During the past year, 1972, 198
patients were provided with
home care in Huron county. The
objective of home care is the care
of the patient at home rather than
hospital care, either by early
discharge or in place of hospital
care.
Home care is provided to
selected patients, as not everyone
can be adequately cared for at
home, The patient must be
referred by their family and must
need either nursing care or
physiotherapy, and their medical
condition must appear to have a
possibility of improving to a
position of independence,
When a patient is accepted for
home care, the following services
may be provided; nursing care,
physiotherapy, homemaking,
drugs and dressings, X-ray and
laboratory services. These
services are arranged according
to the individual requirements of
the patient. The cost of the ser-
vice is paid by 0.H.I.P., the same
as if the patient is in hospital.
Home care may be provided as
long as the patient shows im-
provement, The only restriction
is on the homemaking service,
which is limited to 80 hours per
patient.
Of the 198 patients who
received home care, 167 patients
received nursing care, 52 patients
received physiotherapy, and 107
patients received homemaking.
The patients ranged in age
from 10 years to 95 years and 53
patients lived alone,
Home care at present is limited
to giving active treatment with
rehabilitation to selected
patients, and does not answer the
needs of the patient requiring
continuing care, such as nursing
or homemaking.
