Exeter veterinarian honored by Ontario association

Two area veterinarians were
named to the executive
of Western Ontario Veterinary
Medical Association during the
group's annual conference held in
London, Wednesday,
Dr. G. L, Leitch of Zurich is the
president and Dr. Gaylan
Josephson of Exeter is the
secretary-treasurer. Dr.
Josephson is the retiring
president.
At the same time Dr, G. R.
Doidge of Exeter was honored for
serving 27 years on the executive
including 10 years as secretary-
treasurer.
• One of the guest speakers at the
conference said although
agricultural scientists have done
better than average in controlling
pollution, the industry can't
expect its luck to hold,
"It (agriculture) must take
41{
first place with other modern
industries with the capability of
excess production and harmful
wastes," said Dr. D, N. Huntley,
executive director of research for
the Ontario agriculture and food
industry.
"We should take it for granted
• that agriculture will bewatched,"
he continued.
He predicted that pollution
from animal wastes can be
controlled, although the price of
meat will rise and the farmer's
profit margin will be cut.
"When this happens is
anybody's guess - it should
happen at the same time as city
air is fit to breathe and the no-
swimming signs go down in urban
beaches and rivers.

from their distribution on the
land,
"To prevent the distribution of
increased animals units from
aggravating the pollution
problem, it is necessary to rely on
the collection and com-
munication of facts or the
establishment of regulations or a
code of practice,"
At the same conference a
Detroit veterinarian said dogs do
adopt their owner's personalities.

W. K. McKersie.
The dogs reciprocate "as far as
their mental capacity allows," by
adopting the quirks of their
owners,
For some people, dogs even
become a "child replacement,"-
said Dr. McKersie, a native of
Rockwood, Ont. and a graduate
of the Ontario Veterinary College
at Guelph.

replacement, a companion, a
plaything, or a possession."
Owners who treat their dogs as
children, "indulge them too
much," the doctor said,
This leads to undisciplined,

stipation."
Dr. McKersie also discussed
"cardiac canines" - dogs with
heart disease - and the tricky
question of how to tell an owner
his pet should be killed.
He pointed out that some
people who care about their pets
can't afford drawn-out treat-
ment.
Heart disease is fairly common
in dogs, sometimes to the point
where the slightest exertion will
make an animal pass out,
He listed foods to be avoided by
cardiac canines because they
contain too much salt. Among

"Too much food," is the cause
of most medical problems in
dogs, he said.
