Off to the big race
A veteran of 10 years of stock car racing in Western
Ontario gets an opportunity next month to drive in a big race
in the United States.
Earl Ross of Ailsa Craig. now 31 years of age has been
one of the top drivers in this part of the country for many
years. Last year he took the Stock Car Series of Champions
on Ontario tracks. He won 520,000 in prize money and also
won six major events in 1971 in the United States and
Canada.
Ross. now a general foreman at the Ford plant at
Talbotville will be driving in the Daytona 500 race on
February 4 with a car which cost 830.000 to build and can
reach speeds of more than 200 miles per hour.
Canadian Breweries Limited. owners of the car were
impressed by Earl's credentials as a driver that they hired
him and his entire seven man crew to go to Florida for the
big race.
The race has a first prize of 550.000 and among the
entrants will be well-known American drivers like A.J.
Foyt. Bobby Allison and Mark Donohue.
In talking about the race. the Ailsa Craig driver said,
"There will be about 80 cars trying for the 40 spots in the big
race and I'm sure I'll make it. I hope to win but if I finish in
the big one that will be great for me and my crew."
The crew consists of Ken, Stan and Gord McKichan,
Ken Silk. Don Duncan, Charlie Greenlaw and Ron Ling.
Every members of the crew has a specific job during the
race Silk is in charge of changing back tires while
Ling looks after front tire changing.
A pit stop for the Ross crew takes about 22 seconds
which includes .filling the gas tank and changing tires.
Ross estimates his car will consume a gallon of gas for
every five miles of the race and tires will be changed at
least six times during a 500 mile race,
The record time for a pit stop is 15 seconds in the
Indianapolis 500.
The car Earl Ross will drive in the Daytona race is a
1972 Chevrolet built in Toronto by one of his crew. Ken
McKichan. The 427 cubic inch engine generates 535
horsepower at 7,500 revolutions per minute.
We would like to wish the Ailsa Craig driver and his
crew lost of luck as they participate in the big race on
February 4.
