moved ahead as Brian Clarke
scored on a pass from Morley
Obre and defenceman Phil
Knight fired a successful shot on
a solo dash.
The only Port Dover goal was
fired by Mike Saunders. Exetc-,

the play as the outcome was in
doubt until the final two minutes
of the game.
With only two minutes and five
seconds remaining, Exeter held a
slim 3-2 lead, At this point captain
John Van Gerwen took over and
scored three times to put the
game on ice.
Van Gerwen's first goal which
proved to be the winner came on
a hard shot after he took a pass
from Steve Baynham. With the
score 4-2, Ken Pinder of Exeter
was sent off for tripping and Port
Dover went to the attack with six
forwards as they lifted their
goalie.
Doug Osgood with some fine
forechecking in the Port Dover
end of the rink came up with the
puck and got it back to Van
Gerwen who fired a high shot into
the net from a very sharp angle.
Only two seconds remained
when Van Gerwen picked up a
loose puck and waltzed in to score
the final goal of the game and
complete a hat trick per-
formance.
Mike Saunders, Port Dover's
top scoring threat opened the
game counting in the first period,
Doug Osgood tied the score when
he was able to deflect a shot from
John Van Gerwen from the left
boards into the net,
Howard Schenk gave Exeter a
2-1 lead as he took a pass from
Jim Webb, worked his way in
front of the Port Dover cage and
fired a backhander home.
Brian Horrell bagged the locals
third goal as he converted passes
from Ken Pinder and Jim Webb.
Saunders narrowed the Exeter
margin to 3-2 and the outcome
was in doubt until Van Gerwen
went on his scoring spree.
Both goal tenders turned in
excellent efforts. Richard
Walmsley for Port Dover was
outstanding throughout and
Laurie Skinner his Exeter
counterpart was equally im-
pressive coming up with several
good saves to keep the opposition
from any further scoring.
The game was more than an
hour late in starting due to a
severe snowstorm which kept the
speed of the Port Dover bus to
about 30 miles per hour.

On home ice at the Exeter
arena, the local pee wees scored
two goals in the last six minutes
of regulation time to force Delhi
into overtime. They went on to
score three times in the extra 10
minute period and posted a 6-3
victory.
This squared the best-of-three
series at a game apiece and
forces a final contest to be played
in Delhi Sunday afternoon at two
oc'clock. The Delhi club won the
first game on their home ice a
week earlier by a score of 4-3,
again in overtime.
In earlier playoffs the Exeter
club sidelined St. Marys and
South London in the minimum of
two games each,
The first period Sunday was
scoreless as play was mostly
confined to the centre ice area,
Neither team was able to muster
much of an attack.
In the second period, the only
goal was produced by Norman
Stefan of Delhi. Stefan who
played all but about two minutes
of the 70 minute contest scored at
6.07 of the middle frame on a
dazzling effort.
He picked up the puck in his
own end and skated past all five
Exeter defenders with blazing
speed and scored as he cut back
quickly in front of the net after
going almost too far.
The only time Stefan was able
to get a rest was when he was
penalized in the third period.
Exeter scored quickly and his
stay was cut short. flel was

FOR AR GOOD SPORTS
By Ross Haugh
Centennial
is away
Exeter's Centennial celebrations are off to a good start
thanks to the executive and membership of the Exeter
Figure Skating club.
The club's annual carnival Saturday which was staged
in afternoon and evening shows emphasized Centennial and
the history of Exeter and the area.
It has to be the best figure skating carnival ever
presented locally. First of all, this year's membership of 175
is the largest in history and the executive along with pro
Brad Loosley did an excellent job in putting the whole show
together.
Carnival chairman Karen Pfaff and her entire com-
mittee of conveners are to be commended on a terrific
show. The costumes were colorful and the show kept moving
along at a good rate of speed.
If the balance of Centennial celebrations planned for
this year are as interesting and well organized we should be
in for a successful recognition of Exeter's 100th birthday.
Congratulations on producing a top notch show.
Making good progress
Two of Exeter's minor hockey teams are continuing
with excellent performances in Ontario Minor Hockey
Association playdowns.
The Legion sponsored bantams advanced to the fourth
round of provincial play Sunday as they disposed of Port
Dover in the second game of a best-of-three series.
The bantam club handled by Ray Brooks and Bob
Osgood now take on either New Hamburg or Niagara-on-
the-Lake. The 14 and under youngsters have now compiled
six straight victories after losing the first game of the open-
ing round to St. Marys. South London was the other club to
fall by the wayside.
After losing the first game of a best-of-three series to
Delhi, the Legion Auxiliary pee wees bounced back Sunday
with two goals in the last six minutes of regulation time to
force the Delhi club into overtime. They came up with three
unanswered overtime scores to force a third and deciding
game slated for the Delhi arena this coming Sunday after-
noon.
In contrast to the bantams playoff pattern, the pee wees
won four straight games in polishing off St. Marys and South
London before running into Delhi.
A continuation of wrestling
Thanks to the efforts of Doug Ellison, the excellent
wrestling coach at South Huron District High School,
youngsters in this area will have the opportunity to continue
with the grappling sport after they finish school.
Ellison is the driving force behind organization of a
South Huron wrestling club. He says once the club gets roll-
ing he will drop out and let others carry on. Arnold
Westelaken, a top wrestler with South Huron last year when
they won the WOSSA championship will be the coach of the
new club. He is presently working in London.
The club will give young men who have graduated from
school a chance to continue their wrestling careers in addi-
tion to those still carrying on their education in various
stages.
A meeting for all those interested in joining the wrestl-
ing club will be held at South Huron District High. School
Tuesday night, March 6 at 7,30 p.m. Anyone who can't make
the meeting and wishes to join may leave a message at the
school at 235-0880 or at Doug Ellison's residence at 235-1772.
The only requirements necessary is that the members
be at least 16 years of age. The club will be affiliated with
the Ontario Amateur Wrestling Federation.
The purpose of the club in addition to providing extra
wrestling instruction will be to allow those who wish to
qualify as wrestling referees.
Ellison emphasizes that while the club will be called
South Huron, it actually has no boundaries and he will
welcome members from North Huron as well as Middlesex
or any other areas interested.
Coaching clinics
The Ontario Hockey Association is now planning 1973-74
coaching development programs under the direction of Ron
Smith, their technical director.
One day OHA clinics will be held in September and Oc-
tober in Toronto, North Bay, Peterboro, Kitchener,
Chatham and St. Catharines.
Very specific, wide ranging topics will be presented by
top hockey men including Roger Neilsen of Peterboro, Tom
Watt of the University of Toronto, Bill Mahoney of
McMaster, Don Hayes of Windsor and Ron Watson of
Western.
The fee is eight dollars and includes a 135 page manual,
two coaching booklets, lunch, eight hours of lectures,
demonstrations, ice participation, films, equipment display
and discussion.
Of more interest locally would be a three hour basic
clinic designed for coaches wishing or needing to gain more
information on the basic skills, on organizing practices,
equipment, teaching methods and general philosophy.
Included will be lectures, films and a one hour ice
demonstration. Clinics may be held in any area with a fee of
$25 per group or $1 per man, whichever is greater.
The OHA leaflet we received advises any group wishing
to stage a clinic to reply before March 31 with four alternate
dates, two before Christmas and two after on which a clinic
could be held.
Since 60 associations had clinics in 1972-73, an early rep-
ly is requested to ensure receiving preference in scheduling
a clinic.
Also available is membership in an Ontario Hockey
Coaches Association. This is open to any coach in the
province for a fee of two dollars per year.
For the fee each member coach would receive an iden-
tification card, a monthly newsletter, instructional
materials, access to resource materials and other benefits.
High up in scoring
According to the latest OHA Senior "B" statistics
released by statistician Nick Martin of Woodstock, four
members of the Lucan-Ilderton Jets are among the top 15
sharpshooters in the league.
After leading for some time, playing coach Jack Nairn
of the Jets has dropped back to second place with 83 points,
Bob Jeffrey of Stratford leads with 88 points. Jamie Robb is
in fourth spot with 66 points while Jacques Cousineau has ac-
cumulated 45 points and Bill Fairbairn, an exeter native
has 42 points.
Larne Daer of the Jets leads the league's goal tenders
'with an average of 3.67 goals allowed per game, Bill Bourne
is second in penalties with 111 minutes and Barry Baynham
is third with 88 minutes in the sin bin.
Jamie Robb has fired six game winning goals and also
scored 10 power play goals.
