Most of the accidents in- vestigated this week by the Lucan detachment of the Ontario Provincial Police occurred on Sunday and resulted from slippery road conditions, Of the five accidents reported Sunday, four involved only one vehicle which in each case went out of control on the slippery roads. The first of these amendments removes the penalty imposed on recipients who own and occupy their own homes valued in excess of $10,000. Previously, in cases such as these, the WVA, or CWA recipient was deemed to be in receipt of income if his residence was valued above this amount and consequently his allowance was reduced proportionately. Now there will not be any reduc- tion in the monthly WVA or CWA cheques for recipients because of the value of their residences. The second amendment an- nounced by Mr. Laing, which will benefit those recipients who own their own homes, affects those who sell their homes, or suffer loss because of damage or destruction to them, Previously the amount of money in excess of $10,000 paid to a WVA or CWA recipient for the sale of his home, or as proceeds of insurance coverage in cases of damage or destruction, was assessed as income in an amount equal to 5% of the excess over $10,000. "This penalty is now removed on condition that the money from the sale, or insurance proceeds, will be used within one year to purchase another house." I am sure this will be good news to some and if any Comrade wishes any further information or assistance may we suggest you contact your Branch Service Officer or your nearest office of D. V.A. With all this weather it's sure hard to get into the Christmas spirit, maybe I should rephrase that and say instead 'into the Spirit of Christmas'. However, we must face the fact the Jolly Chap will make his visit in less than a month, where does the time fly. Members are reminded 540's Children's Christ- mas Party will be held on Satur- day, December 16. The party will commence around 2:00 p.m. with a suitable program for the again blamed for the mishap. Damages to both cars were estimated at $650. Two accidents Friday were both of the hit and run variety, Shortly after 7 p.m. on County road 23, just south of Concession road 15 in London township, a vehicle driven by Robert Shrub- sole, 563 Mornington, London was struck by an oncoming unknown vehicle. Damage was listed at $150. Later the same evening a vehi- cle driven by Edward Hunter- Duvar , 68 Huron Street, Exeter, northbound on Highway 4, near Mooresville was sideswiped by a vehicle which failed to stop. You are also reminded the draw for Comrade Dandy Boy will be held soon. Remember the proceeds will be placed in the building fund, which incidently is growing slowly but surely. Help Branch 540 supply the facilities which will meet our need by participating. Plans are all ready for 540's 1972-73 New Year's Frolic. Sales will be restricted to members of Branch 540 only until December 15, after which they will go on sale to the general public on a first come first served basis. So for a real swinging time it's Branch 540 for this New Years. We still have a few Royal Canadian Mounted Police 1973 Centennial Calendars. These are most impressive calendars depicting the life of the mountie over the past 100 years by a Canadian Artist and I believe will be a collectors item before long. This is the second shipment we brought in from Regina and the supply is very limited. If you are interested see the branch stewards. Hear this all Slim Gordon fans — Slim will be returning to Branch 540 on Saturday evening December 9. What you want is what you get. You asked for Slim Gordon — You get Slim Gordon, For real professional entertain- ment remember it's Branch 540 Saturday, December 9. Why not get a group together and come on over to Action Center; where you are a Stranger only once. And that's 30 for this week, remember — An expert is one who is just beginning to unders- tand how little he knows about the subject. Canada has the longest national coast line in the world, In view of the upcoming municipal elections across the province Monday, the Times- Advocate conducted a survey of all persons contesting seats on municipal councils in this area. The following questions were posed to each candidate: 1) What do you believe are the main issues in your municipality and what is your stand on them'? 2) Why should voters support your bid for election? LAWRENCE G. HOTSON 1. I believe that the main issues of the Village of Lucan are: (a) the conditions of the side streets — understandably where the sewer construction is in progress they are in very poor condition, but we have streets where the construction has been completed for over a year and they are still barely possable. (b) the dirt on our newly paved streets — I believe that our paved streets should be cleaned on a regular basis. (c) some small industry for Lucan to employ our citizens and balance the economy of the ,Village between homeowners and business. 2. I hope the voters support me because I have a varied background and I believe I can contribute something to the Village of Lucan. I will do my very best for the people of Lucan in any capacity on the council if I am elected. HARRY WRAITH 1. A contract for garbage dis- posal should be tendered and signed for a period of time so residents and contractor alike know where they stand. An equalized assessment value would give the village a larger share of taxes as so much goes to the school board and county that it leaves the village with very little money to make any im- provements to roads, sidewalks, buying of equipment, etc., and just enough for local maintenance. "Our children get too little ice time although we built and paid for the Arena" is a too familiar cry heard from Lucan and dis- trict people. The reason for this is that contrary to Provincial Regulations and although it is possibly the only one in Ontario to do so, Lucan has always made its Arena be self-supporting. To do this, very few improvements have been made in the past 23 years and ice time has been sold to the highest bidder to keep revenue up. I would like to see the Arena put on the village mill rate so that improvements can be kept up-to-date and allow the ice time and use of the facilities to be given back to the people of Lucan and district. 2. I ask for the support of the voters of Lucan as I have been a previous member of council for three years and on the Arena Board for five years, I was very interested in and promoted our new well and pumping station, assisted in the new highway plan- ning and construction of Market St., and budgeted money for a town work shop which is present- ly nearing completion. As you can see, I was not a lost member of council and feel I helped Lucan progress in the past and am willing to do so in the future if elected. WILLIAM MATHERS 1. I believe the main issues in our municipality are as follows: Zoning and planning to insure orderly growth of our village which we have now almost com- pleted the first stage; More recreation facilities in the park for our senior citizens and children; Make further improvements to our dressing and washrooms at the community centre. As we have enlarged our water and sewage systems, I feel we are now ready to encourage in- dustries to locate in our municipality. Further improvements to our streets and sidewalks are also needed. 2. I believe I should be sup- ported by the voters of our municipality because due to the extensive undertakings in the past few years of our Council To The Electors of LUCAN If given the opportunity to serve you on the council, I Shall serve to the best of my ability. Mrs. VINA EMERY BIDDULPH VOTERS I Request YOUR Support on Dec. 4 ELECT Frank Hardy to Biddulph Township Council A lifelong Biddulph resident farming on the fifth concession, interested in honest, straightforward service to the community.
