The first activity to celebrate
Exeter's Centennial year
featured no less than two bir-
thday parties at the Exeter
arena, Saturday.
Exeter Figure Skating club's
annual carnival was staged in
two sessions for the first time
with a Saturday afternoon
matinee in addition to the usual
evening performance.
The two-part show attended by
more than 1,100 persons was
entitled, "A Centennial Salute On
Blades To Boot" and presented
preparations for a birthday party
in the first half and a history of
Exeter in the finale,
The shows opened with an
official welcome by Exeter's
Centennial committee chairman
Derry Boyle treating the spec-
tators to an old-time skate. Boyle
was dressed in Centennial
Costume and was carrying a
cardboard clock in an attempt to
turn back time.
Later in the program, Father
Time portrayed by Steve
Loosley, a brother of club pro
Brad Loosley wobbled onto the
ice with a sickle over his shoulder
and was chased by young Mr.
1973 in the person of Jeff Pfaff.
Jeff was able to catch Father
Time on several occasions and
swat him with a baseball bat.
Several comedy acts were
worked into the program and
they were enhanced by club
president Jack Underwood and
Fred Elder. The two men com-
bined the first time out in a
bovine act billed as Luv-a-bull.
The second trip onto the ice
they were dressed in a horse
costume and near the end of the
act Underwood travelling in the
back portion of the animal
became disengaged and went
sailing behind the curtains.
One of the first acts on the ice
included seven baker boys
complete with large spoons ready
to stir up a big birthday party.
Next came the youngest group
of girls dressed as a variety of
vegetables followed by cupcakes
and strawberries.
Other presentations of the first
half included gingerbread boys
and magic mushrooms before the
big birthday celebration, A total
of 18 pretty young ladies
decorated the birthday cake with
firework sparklers and another
group came along with colorful
balloons.
• The second half of the show
'depicted history of Exeter

settlers, horses and wagons,

club and Jeff Loosley of Wood-
stock.
