"the process of aging can no
longer be considered by the
calendar year. Age is relative,"
said Josef Risi, administrator of
the Bluewater Rest Home in
Zurich when he spoke to the South
Huron Hospital Auxiliary
Tuesday afternoon.
The single most important
consideration, continued Mr. Risi
is to appreciate the problems of
(he elderly, "especially what it is
like to be, or to be considered
old".
In addition, he said, people are
always handicapped by inex-
perience when dealing with older
people, because no-one has been
old.
Mr. Risi said that many people
are unprepared for the extension
of the number of years one can
now expect to live. Anyone born
before 1900 couldn't, expect to
love beyond 47 years of age. Now,
he said, the expectant life-span is
70 years. and is longer for women
than for men,
"But the desire for in-
dependence and freedom is one of
the greatest assets an older
person has," he said. "Their
personalities do not change, only
their physical capacities and
social opportunities."
The most important con-
sideration when dealing with
older people, said Mr. Risi is to
"respect the unique individuality
of each older person. No two
people, young or old are exactly
alike and each should be free to
make her own, dependent
opinions".
He outlined several different
suggestions which would help
enrich the life of an elderly friend
or relative, This included making
scheduled dates and ap-
pointments with her and always
letting her know when you expect
to see her again. "Anticipation is
half the fun", said Mr. Risi.
Make sure you have important
and interesting subjects for
conversation, he suggested, and
listen carefully when an older
person is talking. In this way, he
said you can get new insights into
their interests and feelings.
Be said you should encourage
any interests the person may
have and keep her moving in that
direction. You shouldn't however
push beyond their strength, or
criticize them constantly, or
contradict then?. There is a
difference between expression of
disagreement and contradiction,
he noted.
Ile also suggested that it is very
important to let them do as much
for you as they are willing and
able.
Often, said Mr. Risi, the
critical question of having to find
a home for an older friend or
relative must be answered.
Each case must be judged on an
individual basis, he said, but
above all, "as far as possible,
they must make their own
decisions,"
"It is no more difficult to grow
old than to grow up," he con-
cluded.

CONCENTRATION — Karen Wells, 4, of Exeter, seems to be putting
everything she's got into her drawing for June Martene, a Huron Coun-
ty Public health Nurse. Karen was just one of the many area children
who participated in the child screening clinic at the county health of-
fices. The tests and activities she was asked to try varied with other age
groups, and were designed to measure developmental and motor skills,
not intelligence.
Mr. Risi was born.and raised on
a farm in Switzerland and came
to North America in 1959,
In the business portion of the
meeting, the auxiliary members
passed a motion to buy a new
portable television for the RNA
girls in residence, as well as an
electric kettle.
Mrs. Olga Davis, president,
presided for the meeting.

Waste glass
More glass containers in the
house than leftovers to put in
them? Consumers should aid in
recycling waste by taking bottles
to the nearest recycling depot.
Recycled waste glass can serve
the consumer. "Glasphalt", a
road paving material, fibreglass
insulation, bricks and aerated
concrete are a few of the products
made from old bottles.
DesJardine and the ringbearer
was David Gratton.
The reception was held at
Dashwood Community Centre.
For travelling the bride changed
to a sky-blue dress with navy coat
and navy accessories.
The bride is the daughter of Mr.
and Mrs. Gordon Price, Exeter,
and the groom is the son of Mr.
and Mrs. Gerald Gratton,
Tampa, Florida.
The couple will reside in
Tampa.
