T-A photo, Come from behind Midgets win consolation title Olden articles at WI meeting The Lucan Women's Institute held their regular monthly meeting at the home of Mrs. Bill Tupling March 21. President Mrs. Snelgrove opened the meeting. Julie Henderson farm show princess gave a summary of her experience and was presented with a gift. Mrs. Crozier reported on board of director's meeting announcing the district annual at Granton, May 15. Oldest small articles were brought and an explanation given for roll call. The motto, "Memory is a wonderful treasure chest if you know how to use it." was read by Mrs. Crozier. The Tweedsmuir History committee presented the program. Mrs. E. Hodgson spoke on her family tree and Mrs, F. Hardy gave an informative talk on the business year on Main St. in 1908, Second stars for district Explorers Three second star ceremonies took place at Lucan-Clandeboye explorers Monday evening. Mrs. Wm. Fronts presented second gold star to Dorothy Cunningham and :Maria Richards. These girls told what they liked in their three years of Explorers. Mrs. Don O'Neil presented the second red star to four girls, Lori Leitch, Joanne Carter, Heather Fenwick and Barbara Richards. Chief Explorer Dorothy Cunningham presented the second blue star to Wendy Hearn and Bonnie Richards. Mrs. O'Neil compared education in India with Canada The "Live, Love" project is to help I)r. Anna Loane. Wearing a doctor's smock, Wendy Hearn represented Dr. Loane and told about her life and work in India. The group is going to attempt to raise $50 for the project. Joanne Carter and Bonnie Richards led the worship \N ail the theme of "School Days". The next expedition will held April 2. Learning for Lent Visitor attends Sunshine club to wrap up the game. Pat Holland, the third member of the Smith - Culbert line picked up two assists as that line ac- counted for 7 scoring points. Honorable mention has to go to Dave Crane who played a standout defensive game and Randy Kraul for his penalty killing efforts and offensive hustle, k a s it Mrs. Harry Bond Sr. presided at a recent meeting of the Lucan senior citizens Sunshine Club. A total of 94 members, and one guest from Chatham attended the meeting. Mrs Frank Hardy Sr. con- ducted a reading as did Mrs. Frank Joilife. Then 15 games of bingo were played. The third "Learning for Lent" session was held yesterday in Lucan United Church. Mrs. E. Stanley conducted the continuing sewing with knits class and Mrs, C.H. George took the participants on an arm chair vacation to the Maritime provinces. The fourth, and second last class will be held April 4 at the regular hour, 9:30. In addition to the sewing with knits class, Mrs, David Kestle will demonstrate the making of beeswax candles, Mr. Tupling will also continue with his talk on the church's evangelical program, "Key 73", Mr. Corbett reports maple sap Novas running on Saturday and Sundt*. and he now has hopes of tilling present orders. Janice Moore visited her grandparents Mr. & Mrs. Sinclair during the holidays. Mr & Mrs. Charlie Corbett had a lot of visitors to the camp on Sunday. N. Fizinga who used to live on main st. in Lucan has entered University Hospital for an Operation. Mrs. Mary Hodgson had Mrs. William Rock, of Parkhill and children David and Jamie; Miss Ryektnan; Helen Carscallen, Toronto: Mrs, Lela Beadle Stratford and Mrs. Mary Squire, Lucan on Saturday. On Sunday Mr. & Mrs. Allan Robinson and twins of New Hamburg visited. Mr. & Mrs, Gord Wilson and Lori visited Mr. & Mrs. Jack 'annon of Ingersoll. Mr. & Mrs. Cliff Abbott have returned from a few days in Marton where they were guests of Mr. & Mrs. Allan Tindall. Mrs. Bob Bilyea was a Saturday visitor of Miss Abbott at the McCormick home, Miss Abbott is having difficulty recovering from the flu. Mr. & Mrs. Stan Flood Sr., Ingersoll, and Mr. & Mrs. Ross McKenzie, Woodstock took Mr. & Mrs. Stan Flood Sr. to the Barn restaurant on the occasion of their anniversary, Also present was Mr. & Mrs. Bruce Flood, Burford, Mr. & Mrs. Bill Eden, John and Bill Wallacehurg, were guests with Mr. & Mrs. Thos. Emery Sr. Jeff Culbert led the attack with two goals and two assists. Cap- tain Dave Smith followed with two goals and an assist. Other goals went to Brian Noyes, Gerald Spruyt, Brad Taylor and Marty Wraith. Thursday Lucan faced Wiarton for the "C" Consolation final and came home with a 6-4 victory and the Lockridge Memorial trophy, After 50 minutes of play it ap- peared Wiarton had the game won as they held a 4-2 lead and had standout goaltending. Marty Wraith in the first period and Dave Smith in the second were the only ones to capitalize on their scoring opportunities. Midway through the third period Jeff Culbert started the come back that changed the tide of the game by firing two quick goals to even up the score and set the stage for the winner. Hand hitting Bob Cornish picked up a loose puck in his own end and raced the full length of the ice, With one Wiarton defenceman draped over him, Cornish neatly slid a back hand shot into the net. Less than a minute later Smith scored again Over the spring break, the Lucan Midget hockey team travelled to Wingham to par- ticipate in the Wingham midget tournament and came home with the "C" Consolation trophy. In the first game on Tuesday, Watford came up with a 7-6 win. The closeness of the score was not necessarily indicitive of the play as Watford controlled much of the game. Only the supurh goaltending of Lucan's Kevin Lightfoot kept the game close, Scoring for Lucan were Vince Dunleavy with two goals while Gerald Spruyt, Scott Anderson, Jeff Culbert, and Pat "Jock" Holland each scored singles. It was a different story on Wednesday as Lucan trounced the Durham midget Huskies 8-2 t Are you listening "Jets". After two periods of tight hockey, Lucan broke the game wide open with 6 unanswered goals in ,the third. HEBER DAVIS SAINTSBURY Mrs. Hazel Eaton was hostess Tuesday evening for the March A,C,W. meeting. The president, Mrs. Hugh Davis was in charge. Mrs. Savary read the scripture and prayers followed. Mrs. Heber Davis gave a financial report on the last banquet. Plans were made for refresh- ments to be served at a April farm sale, They also planned a progressive euchre for April 3rd. There was a fine turnout of dart players from as far away as Kitchener. Guests were present front Exeter, Lucan, Ailsa Craig, London and Kirkton, Julie Henderson, 19-year-old daughter of Mr, & Mrs. D.J. Henderson, Lucan, and grade 13 student of Medway High School, was crowned Farm Show Princess for 1973. A total of 21 contestants vied for the crown recently at the Paddock building, Western fair grounds. Each girl was sponsored by either a Junior Farmers Club or Women's Institute organization. At the start of the contest the girls were interviewed and judged at the Administration Building. This years judges were: Angela Armitt, Summer School and Extension Branch of the University of Western Ontario; Meg Daniels, Vogue Model agency; and John Wiley, Georgetown, Superintendent of the Agriculture Department, Royal Winter Fair, Mrs. George Butler judged the essays sub- mitted by each girl about their sponsoring organization. Present for the buffet supper were Mr. & Mrs. Harry Knipp, RR 2, Lucan. Mr, Knipp is the president of the Middlesex Soil and Crop Improvement Association, On the opening night of the Western Fair Farm Show. the contestants and members of their sponsoring organizations gathered on the second floor of the Paddock huilding, for the crowning of the 1973 princess. Each girl received a gift, of two bracelets, Angela Armitt named the princess and the three top Conte dens in order of rank: Julie Henderson, sponsored by the Lucan Women's Institute; Dorothy Jean Kitchen, RR 4 Woodstock, sponsored by the Oxford Junior Farmers; Anne Toni, RR 2 Strathroy, by Mt. Brydges Women's Institute and Nancy Holland, RR 2 Denfield sponsored by the Clandeboye Womens' Institute. Susan Clements, RR 3, Ingersoll, completed her final duty as 1972 Western Fair Farm Show . princess by crowning the new Princess. In honor of the occasion the new princess received a dozen red roses and an eight piece place setting of silverware. Julie's reign began by being present at the fashion show on Wednesday accompanied by Carol Hardy and Julie Beadle of Lucan. The Members of Branch 540 wish to congratulate them on their win and extend a vote of thanks to the adults that took the time to transport these youngsters to Wingham that they might take part in the tournament.
