SECOND DRAW WINNERS - The second draw of the Exeter men's
curling club has been completed and the rink headed by Peter Ray-
mond was declared champions. Back, left, Jon Dinney and skip Peter
Raymond. Front, Cal Wein and Jack Kraft, T-A photo.
The game was a rough, hard-
hitting affair from start to finish,
Petrolia ran into three straight
penalties early in the first period
but they sort of backfired as far
as the Exeter cause was con-
cerned.
While the Exeter club was
trying to get its power play going,
the visitors scored three times
with one of their players resting
in the penalty box.
The only Exeter goal of the first
period was fired by Paul Pooley
on a pass from Danny Bell. John
Dawson, Todd I3idner and Doug
Eves were the Petrolia
marksmen,
At 6.18 of the second period,
Randy Parsons took a pass from
Brad Taylor and blinked the red
light behind the Petrolia net.
Only moments later Doug Eves
was back to get his second goal of
the night to put Petrolia in front 4-

Perry Pooley took over in the
scoring department for Exeter
with two goals in the last seven
minutes of the middle period. His
first came on a shot from the left
side which was deflected in front
of the net and the second was a
hard slap shot, also from the left

throughout the series.
Early in the third period, Jim
Avery notched his second goal of
the night and the Mitchell club
seemed to have a very safe 5-2
lead.
When it appeared the game
was in the bag for Mitchell, Rick
McDonald was called for tripping
and the Exeter power play went
into effect.

A team effort
Saturday's Exeter win in
Petrolia was accomplished with a
solid team effort as six different
players shared in the scoring.
The first goal of the game for
Exeter came from the stick of
Paul Pooley with the assist going
to Darrell Preszcator. Firing the
second marker for the winners
was Perry Pooley on a play again
set up by Preszcator,
Steve Skinner started the
successful play which resulted in
the third Exeter goal chalked up
by Ron Bilcke. Danny Bell scored
for Exeter on an unassisted effort
before the end of the second
period to give his club a 4-1
margin at the end of forty
minutes of play.
In the third period, the two final
Exeter goals again came on solo
efforts. Randy Fisher hit the net
with a blazing slap shot from
near centre ice and Darrell
Preszcator hit the mark on a lone
attempt.
The 1972-73 hockey season for
the Exeter Hawks ended Friday
night at the Exeter arena as they
were eliminated from further
play by the Mitchell Hawks.
The Mitchell club held on for a
5-4 win to take the best-of-seven
series four games to two with one
tie contest. Wednesday night, the
Hawks from Mitchell recorded a
6-5 win in overtime, also at the
Exeter arena.
Mitchell now moves on into
Ontario Hockey Association
Junior "D" playdowns and will
meet Hagersville in the first
round of provincial play.
While on the short end of the
score in the last two games of the
series, the Exeter Hawks lived up
to their reputation of being able
to come from behind.
Wednesday night, they scored
the only goal of the third period to
force the game into overtime and
Friday night they came on with a
rush in the last six minutes of
play to come within one goal of
tying the score.
The Hawks carried the play to
Mitchell in the final moments,
Friday and only outstanding
work by Ron White in the Mit-
chell nets presented the win for
his club.
White was, outstanding
throughout the game as he came
up with fantastic.stops on at least
three clean-cut Exeter
breakaways. Late in the third
period, he stopped everything the
locals threw at him.
At the other end of the rink it
was the same story with John
Hayter turning in heroic efforts
to keep the Mitchell club from
adding to their goal total.
The Exeter Waxers competed
in two mite hockey tournaments
during the spring break, but
failed in their attempt to bring
home a trophy.
Playing in the Dorchester
tourney in Belmont, Saturday,
the local lads posted wins over
Dorchester and Stoneybrook, but
were shut-out 4-0 by St. Marys in
the championship final.
The Waxers had an easy time
in their opener with Dorchester,
posting a 7-0 victory. Scott
Pincombe paced the attack with
three goals, while singles were
picked up by Bill Glover, Dave
Shaw, Dave Underwood and Scott
Batten.
Rick Mattucci posted his
second shut-out in the next game
against Stoneybrook as the
Exeter crew won 2-0.
Captain Bill Glover scored both
goals.
Playing in Listowel, Thursday,
the Waxers suffered identical 4-2
defeats at the bands of Delhi and
the host team to knock them out
of the "B" class.
Dave Shaw and Bill Glover
scored in the loss to Delhi, while
Scott Pincombe and Shaw picked
up one each in the loss to
Listowel.

beginning of the game, Thursday,
the Exeter youngsters came on

goals in the third period to win

While this doesn't completely fall into the sports
category we would like to publicize an important campaign
which is starting this week.
All householders in the area should have received their
supply of Easter Seals by the time this issue hits the street,
All proceeds from the sale of the Seals are used to aid
crippled children.
We were privileged to attend the National campaign
kick-off banquet in London Wednesday night thanks to the
generosity of the Exeter Lions club and their Easter Seal
chairman Don Taylor.
Attending the banquet were more than 350 represen-
tatives of service clubs who are handling the campaign in
their respective areas. The event was organized by the Lon-
don Rotary club.
Handling the campaign kick-off duties was Prime
Minister Pierre Trudeau. When first introduced the PM said
he didn't know if he was the right person for this job and
referred to his Grey Cup kicking and the last election cam-
paign.
Two of the most enthusiastic persons at the banquet
were a pair of young fellows who represent all the crippled
children in Canada and Ontario. They were Danny Musgrove
of Saskatoon and Ricky Ware of Scarborough.
While the crowd was waiting for the 'Trudeaus to arrive
from their tour of London's Crippled Children Treatment
Centre we had a brief moment to chat with the Timmys.
Despite their handicaps one would never find a more cheer-
ful, happy pair of boys.
Both play hockey in regular leagues and participate in
lacrosse, swimming and baseball. Ricky Ware recorded two
shut-outs as a goal tender in a Toronto area pee wee league.
Danny who was featured on a CBC television show recently
is also a goal tender.
Anyone connected with the Easter Seals campaign can't
help but become enthusiastic after seeing fellows like Dan-
ny and Ricky, The Ontario Timmy told us he was looking
forward to going smelt fishing this spring.
Whipper Billy Watson, the best friend of crippled kids
anywhere in Canada also spoke in London. Watson appeared
in a slightly different role than usual. In previous years, the
famous wrestler would carry the Timmys in on his
shoulders, but now he walks himself with the help of a cane.
Watson who was seriously injured in a car accident in
1971 said he had to use the advice he has been giving to
children for years, "to fight back".
He told the audience, Ontario has the finest arrangement
for crippled children anywhere in the world. There are 14,-
500 crippled kids in the province and 15 treatment centres.
If there are any youngsters in the area who fall into the
crippled children category in any way, the Exeter Lions
club would like to know about them. Contact may be made
with Don Taylor or Harold Gunn,
We would like to ask our readers to buy and use Easter
Seals. It's a small and easy way to help the less fortunate.
In addition to Easter Seals, this area is well known for
its contributions to crippled children activities. Only last
week, officials of the Pineridge Chalet delivered a cheque in
excess of $3,000 to CFPL's Bill Brady for use at London's
Treatment Centre. The cheque represented the proceeds
from the recent crippled Children's weekend.
Only ane left
The number of local hockey teams in the running for a
provincial championship has dwindled to one. The only boys.
still going are the Exeter Legion Auxiliary pee wees. They
currently hold a two game lead oyer Petrolia and seem to be
a certainty to make the Ontario finals against either
Huntsville or Sharon.
The Exeter Hawks faded from the playoff picture Fri-
day night but they did so in their usual manner of never giv-
ing up until the final whistle. Down three goals with less
than six minutes to go, they scored twice and came mighty
close to tying the score.
Congratulations go to manager Bob Baynham and coach
Bob White in bringing a good young hockey club a long way,
At the same time, the best of luck to the Mitchell Hawks as
they progress toward the Ontario championship.
Walt notched the winner at 3.31 in
extra play.

Good Start
In Friday's final game of the
series, the Exeter boys started
off in top flight and appeared to
be well on the way to victory with
two goals in the first seven
minutes of play. However, before
the period was over, Mitchell
scored three times to go ahead
and they never relinquished the
lead again.
Left winger Brian Bestard, the
only local. Hawk performer to
notch two goals put his club on
the scoreboardwith an,unassisted
goal at 1.40 of the first period.
Less than five minutes later the
score was 2-0 for Exeter as Brian
Taylor up from the Exeter
midgets converted a pass from
Brian Campbell, who was the
Hawks top point getter for the
night with three assists.
Mitchell hit the net for the first
time at 13.57 on a successful shot
by Charlie Smith. Before the
period was over, Don Nicholson
and Jim Avery also counted for
Mitchell and the score was 3-2.
The only goal of the second'

Walt does it again.
In the sixth game, Wednesday
night, Bill Walt proved to be the
spoiler for the Exeter Hawks as
the Mitchell youngster scored the
important goals for the second
time in only 24 hours,

in the first period and notched the
winner in overtime, Tuesday
night, it was the same Walt who
tied the score with only one
second left in regulation time and
hit again in overtime to give his
club a tie.

first period. Perry Stover and
Jelin Mommersteeg were the
Exeter marksmen while Phil

A well earned award
Don Urbshott, manager of the Lucan-Ilderton Jets
hockey club received a well deserved award prior to the
start of Friday night's playoff game against the Bothwell
Barons.
The members of the club got together and planned a
Don Urbshott Appreciation Night and they were able to keep
it a secret from their manager until only a few minutes
before game time.
A large banner was strung across the south end of the
Ilderton arena announcing the fact and Urbshott didn't see it
until he wondered why some of the players were talking in
little groups and looking at the end of the rink.
The players presented their manager with a beautiful
oil painting of himself and his wife Elvie with a dozen roses.
Urbshott, known through his playing days as the "Red Fox"
and in recent years dubbed as "the silver fox" has been the
driving force behind the Jets since their inception about five
years ago.
Before the formation of the Jets, he was a valued
member of many Ilderton and Lucan area hockey clubs.
We would like to add our personal congratulations to
Don. The co-operation we have received from him over the
years in getting reports of the activities of his club has been
excellent.
He spends endless hours each week in attending to
business of the club and we're sure a more diligent club of-
ficial cannot be found in hockey anywhere.
Another iron man
A National hockey league record is close to being
broken and it isn't one involving a player.

mark.
