Minors in OMHA third round play
Exeter's two minor hockey
teams wasted little time in
disposing of South London in a
pair of Ontario Minor Hockey
Thanks to a pair of come-from-
behind efforts, the Exeter Hawks
currently hold a one game lead
over the Clinton Mustangs in the
semi-final playoff round of the
Ontario Hockey Association
Junior Western grouping.
In the first game of the best-of-
seven series, Friday night, the
Hawks overcame a 3-1 deficit and
went on to post a 4-3 win in
overtime.
Sunday night in Clinton it was
the same story as the Hawks
scored with less than five
minutes to go in the third period
to gain a 2-2 tie with the
Mustangs. A ten minute overtime
period failed to break the
deadlock.
The third game of the series is
at the Exeter arena Friday night

over the second place Canners at
the top of the standings.
The Dart Sharks are in third
place with 55 points, the Dark
Angels follow in fourth with 59
and the Doublers and Late Niters
are deadlocked for the next

The Exeter Legion Auxiliary
pee wees went on scoring sprees
in both games against the London
at 8.30 with the fourth in Clinton
again Sunday night and a fifth
back in Exeter next Tuesday
night.
In other playoff action, the
Mitchell Hawks lead the
Strathroy Falcons two games to
one while the Belmont Sunsets
drubbed the Lucan Irish 1-1 in
their first game.
Come Close
In the dying minutes of the
third period and again in over-
time the Hawks came close to
getting the winning goal but the
puck failed to go into the net.
The first period was scoreless
and the Hawks notched the only
goal of the second session'. At
came from the stick of defen-
ceman Randy Tiernan on a three-
way effort with Kevin Bestard
and Brian Campbell.
Clinton took to the attack in the
third period. Dan Colquhoun
evened the score at 9.34 and less
than five minutes later he hit the
target again to put the Mustangs
in front.
The tying marker for the
Hawks was shot by Glenn Weido
with the assist going to Pete
Glover at 15.57.
Referees Jim Shurrie and Jim
Bya tt called a total of 13 penalties
with the Hawks taking seven. The
only penalty to affect the scoring
came in the third period when
Colquhoun notched his second
goal while captain Jim Guenther
of the Hawks was off for tripping.
Guenther was the hero of the
Hawks overtime win Friday
night as he blasted the puck past
Gary Yeoman in the Clinton nets
at the 7.45 mark of the extra
session. The burly defenceman
scored on an unassisted effort.
The Mustangs scored twice in
the first period and once early in
the third while the Hawks could
only get a midway first period
score.
Ron Graham and Paul Johnson
were the Clinton marksmen in
the opening session with goals
only 23 seconds apart while John
Mommersteeg tallied for the
Hawks on a good combination
with Perry Stover and Harry
Smits.
Clinton moved ahead 3-1 with a
club chalking up wins by scores
of 11-1 and 14-3;
At the same time the Legion
bantams sidelined their South
goal at 19 seconds of the closing
session, It didn't take the Hawks
too long to get back on even
terms,
At 2.34 Perry Stover made the
score closer as he finalized a play
with Brian Bestard and Pete Gill,
Only four minutes later Brian
Campbell put the two clubs on
even terms with assists going to
Gill and Stover.
Penalties played a big part in
Friday's scoring. All three
Clinton goals came with Hawks in
the penalty box while two of the
Exeter goals were produced with
one opposition player resting in
the sin bin.
Craig driver
finishes 39th
A rookie racing team from
Western Ontario placed 39th
Sunday in the 14th annual
Daytona 500 auto race at Daytona
Beach, Florida.
Earl Ross, who hails from Ailsa
Craig was haunted with engine
trouble during his racing stay in
Florida.
In Thursday's 125 mile
qualifying race, Ross finished
14th with his Red Cap "52", a 1972
Chevrolet Monte Carlo. He was
able to complete the race despite
blowing a valve.
A brand new 427 cubic inch
motor was put into the car
Saturday but it also "conked out"
after completing only 34 laps.
The Ailsa Craig driver earned
$1,025 in the big race, plus a
guaranteed bonus of $10,000 from
Canadian Breweries Limited,
sponsors of the team for com-
pleting at least one lap.
The sponsors have reportedly
spent close to $150,000 since July
in preparation for the big race.
The seven man crew charged
with keeping the car in operation
is headed by Ken McKichan.
The Daytona 500 was won by
Richard Petty. First prize money
totalled $34,100.

in Exeter Wednesday night and
came right back with a 5-3 vic-

to breathe after the London
victory before they were back
into action, this time in the third
round of OMHA playoffs.
They travelled to Delhi Sunday
afternoon and were edged 4-3 in
overtime, The second contest is
slated for the Exeter arena,
Sunday afternoon at 4,30 p.m.

Dover series will meet either
New Hamburg or Niagara-on-
the-lake.
High scoring
The pee wees fattened their
scoring averages against South
London as they scored no less
than 25 goals in the two games
with the goals being spread
around reasonably well.

Danny Bell gained a hat trick to
lead the team to victory. Next in
line with two goals apiece were
David Bogart, Dennis Preszcator
and Paul Pooley.
Adding single goals to aid the
winning cause were Brian
Mercer and Derek Regier.

an evening contest in Goderich

FOR Al,fw GOOD SPORTS
By Ross Haugh
Exciting
carnival
Saturday the first of many of the celebrations to com-
memorate Exeter's 100th birthday will be held.
It's the Exeter figure skating club annual carnival and it
promises to be bigger and better than ever. For the first
time the show will be staged with two performances. In ad-
ditional to the usual Saturday night event, a Saturday
matinee will' be held.
Club president Jack Underwood and his enthusiastic ex-
ecutive and club pro Brad Loosley have been working
energetically on making the show a great success.
More than 175 area boys and girls are registered in the
club and all will see action in at least one number in the car-
nival which is entitled, "A Centennial Salute on Blades to
Boot."
The first half of the carnival will feature some of the
younger skaters in preparation for a big Centennial party
with acts including balloons, fruit salad and a birthday cake,
The second portion will be aimed at a historical look
over the past one hundred years. Included will be an old
fashioned parade, Indian chiefs, square dances, covered
wagons and of course rodeo action.
Spectators will again be treated to several comedy acts.
Jack Underwood refrained from telling us exactly what the
laugh getting performances will be but he did say, "there
will be some horsing around and that's no bull, Also, the one
act will be lovabull."
The guest skaters are again of top quality. They are
Janice Blakely and Reid McDonald of the Preston figure
skating club and Jeff Loosley, a brother of the Exeter pro.
Jeff finished second in the novice division in the recent
Western Ontario championships.
• An interesting fact in this year's club is the large
number of boys participating. More than 40 boys are
members. About half of these are enrolled in power skating
courses, some play on Exeter's minor all star hockey teams
but all will be taking part in the carnival.
This carnival always provides plenty of entertainment
and a few smiles as the youngest of the figure skaters go
through their performances.
It's well worth your support and time for a couple of
hours come Saturday afternoon or evening.
Congratulations
Congratulations go to a couple of Exeter sporting teams
who turned in excellent performances over the week-end
and came close to bringing home the big awards.
First of all a curling rink representing the Exeter
Legion placed second in the all-Ontario curling cham-
pionships held in Trenton last week.
The rink skipped by Jim Hewitt won six games while
losing two and were in contention for the provincial crown
right down to the final game. They lost their last game 6-4. A
win in this contest would have given the Exeter boys a tie
for first place with the Georgetown club which eventually
were named winners.
Other members of the runner-up Exeter rink were
Press Lavier, Peter Raymond and Jake Marks.
The wrestling team from South Huron District High
School again came close to the Western Ontario Secondary
Schools Association title in Sarnia, Saturday. Going into the
finals, the Panthers trailed by only five points but were un-
able to make up the deficit.
Dave Cyr won an individual championship in his weight
class.
Close Playoffs
Playoff hockey is speeding up this week with three Ex-
eter clubs still in the running and the competition is really
keen.
In the OHA Junior "D" semifinal, the Exeter Hawks
and Clinton Mustangs are hooked up in a real battle. The
Hawks won the first game Friday night 4-3 in overtime
while the two teams went an extra ten minutes Sunday night
and ended in a 2-2 draw.
The series which continues at the Exeter arena Friday
night goes back to Clinton Sunday and here the following
Tuesday for a fifth contest is providing an excellent brand of
hockey.
The minor hockey teams are also dishing up exciting ac-
tion. The Exeter pee wees after disposing of St. Marys and
London South dropped a close 4-3 decision to Delhi Sunday in
the first of a best-of-three series in OMHA play. The game
was decided in overtime.
The second game of the pee wee set goes at the Exeter
arena Sunday afternoon at 4.30, This is a good chance to
come out and support the enthusiastic young hockey players
as they try to advance down the playoff trail.
The bantams are also starting out in third round provin-
cial play. After eliminating St. Marys and London South, the
bantams now take on Port Dover. The first game was
played in Exeter Wednesday night and the second contest
goes in Port Dover Sunday. afternoon at two o'clock,
We met a very enthusiastic hockey fan from Port Dover
in St. Joseph's hospital in London last week. He tells us Port
Dover has a strong club with one of their top players being
Len Jankowski, a son of former big leaguer Len Jankowski,
now performing in the Western league.
Drastic steps
While most professional hockey teams are putting the
prices of their admission tickets up, Charlie Finley owner of
the California Golden Seals is doing the exact opposite.
Finley is taking drastic steps to turn the poor home
attendance situation around for his team. He is reported
prepared to cut the ticket prices in half for the remaining
Seals home games this season,
Finley was quoted as saying, "If I'm going to go broke
I'd rather do it with a full house at half the price than 2,500
fans at full price."
A bowling special
Just received a bulletin from the Exeter cowling Lanes.
Russ King rattled the pins Monday night for a score of 343.
Wait a minute before anyone gets real excited, the score
was for three games. Russ Compiled scores of 118, 95 and
130, Real improvement in the last game.
