London Knights players will be on hand to provide
hints and tips to those budding NHL-ers. Everyone gets a
consolation poster of NHL facts.
If you are looking for something a little less strenuous,
slip over to the indoor pool and watch the fashion show
featuring loads of bikinis! It happens weekdays at 7 and 8
p.m., Saturday at 2, 3, 7 and 8 p.m. and Sunday at 2 and 3
p.m.
For the kids, Ronald McDonald, the well-known clown
from the hamburger chain, will be on hand Friday evening
at 7:30 and Saturday at 1:30 p.m. and 4:30 p.m.
The Ferguson-Wilson auto racing team will be display-
ing their latest exotic machinery for the racing buffs,
The thrill of catching your first fish is available at the
live trout pond at the show, The kids can go fishing in an 18
by 35-foot pool with an excellent chance of success,
Each day at the Sportsman's Show someone becomes a
winner. Thursday is Teens Day, featuring a rock 'n' roll
band providing live music and Miss Teen receiving a host of
prizes.
