FOR ALL GOOD SPORTS
By Ross Haugh
Terrific !
---(
Saturday's annual Minor Hockey Day at the Exeter
arena has to be termed a "tremendous success."
Our use of the word success is based on several things.
First of all the attendance throughout the entire day was
very good. The enthusiasm shown by all players competing
in the even dozen contests and an hour of scrimmage for the
smallest fry participating each Saturday in the minor
hockey program was terrific.
Thanks to the co-operation of the weatherman, the gross
revenue Saturday was the highest for any Minor Hockey
Day in the past. The last couple of years storms have
interfered with attendance.
Mothers of members of the Exeter all-star clubs took
care of the kitchen duties in providing lunch for both clubs in
the last eight games of the day.
We can't forget the referees and other minor officials in
giving of their services to make this day the big one in the
year as far as the hockey program is concerned. A lot of
these jobs were taken on by managers and coaches of the
minor teams.
One of the highlights of the day was the appearance of
the bantam team from Trenton, Michigan. The local
bantam team travelled to the Michigan suburb of Detroit a
year ago and this was a return visit.
It's actually only the start of a series of games between
the two hockey organizations. The Exeter Waxers and
Broncos are making a trip to Trenton on the weekend of
March 3 and 4 for a two game series and the same age
teams from Michigan will be in Exeter the following
weekend.
The Waxers are the youngest organized hockey team in
Exeter being boys eight years of age and under in the mite
category.
The Broncos play in the novice division and are 10 years
of age or younger.
While the Exeter Minor Hockey Day was held Saturday
similar activities were held at the Huron Park arena. The
highlight there was a three game series with teams from
Royal Oak Michigan Saturday afternoon.
The Huron Park observance actually started Friday
night with a couple of games as the ice time Saturday night
was taken up by the London Kings playing in OHA Senior
"B" company.
Another busy weekend
With Minor Hockey Day just completed at the Exeter
arena, the scene shifts a block south this week to South
Huron District High School.
The students and staff at South Huron are staging their
annual Winter Carnival Friday, Saturday and Sunday of this
weekend.
While the event is called Winter Carnival, some co-
operation from the weatherman will be needed in order to
,complet,e,so.trie of the outdoor games. The Carnival opens
;Friday afternoon at the arena at two o'clock with the always
popular broomball game between the teaching staff and
grade 13 students. This year a tug-of-war on ice is being
added. •
The different versions of the outcome of the broomball
game each year are quite interesting. Principal Joe Wooden
tells us the teachers have never lost since he took over at the
school while the students claim several victories. What is
probably needed is an unbiased scorekeeper. Where, oh
where, could you find such a person.
The Friday program will be completed with a dance at 9
p.m. featuring the Homestead and the "Hell Fighter"
movie running from midnight until three in the morning.
Students will be up bright and early Saturday morning
to participate in a marathon basketball going from 7 a.m. to
7 p.m. At nine, ping pong, shuffleboard and smash games
will get underway and continue most of the day.
The student council has come up with several unique
and different contests to increase interest for the students.
At ten o'clock Saturday morning, a tricycle race will start.
This will be sort of an obstacle race throughout the
school. A large number of entries have been received so the
race will be run in relays. A real auto race atmosphere will
be attained byohaving race crews, pit stops, wheel changes
and driver changes.
Also included on the morning schedule will be skidoo
and snowshoe orienteering, snow sculpturing and the always
popular powder puff football.
The afternoon program is filled with items of interest.
The indoor events will include pie throwing, taffy pulling,
jello eating and bubble gum blowing along with entertain-
ment by coffee house singers.
The outside program will emphasize snowmobile races,
toboggan and snowshoe races and boat races.
In the evening two Abbott and Costello movies will be
shown beginning at 7.30 p.m. and at nine o'clock a dance will
start featuring the popular group "Edward Bear."
Two showings of the movie "Play Misty For Me" will
be held Sunday at 2 and 7 p.m. and the hours from 9 to 11 will
be available for skating at the Exeter arena.
A coffee house will be set up in the halls of the school
Friday night and all day Saturday.
It sounds like a very interesting program that is lined up
and we hope a large number of students and members of the
staff will take advantage of the opportunity to engage in
many of these fun activities.

Third Period Scoring
Most of the scoring in the 4-2
Exeter win in Belmont came in
the third period. Randy Tieman
scored for the Hawks in the first
period and that was the only
counting until Ed Landon tied the
count at the six minute mark of
the third session.
Doug Hepburn gave the Sun-
sets a very short-lived lead
before the Hawks swung back
into action. In a space of four
minutes the Hawks hit for three
goals and the victory.
Perry Stover fired the
equalizer on passes from Brian
Bestard and Pete Glover while
Brian Campbell scored the
winner with the assist going to
Randy Tiernan. Stover's second
goal of the night provided the
necessary insurance. Pete
Gill and Brian Bestard

ice, Perry Stover's goal at 3,29 of
the third period provided the
Hawks with the margin of vic-
tory.
Brian Campbell accounted for
the other two Hawk scores.

on both while Pete Glover helped
on one.
