A decision on the fate of the
controversial wall of the Huron
County jail in Goderich has been
delayed, at least for a few weeks.
Don Southcott, Progressive
Conservative candidate in the
March 15 byelection told the Save
the Jail committee Tuesday that
he had been assured by Huron
County Warden Roy Pattison and
the county property committee
chairman Harold Lobb that no
decision will be made until April
1.
Huron County council decided
last month to tear down one of the
jail walls to make room for an
addition to the regional
assessment office. This has
resulted in some public in-
dignation.
The moratorium was called to
see what action the province will
take on a task force's recom-
mendation for preservation of
historical and architectually
significant buildings in Ontario,
The Conservative candidate
said legislation is being drafted
which may give municipalities
power to designate historical
buildings that should be
preserved.
If the legislation becomes law,
municipalities could safeguard
preservation of designated
structures and control any
alterations or renovations by
building owners.
Mr. Southcott criticized some
aspects of the public opposition to
tearing down the wall. He said he
objected to the innuendo and
criticism directed at municipal
and county officials over the jail
issue.
Municipal officials have ac-
ted"responsibly and sensitively
to the situation," he said.
Other candidates in the
byelection, New Democrat Paul
Carroll and Liberal Jack Riddell,
told the meeting they strongly
supported retaining the jail as it
now stands.
Mr. Carroll called it a
"monument" to the way of life
and thinking of the pioneers who
formed Huron County.
Mr. Riddell called for a per-
manent ban on destruction of the
jail.
About 2000 people decided they
would like to be in jail for at least
a short visit last Sunday.
They started to line up at 2 p.m.
for a tour of the Huron County
Jail and about 300 were still lined
up when the doors closed at 5
p.m.
The open house was sponsored
by the county to allow the public
to tour the 131-year-old structure
which closed as a prison last
year.
County officials were strongly
criticized for closing the doors on
people who had waited more than
an hour to take the tour. Between
200 and 300 people were still in-
side the jail when the entrance
door was closed.
Goderich Deputy Reeve Stan
Profit said, however that the
doors were closed at 5 p.m. as
advertised but "we opened 10 or
15 minutes later". He said those
Okay addition
for business
Five building permits were
tentatively approved by Exeter
council this week, all being
subject to final approval of the
building inspector.
Norm Whiting appeared before
council to request permission to
erect a 70' by 38' addition to the
former church on Main St. from
which he operates a used fur-
niture and antique business.
He had not submitted a written
request, but filled one in at the
meeting and it was approved by
council,
Other permits approved were
as follows: Ross Richardson, to
renovate house at 168 William;
Mel Gaiser, to renovate house at
273 Pryde and build a small
addition; Armac Company, to
apply vinyl siding to house at 190
Main; J.F, Farm Machinery Ltd.
to erect a sign at their building on
Thames Road East.
who "stuck around" got to go
through the jail.
Joan Van den Broeck,
president of the Save The Jail
committee called the closing of
the door "arrogant" and
"irresponsible,"
)31.1t she said the size of the
crowd indicated widespread
public support for keeping the jail
intact as an historical site,
Deputy Reeve Profit, a
member of the county's property
committee which recommended
demolishing the wall said the
county was "delighted at the
turnout".
But, he said, no one on the
property committee was ap-
proached by visitors with pleas to
save the wall,
"Most people were asking
where Stephen Truscott's cell
was, or which courtyard people
were hanged in," he said.
The deputy reeve said a
resume of the county's position
on the jail issue will be tabled at
county council's meeting Friday.
