Plans are being quickly finalized for the local obser-
vance of Minor Hockey Day. The big day is set for the
Exeter arena on Saturday, January 27.
It will be a full day of activities with no less than thirteen
hockey games scheduled with every one of the more than 200
boys registered with the Exeter Minor Hockey Association
having an opportunity to perform in at least one contest.
The program will get underway at eight o'clock in the
morning and will continue until at least ten o'clock in the
evening. The regular houseleague activities will take up
most of the morning.
All of the Exeter all-star clubs will be meeting visiting
teams in exhibition games. At the moment teams from
Zurich, Ilderton, Elmira and Trenton, Michigan.
Advance tickets will be on sale later this week from all
players, coaches, managers and executive of the Exeter
Minor Hockey Association.
Tickets selling for one dollar will allow adults and
students to attend any or all of the games for only one
dollar. This is a real bargain and we would hope everyone
joins in in buying ticket thereby showing their interest in
minor hockey.
Near the conclusion of Minor Hockey Day, a draw will
be made from the tickets sold and one lucky person will
receive two tickets to a National Hockey League game at
Maple Leaf Gardens in Toronto.
The motto of the Canadian Amateur Hockey Association
for quite a few years has been, "Don't send your boy to the
arena, but take him and stay to watch him play."
These lines may be getting a bit worn but they still
apply along with the one, "Keep your boy out of hot water by
putting him on ice."
Minor Hockey Day is held not only to let everyone see
the boys in action but gives recognition to the many men and
women who make minor hockey possible.
The local minor hockey group is made up of many
enthusiastic, hard working volunteers whose efforts on
behalf of local youngsters cannot be measured in hours or
dollars. They make it possible for hundreds of our
youngsters to take part in our country's national sport.
Every boy in town can have the opportunity to play. To the
best of our knowledge none has ever been turned away.
That's the kind of organization it is.
More than that, they contribute towards the develop-
ment not only of stronger bodies, but of healthier minds and
better citizens. They keep the youngsters occupied in
healthy supervised sport and off the streets.
Statistics provided by the C.A.H.A. indicate yet another
reason for supporting minor hockey. It is an activity that not
only works for the youngsters but provides employment for
many adults and in addition turns back more than five
million dollars to the Canadian economy each year.
The costs of providing sweaters, skates and other
equipment, the cost of ice rentals, transportation, meals
after games and injury insurance are items that soon run
into many dollars per player and team.
Considering there are more than twelve thousand minor
hockey teams in Canada, it is easy to visualize millions of
dollars being spent to keep the hockey operation going.
Speedy recovery
We join with all sports fans this week in wishing Jim
"Red" Loader a speedy recovery. He suffered a serious
heart attack Thursday night while coaching the Petrolia
intermediate hockey club in a game against Forest.
He was still on a coronary machine Sunday afternoon
but hospital officials listed his condition as stabilized.
Anyone wishing to send cards may address them to
Charlotte Eleanor Englehart Hospital in Petrolia.
Loader was well known in this area as a coach and
player with the Exeter Mohawks hockey club and in
baseball and softball circles.
Good brand of hockey
In addition to the large amount of good hockey provided
by many teams in this area, the London Kings with their
new home at the Huron Park arena have added to the
quantity and quality.
The Kings while not winning as many games as their
supporters would like have been coming mighty close
against the top clubs in the league.
They are adding goalie Mike McIntyre to their roster
this week. McIntyre was a recent cut from the Galt Hornets
of the Senior "A" league.
Hensall tourney Saturday
An exciting minor hockey tournament is scheduled for
the Hensall arena, Saturday of this week.
It's a Western Ontario Athletic Association pee wee
tourney with teams from Brussels, Milverton, Lucknow,
Teeswater and Hensall competing.
The first game will be at nine o'clock in the morning
featuring Brussels and Hensall with the championship game
slated for seven o'clock in the evening.
Admission for adults is one dollar for the entire day or
fifty cents per game. The all-day student charge is fifty
cents and children will pay a quarter.
Special congratulations to a group of curlers represen-
ting the Exeter Legion who have qualified to participate in
the Ontario Legion curling finals in Trenton in the middle of
February.
A rink skipped by Jim Hewitt won the district cham-
pionship in Hanover Sunday and earned the right to play for
the Ontario title. Eight other districts will be represented in
the final round robin series.
Each member of the Ontario championship rink will
bring home a snowmobile for his efforts. In addition to skip
Hewitt the Exeter rink is comprised of Pres Lavier, Peter
Raymond and Jake Marks.
Answers — Ted Lindsay, who played for Detroit and
Chicago totalled 1,808 minutes in penalties to go along with
379 goals in 17 seasons in the NHL.
The New York Rangers blasted the California Seals for
eight goals in one period in a game in November, 1971, The
final score was 12-1.
Questions — What is the record for most consecutive
NHL 'games played and by whom?
Which active NHL player leads the league in career hat
tricks?
