To maintain the fact, which is
crucial to our position as
Christians, but to leave it open to
differing interpretations, is
honest and Christian, but it
probably will give heresy hunters
a great opportunity.
The "Mission" of the Church
follows naturally from the
"Faith"•of the Church, and so
that section of 9 articles comes
next. 'This section outlines the
task of the Church in the world. It
too takes very careful reading.
The full implications have to be
dug out. The section is weak in
presenting the idea of
"proclamation of the Good News
of Christ", It is strong on the
prophetic and serving aspects of
the mission of the Church, but not
strong enough on "proclaiming"

Jesus as Saviour.
There should be an article
defining what the "Good News"
is. Article 25 seems to imply that
the prime duty of the Canadian
Church is to be a "lady bountiful"
of great empathy, but when one
reads the whole section it
becomes clear that this is not
what is meant-. The article should
be re-drafted.
• The addition of the world "all"
in article 28 is one example of a
slight change that would make a
great difference — "He has
chosen ( the Church) as the
bearer of his good news of
forgiveness and new life, and as
the agency through which he
calls ALL men and women to
repentance and commitment to
Jesus Christ,"
Mrs. Ward Hern, Mrs. John
Coward and Mrs. Jackson Woods.
The two other 25-year members,
Mrs. Judson Dykeman and Miss
Ruth Skinner, were not able to
attend.
Although the membership has
dropped from the 64 ladies in that
first year, 1348-49, to the present
38 members, the WI has con-
tinued to be very active, both
within the group and in the
community.
They sponsor euchre parties
throughout the winter months,
sponsor three 4-H homemaking
clubs with a total of about 35
members in Elimville and do
some catering.
Rather than giving gifts to the
25-year members, the WI decided
to use the money to buy material
for new drapes for the Elimville
community hall. The ladies made
the drapes themselves for the
hall, where they hold their
regular monthly meetings.
The group itself is very active
as well. In the course of the last
year, they have taken classes in
sewing and macrame, both
taught by institute members. And
in order to try to get ahead of the
times, the members are studying
the metric system. In this way,
they hope to be prepared when
Canada formally adopts the
metric system.
In addition, Elimville WI
contributes to many worth-while
causes in the district, including
the Rehabilitation Adult
Workshop for the mentally
retarded in Dashwood; War
Memorial Children's Hospital;
the CNIB; and the Exeter Fair
Board. They also donate both
money and clothing to the
Children's .Aid Society; support
South Huron Hospital through tag
day; attend Huronview Auxiliary
meetings and help with the
bazaar and birthday parties at
Huronview.
"We have a very active in-
stitute," said this year's
president, Mrs. Elson Lynn.
"Everyone is always more than
willing to jump in and help."

Perhaps the most important
section of the "Plan of Union" is
the one entitled "Faith". This
consists Of 13 'articles of ' very
close theological writing. This
section is so tightly written that it
has to be read over carefully
several times before all its im-
plications are seen. In a few
cases this is not satisfactory.
Certain articles should be revised
or expanded in order to make the
meaning crystal clear.
For example, it is the Christian
faith that Jesus the Christ is the
only Saviour of the world. To
outsiders this is part of the
"scandal" of the Christian faith,
but it is a conviction that cannot
be avoided when one reads the
New Testament. Yet this fact of
our faith is played down in the
"Plan" so that one has to read
both the sections on "Faith" and
"mission" very carefully to see
that it is implied. In the article on
the Person of Christ, the addition
of the words "only Saviour of the
world" would make this fact
clear.
Another article of faith in the
Anglican Church at least that
does not appear clearly in the
"Plan" is "the Second Coming of
Christ", This has been un-
derstood by Christians in dif-
ferent ways, and that is fine.
There should be no attempt to
define its terms too closely, yet to
omit it completely does not seem
the right way to deal with it. A
short phrase in any one of several
of the articles in the "Faith"
section would take care of this.
This section includes articles
stating the Church's acceptance
of Baptism, the Lord's Supper,
and the Ministry. These subjects
will be dealt with when they come
up later.
This section also contains two
other articles of which we should
take note. Article 21 states that
the faith of the Church is based
upon the Holy Scriptures, "which
we recognize and accept as the
prophetic and apostolic witness
to God's self-revelation and his
mighty acts. Through the Bible
the Church hears God's living
word and receives it as the
supreme rule of faith through
which its life, teaching and
worship are to be tested and
renewed,"
Article 22 states that the
Church "gratefully receives from
the ancient church" the Apostles'
and Nicene creeds and Other
primitive statements of faith, and
accepts them "as rehearsing the
mighty acts of God recorded in
the Holy Scriptures, as wit-
nessing to the faith of the fathers,
and as providing a bond of union
With Christians of all ages
throughout the world". This is the
attitude toward these ancient
statements which IS already held
by most members of the uniting
churches. The creeds are used
not as enforced tests of or-
thodoxy, but as proclamations of
joyous faith.
It is noticeable that there is in
the plan no attempt to closely
define dogma in terms of
classical doctrine. For example,
how the atonement takes place is
not defined, but the fact of the
atonement is stated. "Jesus
Christ, the Sro of God and the
True Man, gives us access to the
Father in faith, fellowship With
one another In love, and freedom
to live in the world with hope,"
