SH wrestlers grab H-P crown
L 1k
The South Huron District High School wrestling team won the
Huron-Perth championship for the fourth straight year at Clin-
ton Central Secondary school Friday afternoon. The full local
school squad will be competing Saturday in the WOSSA
championships at Sarnia St. Clair in an attempt to bring back
the Western Ontario title won for the first time last year. The
seven members of the wrestling squad shown in the accom-
panying pictures with a star won Huron-Perth individual
championships while the others were well up in the running.
Hawks head junior league,
playoffs starting this week
FOR ALL poop SPORTS
By Ross
Playoff
time
Despite the fact the weatherman has just decided to
give us some winter weather, the 1972-73 hockey season is
quickly drawing to a close.
The Exeter Hawks have just completed the regular
season with an outstanding record and will be heading into
the Playoffs with the first game of a best-of-seven semi-
final series taking place at the Exeter arena Friday night at
8.30.
With the battle for third, fourth and fifth spots in the
league standings being very close, the first opponent for the
Hawks was not definitely known at the time this column was
being written.
It is expected the Clinton Mustangs who have given the
Hawks some trouble in the schedule will be their opening
round opposition. In Sunday's final game of the schedule,
the Hawks edged the Clinton club by a score of 4-2.
While the Hawks are preparing for the playoffs, two of
the town's minor clubs have already advanced to the second
round of Ontario Minor Hockey Association playoffs.
The pee wee and bantam clubs disposed of St. Marys in
the first round and are now meeting South London in another
set of series. The next opponent for the winners of these two
sets will likely come from the Southern Counties area. We
understand the Port Dover bantams are ready to go.
The Exeter Broncos are awaiting their first round of
OMHA play in the novice division,
The next few weeks will provide plenty of exciting ac-
tion for area hockey fans as the clubs of all age divisions
head down the playoff trail.
Another good performance
The wrestling team at South Huron District High School
won its third straight Huron-Perth Conference cham-
pionship in Clinton Friday afternoon.
The South Huron grapplers now head for Sarnia St. Clair
this Saturday in an attempt to hold the WOSSA cham-
pionship one a year ago.
In addition to winning the H-P team title, seven
members of the local school team won individual cham-
pionships. The entire team will be involved in the WOSSA
finals at Sarnia.
The trophy they brought home from Clinton is a new one
donated to the Huron-Perth group this year by Dashwood In-
dustries.
An important weekend
It seems each weekend provides special entertainment
in the sports field and this week is no exception with a very
important event on the agenda.
Time has again rolled around for the annual Crippled
Children's Day at the Pineridge Chalet near Hensall. It's not
really one day, but three this year. Ontario's crippled
children will again benefit from the well organized ac-
tivities at the Pineridge.
Actually five sessions are planned this year starting
Friday night with a snowmobile party, trail rides and a
dance to the music of the popular Joe Overholt.
Saturday afternoon will be devoted to snowmobiling and
free rides for the children along with a jam session. Dancing
will again be staged Saturday night.
Sunday morning. the always popular pancake and
sausage breakfast will be served with the best pancake
cookers in the world on the griddle. The old standbys Bob
Baker and Russ Tieman will again be joined by CFPL Lon-
don's gourmet cook and poet Bill Brady.
The Sunday afternoon program features a host of radio
and TV personalities from London. Wingham and Kitchener.
The most important guest of the whole weekend will be 12-
year-old Duncan Minnis. London's Timmy for 1973.
In addition entertainment is being provided by local
talent including Bob and Danny Heywood. Joe Overholt and
the Staf'fa step dancers.
Throughout the five sessions, the very delicious
mooseburgers, venison burgers and hot roast moose
sandwiches will be on sale.
See you at the Pineridge. It's a worthy cause and you
will be sure to have lots of fun.
On the mend
We are happy to report this week that Jim "Red"
Loader is making excellent progress in his recovery from a
recent heart attack.
The popular hockey star and coach of Exeter clubs of a
few years ago is now able to have visitors at the Petrolia
hospital where he is confined,
Interesting statistic
Henri Richard scored a goal for the Montreal Canadiens
in an NHL game Saturday afternoon. This doesn't sound like
exciting news but it sort of reaches a milestone in the NHL.
The goal for the Pocket Rocket brings his NHL total to
374. Add to this 626 scored by his more famous brother
Maurice "The Rocket" and one finds this adds to a grand
total of one thousand goals. A lot of scores for one brother
combination.
Answers - The members of the Toronto Maple Leafs
KLM line of the 1940's were Ted Kennedy, Vic Lynn and
Howie Meeker,
We received a letter this week from a staunch hockey
tan in Grand Bend with a question regarding coloured
hockey players in professional hockey,
We can't really be sure if Murray Des Jardins is trying
to test our knowledge of the game or just wants to know the
answer when he asks if there has been a coloured player
make the grade in professional hockey.
In his letter he asks, "If there was one, what is his
name, home town, junior hockey club and NHL team?
For Mr, Des Jardins' information, there have been
two, Willie O'Ree, a graduate of the Kitchener-Waterloo
Canucks played 45 games in the 1957-58 season with the
Boston Bruins. lie also played with the Kingston Frontenacs
in the Eastern pro league.
In addition, Alton White started this season with the
New York Raiders of the WHA but Was traded to the Los
Angeles Sharks of the same league,
Questions - Which goalies hold the record for the most
assists in one NHL Season?
Who was the first winner of the Vezina trophy? A hint,
he played with the Montreal Canadiens at the time.
The Exeter Hawks wound up
the Ontario Hockey Association
Junior "D" western group with 53
points and a comfortable nine
point lead over the second place
Mitchell Hawks.
In the first round of playoffs,
the Hawks will meet the Clinton
Mustangs in a best-of seven
series. Mitchell takes on the
Strathroy Falcons in a best-of-
five series while the Lucan Irish
take on the Belmont Sunsets in a
similar set.
The first game of the Exeter-
Clinton series will be played at
the Exeter arena Friday night at
8.30 with the second contest back
in Clinton Sunday night. The third
is in Exeter February 23, the,
fourth in Clinton February 25 and
additional games if necessary
will be in Exeter February 27,
Clinton March 2 and Exeter
March 4.
The Lucan-Belmont series
opens Saturday night in Belmont
with the second game set for the
Lucan arena, Wednesday,
February 21 while Strathroy is at
Mitchell Friday night for their
first contest.

Spare goalie Dwight Jennison
was in the nets for the Hawks in
both games and turned in solid
performances. Regular John
Hayter out with an injured knee
is expected to be ready to go in
the Clinton series.
In front early
The Hawks took a 2-1 lead after
the first period of play against
Tavistock Thursday and never
looked back as the posted the 5-2
