Ausable Bayfield Conserv-
ation Authority Superintendent
John Hodgins reported to Mon-
days' annual meeting 0.11, ac-
tivities of his section. during 1974
"During the winter of twz the
Authority's permanent work staff
of 6 and 14 men hired under the
Winter Works program spent a
good deal of time brushing and
cutting dead elm, mostly in the
Parkhill area.
The Winter Works program
also permitted renovation of part
of the Peterson barn as a
workshop and storage area. it is
hoped to complete this renovation
as a project of the Winter Works
crew during this coming winter.
To settle
Ausable tie
The tie for first place which has
existed in the Ausable Valley Rec
hockey league for a couple of
weeks could be settled Sunday
night,
The two co-leaders Ailsa Craig
and Lieury meet in the first half
of Sunday's doubleheader. Each
club has a total of 10 points. The
Shipka Bulldogs have three
points and Brinsley a single
point.
In this week's action Ailsa
Craig bounced Shipka by a score
of 9-3 and Lieury edged Brinsley
4-2.
Larry Dobbinson went on a
scoring binge and scored enough
goals necessary to get the Ailsa
Craig win over Shipka. Dob-
binson fired four successful shots
while Dave Collins was close
behind with a hat trick per-
formance. Bob Donaldson and
Gwen Griffiths checked in with
single goals.
Scoring in single fashion for
Shipka were Shane Burley, Bob
Lovie and Rene Boggemans.
George Walsh with a two goal
effort was best for Lieury. Single
scores were added by Wayne
Ropp and Phil Glavin.
Jack Conlin was on the firing
end of both goals for the losing
Brinsley club.
Members of the Ausable—
Bayfield Conservation Authority
heard a report at the annual
meeting Monday of the success of
this summer's SWEEP program.
For the second successive
summer the Provincial Govern-
ment has provided a summer
employment program for
students, Under the auspices of
the Conservation Authorities
Branch of the Ministry of Natural
Resources, each of the Provin-
ce's 38 authorities participated in
the program.
Twenty - two secondary and
post-secondary students were
hired to work for the Ausable
Bayfield Conservation Authority.
Throughout July and August
these students were involved in
many environmental projects on
both Authority properties and
municipal lands,
Brushing, road and stream
cleanup, painting, and erosion
control were projects done for
Hensall, Grand Bend, Seaforth,
Bayfield, Clinton, West Williams
Veteran driver
named to hall
One of Canada's outstanding
harness horsemen, veteran Clint
Hodgins, has been named to the
Living Harness Horse Hall of
Fame, at Gosehn, N.Y.
The 65-year-old native of
Clandeboye, who still maintains a
farm there, but spends most of
his time at Orlando, Fla,, was
notified of the honor in a letter
from William Connolly,
Trotting
nnolly, of the
United
Association, a few days ago.
Hodgins will be recognized at
the 25th annual U.S. Harness
Writer's Awards night at
Philadelphia's Liberty Bell
track, on Feb. 25. His long
driving career started back in
1928 when he was in the sulky for
the first time at the Exeter Fair
races.
When he isn't at his Clandeboye
farm, he lives at Orlando, only a
few short blocks from Ben White
Raceway.

from their park down to the lake
was built for Hay Township, and
a special demonstration
lakeshore erosion control project
was undertaken, using gabion
groins, in the Village of Bayfield,
In the Authority's conservation
areas the work involved:—
building a footbridge, shelter,
and portion of trail at Morrison
Dam C.A., plus painting
buildings, posts, repair of
culvert, removal of old fence,
trimming and brushing, and
weed removal from reservoir.
Holy Trinity Anglican Church,
The Anglican Church Women
met in the home of Mrs. Lillian
King last Wednesday afternoon.
The meeting was opened by the
president Mrs. Violet Hardy.
Rev. R,A. Carson led in the Bible
Study and showed two film strips
in 'How we got our Christmas
customs" and "What Christmas
means." The ladies exchanged
gifts and enjoyed a lovely lunch
provided by Mrs. Kay Haggar
and Mrs. Gladys Roberts.
Sunday, the flowers in the
church were from the funerals of
Mrs. Pauline Zubal and Clare
Bryan. Three members of the
choir,, Naren .11enderson, Julie
Henderson arid Karen tindscin
sang as a trio during the offering.
Lucan Revival Centre
The church was full Sunday
evening with parents and others
who enjoyed the annual Sunday
School Christmas Program. John
Armitage opened the program
with Karen Dykeman singing a
welcome song, Among the
musical numbers were: a trio of
Allan Melanson, Mrs. M.
Dykeman and Joan Lockyer.
Marlene Butler and Doug Butler
each sang a solo.
Three of the Sunday School
classes performed the Christmas
pageant of the birth in
Congregation
entertained
Rev. Wilfred D. Jarvis con-
ducted the Communion service in
Carmel Presbyterian Church on
Sunday. His sermon subject was
"Take it, it is for Sinners". The
choir under the direction of Mrs,
Malcolm Dougall sang a
Christmas hymn,
The Young People of the
church participated in a "Candle
Light Service" at the Emmanuel
United Church in Zurich Sunday
evening.
At Parkhill C.A. a nature trail
was developed, buildings stained,
and assistance given with grass
cutting and trimming; general
cleanup work was undertaken at
Rock Glen C.A. in addition to
some brushing and painting, and
two weeks were spent brushing
and clearing on the newly
acquired Corrie Property near
Clinton.
The students also assisted in
gatehouses, in the food con-
cession booth at Parkhill, on
general park maintenance, in
conducting a park -user survey.

Lisa Compton played three
accordion solos of Christmas
carols. The boys class performed
a skit on 'Rocketry.'
The youth centre performed a
two act skit they wrote and
produced themselves of A
Christmas Behind the Berlin Wall
bringing out the dangers
Christians face trying to have
Christmas in Communist lands.
At the end of the program, a
gift of money was presented to
Rev, and Mrs. Elvin Thornton
which they appreciated.
Ed, Butler and his boys class
handed out gifts to students and
teachers.
St. James Church
The new rug has been installed
in the church hall by the women
of the Church. It is a beautiful
bright green, that gives the
basement a warm inviting at-
mosphere.

Arms' He said Advent bids us to
put on the armour of God and
prepared' to do battle with the
forces of evil. He said just as God
is a mystery, so evil is a mystery.
