Waxers get point
in mite hockey
The Exeter Waxers saw action
on two occasions this week and
came away with a single point
for their efforts in exhibition
mite play.
Wednesday night at the Exeter
arena, the Waxers were downed
5-1 by St. Marys and Saturday
night back in St. Marys the local
boys bounced back with a late
third period rally to gain a 1-1 tie.
With time running out in St.
Marys Saturday night, Tom
Coates blocked a clearing St.
Marys pass and broke in on the
St. Marys goalie and blasted a
hard shot into the net to give the
Waxers a draw.
In the Wednesday night loss to
St. Marys, Scott Pincombe was
the lone Waxer marksman. Pin-
combe stole the puck from a St.
Marys defenceman and with the
help of Tom Coates was able to
fire a successful shot.
The Waxers will be back in
action Friday night at the Exeter
arena when they take on
Goderich at 6.45 prior to the
Hawk's junior game against
Lucan.

it
happened
ft was bound to happen and it finally did, The Exeter
Hawks lost a game in OHA Junior "D" play. After winning
their first eight games this shouldn't come as any great
surprise to any hockey observer.
The Hawks have excuses for their first defeat as three
players are out with injuries and two other top performers
were also out of the line-up for various reasons in Clinton,
Sunday night, but excuses are not necessary,
All clubs in the league can come up with a big game on
any given night and a loss is good for any club. Now coach
Bob White needs to get his charges back on another winning
streak.
Friday's game at the Exeter arena should draw the best
'rowd of the season to date as the Lucan Irish will be in for
heir first appearance of the year. The Lucan club with
ieteran Steve Storey handling the coaching reins has been
turning in good performances and will give a good account
of themselves.
We hear another good junior club and one which is
Familiar to the Hawks and local fans is also on a lengthy
winning streak.
We heard this week, the Fergus Green Machine remains
undefeated in the South-Central junior league and are
-xpecting to get another chance at the Hawks in the playoffs
-igain this year.
This could happen only if both clubs reach the finals as
the OHA has already changed the playoff pattern for the
spring of 1973. The winner of the local western grouping will
meet the Southern Counties` winner in the first round. This
would be teams from the Caledonia, Simcoe, Delhi area
meeting the Hawks in the first round if they do win the local
grouping championship.
The other first round would have the north and south-
central groupings taking a crack at each other with the two
victors meeting for the Ontario crown.
A former pee wee and bantam performer in local minor
ranks, Rob Ryckman is a regular with the Fergus Green
Machine this year and in a clipping we received this week he
scored a goal and also participated in a fight.
Fergus coach Paul Cook said after a recent game he
\las getting better performances from his hitting depart-
-lent led by 230 pound John Cunningham from Arthur.
The Fergus coach added, "This is what we have needed
'or a couple of years. Last year if a team put on the pressure
'e guys used to back off."
Football ends
The Canadian football season officially comes to a close
:unday afternoon with the playing of the Grey Cup game.
If the battle for the old battered cup donated many
-ears ago by Governal General Lord Grey has the same
ype of finish as the Eastern and Western Canadian finals,
the more than 30 thousand fans will be in for plenty of
vxcit em en t.
Sunday's game played on the tartan field surface at Ivor
Wynne stadium should provide plenty of diversified attacks
by both clubs.
The Tiger Cats' Dave Buchanan and George Reed of the
Saskatchewan Roughriders have the ability to break loose
with long hard running.
Each quarterback has shown he has the ability to gain
yards through the air and has plenty of capable receivers.
Chuck Ealey of the Hamilton club has Garney Henley,
Tommy Joe Coffey and Louis Porter,, to name only a few
possible receivers.
Saskatchewan signal caller Ron Lancaster should be
hitting fellows like Gord Barwell, Allan Ford and Tom
f:'ampana. We are going to give the edge in a very close
game to Hamilton due to the running and scrambling
'bathes of signal caller Chuck Ealey.
Here goes our prediction. The first we have attempted
1 quite some time. Hamilton 26 - Saskatchewan 22.

an NHL defenceman in one game?
Closer competition
The newly formed Senior "B" grouping of the Ontario
Hockey Association promises to provide plenty of exciting
and close action this year,
All teams in the league seem to be strong and capable of
coming up with big games. This was proved this week as the
Woodstock Royals off to a poor start came up with their
second win of the year by downing the Durham Huskies 9-4.
At the same time, the LuCan-Ilderton Jets have evened
their season record off at four wins and the same number of
losses.
