Irwin of Seoul, Korea wrote in part "The autumn here has been very wet and has adversely affected the rice crop. There is much unemployment, especially in the out-lying parts of the cities. The schools remain closed for a longer time during the winter months for the purpose of saving on fuel, which means a shorter summer vacation" The annual congregation meeting of the United Church will be held on January 29, at 8:30 p.m. Eight tables of euchre were enjoyed in the Parish Hall on Wednesday evening, Winners were: ladies high, Mrs. Nelson Rock; ladies low, Mrs. John Moser; men's high, Langford Ridley; men's low, Carman Woodburn; lucky number, Mrs. Angeline Scott. The ladies of the parish served refreshments. Mr. & Mrs. Russell Brown visited Harold McDonald in the Goderich Hospital, Wednesday, Mr. & Mrs. Gerald Merner and Stephen, Toronto were weekend visitors here. During their stay they also visited with Mrs. Merner's father, Harvey Eagleson who is a patient in South Huron hospital and with her sister Helen, who is in St. Joseph's hospital, London. Evelyn and Manuel Curts were among those who enjoyed a bus trip to Sarnia last Friday evening to hear a concert sponsored by the Sarnia Christian Concern Inc. in the S.C.I.T,S. auditorium. Jan Lagerwerf accompanied his daughter, Janet of Toronto on a flight to London, England for the weekend. Although it was cold and damp there at the time. Jan claims, they "did the town". Mr, & Mrs. Lawrence Curts, Grand Bend, were Sunday dinner guests of, Mr. & Mrs. Russell Brown and Mrs. Brown's sister and husband Mr. & Mrs. Verne Topping, Strathroy were supper guests. Alice Brown spent the weekend with Mr. & Mrs. Gordon Brown, Grand Bend. Friday evening friends and relatives gathered at the home of Mr. & Mrs. Joe Varley to mark the occasion. Mrs. Varley is their daughter. There are three grandchildren and one great- grandchild. The Heywood brothers were present to en- tertain. The honoured couple received many gifts, cards and treats. Mr4 Mrs. Wein farmed on the fit* Veroad north of Crediton, the ,farm now owned by Hubert Vincent. Seven years ago they moved to Crediton and have made their home with their daughter. They are both in good health, Mr, Wein celebrated his 93rd birthday the first of December, Shower In honour of bride-elect Kathy Gaiser a shower was held in the Zion United Church Sunday School rooms Monday evening. Diane Hodge directed the program and read the address. Mrs, Walter Weber gave a humorous reading. Bonnie, Sue and Judy Mason assisted Kathy in opening the gifts. Before lunch was served Diane and Mrs. Robert Crawford arranged a game of Musical Boxes for the entertainment of the guests. Crediton WI Crediton Women's Institute meeting was held last Wednesday evening in the community hall with 22 members answering the roll call, "Different Ways wheat comes to the table." Mrs. Walter Weber presided for the business. Mrs, Gerald Dearing was chairlady for the program. Ann Dearing and Valerie Finkbeiner favored with piano solos. The motto, "The peace of the world depends on food" was given by Mrs. Gerald Dearing, Barbara Pfaff favored with two solos, Mrs. Aron Wein gave two readings. Mrs. Gerald Dearing then introduced the guest speaker J, A. MacDonald, principal of the Agriculture College at Centralia. His topic was "Canadian Agriculture", He was thanked by Mrs, Gordon Morlock and the program closed with a song. At the next regular meeting the 4-13 girls will be serving supper, On the program committee were Mrs. Ed Hendrick, Mrs. G. Morlock, Mrs. A,Wein and Mrs. G. Dearing. United Church Meeting The annual meeting of Zion United Church Sunday School was held Thursday evening with Howard Hendrick, retiring superintendent, in charge, The white gift offering was divided between the Canadian Sunday School Mission and Children's Village of the Salvation Army. Rev. Armin Schlenker, chairman of the Nominating Committee, presented the slate of officers for 1973: superintendent, Harry Schroeder; assistants, Ross Pickering, Reg Finkbeiner; treasurer, Rev. Schlenker; recording secretaries, Rick Bowers, Wally Fydenchuk; literature secretary, Alf Smith,; minutes secretary, Ella Morlock; pianists, Mrs. Ed Finkbeiner, Barbara Rata, Perry Preszcator; chorister, Mrs. Douglas Warren; superintendent of cradle roll, Mrs. Ray Morlock; superin- tendent of home department, Mrs. Armin Schlenker; projectionist, Paul Fydenchuk. Personals Peter Wuerth has his right arm in a sling following an accident during a hockey game. Mrs. Isaac Gower has returned home after spending several weeks with her daughter Mrs. Alma Brunslow at Strathroy. Mrs. Joe Bullock spent a month with Mr. & Mrs. Edward Darbey, Willowdale. While there her first great-grandchild was born, That gives Mrs. Gower the honour of being great-great-grandmother. Roy Smith is in Victoria Hospital. His car was involved in a head-on collision in London last Tuesday evening. Mr. & Mrs. Alf Smith attended the funeral of Mrs. Isabel Hut- chins, aunt of Mrs. Smith, in Woodbridge, Thursday. Rev. Douglas Warren attended the funeral of a friend in Sault Ste Marie Thursday. By MRS. FRANK PLUMB GRAND BEND Thursday afternoon the Women's Institute met in the Village Hall. After the opening by Pres. Mrs. E. Gill the roll call was answered by my "Favorite TV or radio personality." Business about historical sites was discussed plus planning for 4- H leaders and a fashion show. The group decided to hold a dessert euchre on February 14, Introduced by the "Preamble to the United Nations' Charter" read by Mrs. E. Desjardine, a talk about the "United Nations" was given by the Convener of Citizenship and World Affairs, Mrs. F. Plumb, "United Nations agencies are much more active in our lives than we realize, as they are disguised with abbreviated names," she said. "There are fifteen international organizations. These agencies are actively regulating currency and creating order in the laws of many international services. Vestry Meeting Wednesday evening the annual Vestry Meeting was held at the Anglican Parish Hall. C.W. Neilson was elected the new vestry clerk with Fred Walker the honorary vestry clerk. Rector's warden is to be Ken Young again with deputy warden Jack Mennell. People's warden Maurice MacDonald and deputy warden Bill Cochrane will serve again. Lay delegate to synod is Mrs. C.W. Neilson and alternate delegate John Warner, Treasurer will be Fred Newton with assistant treasurer Goldie Todd. Envelope secretary will be Mrs. Congregational supper planned The annual congregational meeting of Brinsley United Church is to be held January 25. A pot luck supper precedes the meeting. Ralph Rowe sold cattle at Stratford on Friday which topped the sale at $44 per hundred weight. John Jones, Exeter is visiting with Mr. & Mrs. Arnold Wasnidge. Mrs. Eva Allison arrived home from Ottawa Sunday after visiting Mr. & Mrs. Bud Gallagher. Cindy Prest and Sandra Steeper are attending con- firmation classes prior to joining the church at Easter, Mr. & Mrs. Grant Amos are holidaying in Arizona, Mrs. Earl Morley is now making good progress back to good health in St. Mary's Hospital, London. Mr. & Mrs. Ray Mawson, Parkhill visited Wednesday evening with Gordon and Kathleen Morley, Jackie Lewis, nurse in training at London, spent the weekend with her parents Mr. & Mrs. Doug Lewis. By MRS. Preszcator and girls spent Sunday with Mr. & Mrs, Lloyd Regele and girls, Woodstock. Mr, & Mrs. Leonard Wein visited with Mrs. Alex Hamilton last Wednesday, Grand Bend. F, Newton again. Persona Is Bill Love is progressing favorably after an operation on his broken hip sustained in a fall on the ice. He is at home now. Mr. & Mrs. Wm. Thompson spent four weeks with their family in Windsor lately. Mr. & Mrs. Jack Hayter, Toronto were visiting in Grand Bend over the weekend. Mrs. S. M. Barbour, Toronto is visiting her family in Grand Bend for three weeks. Harold Hopkins had a long winter visit with his son Mr. & Mrs. Ed. Hopkins, and daughter Mr. & Mrs. Gary Galbraith, both of Windsor. GRADUATES — John Forrest of Hay P.O. recently graduated from an oil burner and gas fitters course at George Brown College of Applied Arts and Technology.
