decisions—right or wrong—and
to complain later if necessary, or
to rebuild at even greater ex-

"I hate like hell to be a partner
to destroying something as
historically valuable for
generations to come," Shirley
writes in leaving no doubt as to
her stand on the issue.
Her plea for petitions and
letters to county council regar-
ding the jail recall an earlier
attempt people of Huron made to
get county council to decentralize
their home for the aged,
Hundreds of signatures were
obtained and presentations made
to council, but the majority would
not budge despite the appeal
from the taxpayers.
It appeared to be a snear at
democracy, although we recall
one editor in the county opposing
the populace at that time,
Perhaps Shirley will do better
on this one, although we can point
out from experience, that county
councillors are not always
swayed by a sizable appeal from
the county ratepayers.

fairly—one way or the other.
He's never been in the county
jail, although no doubt there are
many who would have wished
such a fate upon him,
Obviously, it is difficult to
formulate an opinion without
knowing the situation fully and
there is no way anyone can take a
stand without viewing the
structure first hand,
In that regard, we think many
of the signatures appearing on
petitions are worthless. They
don't know what they are at-
tempting to save or whether
Anson McKinley is right when he
states the removal of the wall will
not detract from the building.
From that standpoint, we
question the validity of a petition
containing names of students and
others who don't even know
where the jail is located, let alone
what effect will he created by
tearing down an exercise yard
wall.
Certainly, every member of
county council should personally
inspect the premises and attempt
to view the picture, as it would be
after any changes are made,
before making their final
decision.
Residents of Goderich-- or
those wishing to make an appeal
from either standpoint—should
do the same.
