ROSS have owned Roy's. United Church near Russeldale for three and one-half years, .and just recently, they decided if they were going to do something with it, now was the time. Well, now is the time, and last weekend, Mrs. Smith, who also owns Shirley's Canadian Crafts, Grand Bend, held the official opening of her newest arts and crafts shop, The Country Spire Gift Studio. She calls it a "Pre-opening" rather than an opening, because there is still much work to be done, in the church, and in the organization of the shop, But she has a wide range of goods on display, including Canadian work, contributions by local craftsmen and imported items. As much as is possible, Mrs, Smith is trying to capture the original personality of the church. All the stained glass windows are in the church and Mrs. Wilson's mother, Mrs. James Murray, in Arkona. Donna Wilson was celebrating a bir- thday. Murray Abbott returned home Friday evening following a two week holiday at the home of his son and daughter-in-law Mr. & Mrs. Clayton Abbott, Linwood, California and attended the wedding of his granddaughter Linda Abbott. He was ac- companied on the trip by his daughter,. Mrs. James Mugford and Julie, Lucan. Mr. & Mrs. James Gaunt have moved into their new home. Mr. & Mrs. Oscar Greb,- Zurich were Sunday evening guests with Mr. & Mrs. ,Ken Greb. Mr, & Mrs. Fred Bowden were Sunday visitors with Mr. & Mrs. Ray Paynter, David and Anne Marie, Kirkton. By MRS. As of yet, all the goOds are displayed in the one large room which was the congregational section of the church, -- Eventually, however, Mrs. Smith hopes to be able to designate certain areas by partitions. and natural organization of furniture, for specific items. For example, in one corner, she hopes to simulate the appearance of a life size children's house, with all her games a ndother children's gifts in that corner. Some of the gifts featured at the Country Spire are German and Canadian weaving, pewter jewelry by Guy Vidal, a large display of Canadian pottery, as well as candles, wall hangings, beautiful woollen ponchos and many other varieties of unusual gifts. Mrs. Smith said her major wish is to establish a homey type at- moshpere, but with a good selection and a good quality of merchandise. In addition to the gifts them- selves, Mrs. Smith will be opening a tea-room during the locatedslnlnle summer onntlhoel Iths. stage This h e will f ront beef the church. Much of the trade in her Grand Bend store depends on the tourists who visit the area in the *summer. She hopes, however, that the tea-room in the summer, and craft classes in the winter, as well as the shop itself will help develop a set of regular customers, as well as the tourist trade. Mrs, Smith has been con- ducting craft classes for some time, and will continue to do so throughout the winter, in hair pin lacd, pearl jewelry making, mod podge and petal dip. They are conducted in the basement of the church, which the Smiths are in the process of fixing up as their home. They still have con- siderable work to do, however, Mrs. Smith said they have had "great support from the Exeter people", especially in her classes. She also said that all of the neighbors around The County Spire have been terrific in con- tributing food, help in renovations and just general moral support. 6 -V olaroid and Kodak FI Cameras LM ono/ FLASHBULBS LAURA SECORD Taste Tre For Men • Brut • Russian Leather • Black Belt • Old Spice at Canclies For Lollies • Faberge: • Chanel • Prince Malchab • Bourgeois seen Play euchre at Centralia tl 1 4,
