Crediton man named chairman,

Rev. Douglas Warren of
Crediton took over the chair-
manship of the Huron-Perth
Presbytery of the United Church
at a meeting of the Presbytery in
Seaforth Thursday. He succeeds
Rev, Frederick Foist, Stratford
who resigned because of themany
meetings he must attend as
president-elect of the London
Conference of the United Church,
The office of the vice-chairman
left vacant by Mr, Warren's
election will be filled at the April
meeting,
Rev, Frederick Foist, in
handing over his gavel of office to
Mr. Warren, said that as
chairman he was often in a bind
to know whether the Presbytery
should be structured to program
or business, He suggested that at
the Presbytery there should be
more emphasis on program.
Business could be handled at
other times by division meetings.
Mr. Foist said he sensed "a
deep feeling of concern, a sense
of responsibility that the church
has to move forward on the feet of
ordinary people like you and
me".
"We have so much at stake
here in Huron-Perth Presbytery
to offer to the London conference
as we work with other
Presbyteries", he said,
Rev. Migiel Stephenson,
serving in India under the United
Church of Canada and now on a
five-month furlough until May 20
at her home in Toronto, was guest
speaker at the meeting.
Miss Stephenson said the
problem of a population explosion
in. India is being tackled by
family planning education.
However, she said, the village
people in India are tradition
bound and suspicious of any
change.
Poverty and illiteracy are two
other main problems which India
faces. There is much disease and
lack of good sanitation. Unem-
ployment is high, she said,
Because of a drought in the
north-west areas of India vast
multitudes have no food or water
and many have left their homes
to go to the cities for relief.
The Indian government has set
up schools within two or three
miles of every family. Clinics and
dispensaries are available and
nurses and doctors are sent out to
deal with the sick.
However, there is only one
doctor for every 5,000 people and
one nurse for every 70,000 people.
There are 65 million children who
are still not in schools.
By SHERRY CECIL
Over 120 Christian
denominations all across Canada
will join together in worship
Friday in observance of the
World Day of Prayer.
Designed to "spread Christ's
kingdom through united prayer
and action", the World Day of
Prayer has a history dating as far
back as 1887, when a Day of
Prayer for Home Missions was
instituted by the Women's Board
of Home Missions Presbyterian
Church, U.S.A.
Since then it has come a long
way, through the Women's
Interdenominational Da'y of
Prayer for Missions in 1920 to the
United Day of Prayer in 1922,
when it was joined by Canadian
churchwomen, and finally to its
permanent title in 1927 of the
World Day of Prayer.
Today, millions of people in
over 150 countries, including over
more than 3,500 Canadian
communities, observe this day of
worship, work and fellowship.
And Exeter will not allow the
day to pass by unnoticed. A local
service is scheduled for 2:30 p.m.
Friday at Exeter United Church,
with Mrs. Don Wilson as speaker
and Mrs. Cecil Smith as soloist.
The theme of the program,
which was written by New
Zealand women of European and
Maori descent, is "alert in our
time - to be alert to every op-
portunity of loving service to all
mankind". Scripture readings
will be from "Good News for
Modern Man,"
Services will also be held in
Hensall, Dashwood, and other
area communities.
Traditionally the first day of
Lent, the World Day of Prayer
was changed in 1968 to the first
Friday in March. It is sponsored
by the Women's Inter-Church
Council of Canada, which in-
cludes 11 denominations with six
members each.
The Council is responsible for
writing and editing the worship
services and special programs
are produced for children as well
as adults. Programs are also
printed in French, Japanese,
Chinese and Braille.
It also serves on such
organizations as the John Milton
Society for the Blind in Canada,
Miss Stephenson is a member
of the Church of North India, a
union of six denominations for-
med in November, 1970.
She spends much of her time
teaching music in seminars,
workshops and institutes.
The Presbytery appointed a
team to be responsible for
Christian development in the
Presbytery, They will be working
with Rev, Morley Clark, London,
field secretary of Mission in
Canada. Appointed are: Rev,
Robert Raymont, Mrs. Cora
Thistle, Harold Knisely, Rev,
Barrie Robinson, Rev, Glen
Wright, Rev. Bruce Guy, Rae
Grant, and Mrs. Moira Couper.
One report revealed total
membership in the church in the
two counties is down by 2,235 for a
total of 21,509 in 1972. Baptisms
are down by 72 and marriages by
50, The number of new members
was down by 95 and attendance at
sunday school dropped 1,316 to a
total of 5,771.
The day-long session was at-
tended by 95 clergy and lay
delegates.

Well, it's that time of year
again at the University of
Western Ontario - namely,
Slack Week fer, Conference
Week), when all those university
students put their noses to the
SHERRY CECIL
grindstone and get caught up on
all their studies.
Who's kidding who? Slack
Week's really the time for sun
and fun in Florida or snow and
skiing out West or the Winter
Carnival in Quebec City.
But not for everybody, Sherry
Cecil, a second-year Journalism
student at Western, is in Exeter
this week participating in an
internship program with the T-A.
The program, now in its fourth
year, is designed to give students
experience and insight into the
production of a weekly
newspaper.
"And I'm enjoying every
minute of it," says 20-year-old
Sherry. "I've been given a lot of
free rein and a chance to get
involved in nearly every aspect of
news writing."
Sherry, who is from
Burlington, Ontario, hopes to
finish the four-year course in
Journalism at Western and
continue with a career in the
news field.
