gee wees in Ontario semi-final FOR ALL GOOD SPORTS
By Ross Haugh
More
hockey
It appears as if hockey fans in this area will be in for
plenty of exciting action despite the fact spring was sup-
posed to have arrived, Tuesday,
The weekend weather certainly didn't look like spring
but in its attempt to act like a March lion didn't stop some
of the enthusiastic young hockey teams from getting to and
from their scheduled games.
The Exeter Legion Auxiliary pee wees had a long, rough
trip back from Niagara-on-the-Lake in the early hours of
Sunday morning but their trip was made a little easier to
bear by the fact they won the hockey game and advanced to
the OMHA semi-final round.
The local bantam club sponsored by the Exeter Legion
were forced to wait a day to play their scheduled game with
Beamsville also because of the weather.
The game was set for Saturday evening but only one
Beamsville player was able to arrive in time. The balance of
the team blew in late Sunday morning and the game was
quickly arranged,
The Exeter club failed to win but they completed an ex-
cellent season by eliminating three teams along the playoff
trail,
To Corporal Ray Brooks of the Exeter OPP detachment
who is the coach of the bantams and his manager Bob
Osgood we would like to say a very sincere
"congratulations" on an excellent season.
The club did not win any championships but Brooks and
Osgood who was also a corporal during his air force days
moulded together a group of boys who always put out an ex-
cellent team effort.
In addition to their playing abilities, the bantams
became known as a fine bunch of young gentleman as they
travelled to other towns.
Getting back to the teams still in playoff battles, the pee
wees seem to be heading in the right direction for a good
shot at the Ontario championship.
Again in this category Bev Skinner and Lloyd Moore
have been doing a good job in bringing the youngsters along.
We were very impressed with the team's showing in their
home ice win a week and a half ago in the first game win
over Niagara-on-the-Lake. Keep going, fellows.
At the same time, the Exeter Hawks are back in the
thick of the fight for the OHA Junior "D" title. After losing
the first two games of the group final to Mitchell, the Hawks
bounced back with two impressive wins and are certainly
contenders for a repeat shot at the Ontario championship.
Also, we would like to send congratulations to Carl Nickles
and his Lucan Legion bantams in winning a tournament at
Barrie over the weekend.
Following Father
The number of players in the National hockey league
who are following in their fathers' footsteps is becoming
larger as each season begins.
At the moment a total of 10 sons of former NHL'ers are
playing in Clarence Campbell's professional loop but more
than this -amount appear to be on the way up.
Probably the most significant if not the most outstan-
ding player in the second generation of National Hockey
league crops is Jimmy Peters, presently with the Los
Angeles Kings.
In his first game in the NHL with the Detroit Red Wings
Peters was at centre ice between Gordie Howe and Ted
Lindsay. The oddity of this is the fact his father Jim Peters
Sr. played some centre ice between Howe and Lindsay with
the Wings.
Bryan Hextall of the old New York Rangers has two
sons in the big leagues at the moment. Bryan Jr. is with the
Pittsburg Penguins and Dennis is a member of the
Minnesota North Stars,
Craig Patrick of the California Seals is forward like his
dad Lynn was but plays right wing as opposed to his father's
spot on the left side. Another Lynn Patrick son is on the way
up. He is Glenn with Salt Lake City.
This actually makes three generations of the Patrick
family in the NHL. Before someone tries to remind us that
Lester Patrick was the Ranger coach, he did play in one
playoff game when his regular goal tender was injured.
If our memory serves us correctly Lester took over
from the ailing Lorne Chabot and played shut-out hockey
while he was in the nets.
Of the four second generation defencemen, three have
followed in the same positions played by their fathers.
Pierre Bouchard of the Montreal Canadiens is the strapping
son of Butch Bouchard who played robustly with the
Canadiens in the 40's and 50's.
Tracy Pratt, the Buffalo Sabres defenceman is one of
the still relatively few United States born players in the
NHL. Tracy was born in New York during the time his
father Walter -Babe" Pratt was with the Rangers. The
senior Pratt is now in the front office of the Vancouver
Canucks.
The other present NHL rearguard taking after his
father is Terry Clancy of the Toronto Maple Leafs. The son
of the famed King Clancy, Terry also plays some forward
for the Leafs.
The fourth defenceman is Ab Demarco Jr. who was
traded recently by the Rangers to the St. Louis Blues.
The last two of the ten second generations are Syl Apps
Jr. and Gary Smith, Apps, with the Pittsburg Penguins is
blossoming into a top notch centre, the same position his
father played for the Toronto Maple Leafs for many years.
Gary Smith, the tall Chicago Black Hawk goalie is the
son of former defenceman Des Smith who played with the
Montreal Maroons and Boston Bruins.
Of the more than a dozen sons of former NHL stars,
several are completing their education before thinking of
pro hockey as a career.
Included in this list are Alex Shibicky Jr., Bill Reay Jr.
and Rick Francis. All three are currently attending
American universities.
Other prospects in the minor hockey leagues who go by
well known names are Gardner, Schmidt, Howe, Lindsay,
Olmstead, Wharram. Bentley, Fogolin and Mosdell.
Talking about education, Syl Apps Sr, recounted recent-
ly how he insisted on good grades for his son before he let
him play hockey.
Said the senior Apps. "He was to maintain an average of
75 per cent in his grades and then he was free to play. Ac-
tually he fell to 70 per cent or so, but that was all right,"
The -famous father" monicker can Sometimes work in
reverse. It's said one of Maurice Richard's sons got so fed
up listetiing to people say, "well, he's no Rocket", that he
quit hockey entirely.
The Exeter Legion bantams
failed to survive the fourth round
of Ontario Minor Hockey
association playdowns as they
dropped two straight games to
Beamsville.
On Exeter ice Sunday
Beamsville scored a close 6-5
victory after winning by a single
goal at home a week earlier.
Sunday's game was originally
scheduled for Saturday but was
postponed when the Beamsville
bus was unable to get through the
stormy weather. Only one
Beamsville player, Kevin Smith
was in Exeter in time for the
Saturday game. He travelled by
car with his parents.
The eighth annual Knights of
Columbus hockey tournament

came away with a 5-1 victory to
win the quarter-final series in two
straight games,
A week earlier on Exeter ice,
they recorded a decisive 8-0 win.
While the game was a rough
affair, the weather was rougher
as the bus carrying the Exeter
contingent didn't make it home
until after 2 a.m. Sunday.
The Exeter win was finalized
with four unanswered goals in the
last four minutes and a few
seconds of play in the third
period.
The first period was scoreless
with the Niagara club taking six
of nine penalties called. Near the
end of the period Perry Pooley
and Brad Taylor of Exeter and
two Niagara players were sent
off for roughing on the same play.
The home team was first to
score as Larry Downs let go a
slap shot from the blueline which
eluded Exeter goalie Jim Veri
who was screened on the play at
8,45.
Only four minutes later, the
score was tied. Randy Parsons
stole the puck at centre ice, beat
the Niagara defence and skated
in alone to register an unassisted
goal.
The rough play continued in the
second period with Niagara
taking two of three penalties, The
Exeter club showed a lot of power
but was held ott ny an excellent
