This special recognition of Hensalrs minor hockey program will give parents, friends and neighbours a chance to watch every boy in action regardless of his age or size. The big day gets underway at 10 a.m. and the first two hours will be devoted to house league action with Montreal facing New York in the first game and Bostom taking on Toronto in the second contest. At 1.30 the all-star teams see action with the Hensall bantams facing Exeter. The 3.30 time slot will see a midget game with Zurich and Hensall doing battle. The mites, the youngest of boys participating in the hockey program will put on an exhibition of their skills at 6.30 p.m. Members of the Hensall figure skating club are putting on a demonstration of their talents at seven o'clock and this will be followed an hour later by the final game of the day between the Hensall and Seaforth pee wees This is an opportunity for all residents of Hensall and area to get out to the arena not only to watch the youngsters in action but say thanks to the executives, coaches and managers for their many hours spent in looking after the minor winter sports program. Well timed In our remarks last week about the successful Minor Hockey Day held in Exeter we failed to mention the excellent fashion in which the program was L on. Starting at nine o'clock in the morning, the 13 game card was completed at exactly three minutes after ten at night which means it was operated right on the button. The last three minutes of the midget game which wound up the night was played stop time which accounted for the extra couple of minutes. Arena manager Alvin Willert, his crew, EMHA of- ficials, team managers and coaches, referees and other minor officials are to be congratulated on running an excellent show. Interesting new rule The new designated pinch hitter rule to be established in the American baseball league this coming season appears aimed at helping the offensive side of the game. Before each game starts, the managers may name a player whose only role in the game will be to bat for the pitcher who will be allowed to stay in the game. It becomes apparent some managers are already plan- ning on inserting the pitcher's name at the top of the batting order instead of the normal bottom spot. Manager Bill Martin of Detroit has said he would likely name long ball hitting Frank Howard as the designated batter whenever the Tigers play in Boston . Howard would be used in the lead-off position to get more chances to put the ball over the short right field fence at Fenway Park. This new rule should enable some of the older players to stay in the game a couple of years longer. They will be able to concentrate on hitting and not worry about going out to a defensive position. It will be particularly advantageous to the Detroit Tigers who have in addition to Frank Howard fellows like Al Kaline, Bill Freelan and Norm Cash who may be slowing down a bit in the field but still are able to provide power at the plate. Because the rule is not being used in the National league at least for this year it could cause a few problems for American league pitchers who will then be forced to take their normal turn at the plate in the World Series. We can imagine success fellows like Mick Lolich would have at the plate in the fall classic after not having a chance to bat during the entire season. Lolich at his best gets about three hits per season. While Martin has indicated he would use the pinch hitter in the lead-off spot on some occasions we would sort of lean to having him used in the fourth and clean-tip position. This place is usually reserved for the best and usually the longest ball hitter on any team. For example if the Tigers are facing a left handed pitcher they could designate either Kaline or Freehan to this coveted position. This rule should bring about a complete revision in batting orders and strategy used by opposing managers and pitchers. The ninth man in the lineup will no longer be a soft touch so the intentional pass which occasionally went to the eighth man to get at the pitcher will disappear. We can visualize all kinds of "methods of madness' from some of the managers to get the men who have the ability to get on base to hat ahead of not only the clean-up hitter but now the designated hatter. The fellows normally used in the one-two-three spots could now be used down in seven-eight and nine to utilize the power of the designated batter if he was used in the lead-off spot. ••••• The E'a'ter Leger. bi fawns won the 1.1a- tt-1 Shinieak han, tam '13' t•ifirniii cha(4.1 Tne senior Hawks increased their first place lead in the Estate ga ud district Rec hockey iiiinea to live points with an 8-6 .tory over Newby Tire in one of rtitirsda‘ 's two regularly •-cheduled games Ir• 1 iresk- now have 17 points I I( he league while the erpep ded with Les Pines eeriond spot with a dozen points apes it Thursday's other einitest saw 1.es Pines trounce the T'fwarh by a score of 12-3, Steve Morley came up with a ti irk performance to pace the Hawks scoring attack.
