Keep A WORKER
Working For You!
Over the past eight years it has been my pleasure to serve
on behalf of the citizens of Exeter. I have never begrudged the
time I have been required to spend away from my business,
social and family life to look after your problems. On many
occasions I have been called upon to investigate road and
sewer problems and I am certainly willing to carry on this
tradition of service.
Two years ago, I urged other members of council to take
the position of deputy-reeve. None came forth and I
volunteered my services to represent the town in Huron county
council. I have nowlearned the ropes" and am in a position to
give even stronger representation in that capacity.
In 1973, it is my expectation to be named chairman of the
county property committee and because of some resignations
by other members, my experience will be a definite asset in
this regard,
The work of county council must remain strong if we are to
retain local autonomy in our government. Experience is
required.
The position of deputy-reeve was open to my opponent two
years ago and turned down. Having stepped in to fill this
need, I now solicit your support in retaining that position and
putting my experience to work for you.

Circulation has risen at the
Exeter Library, says librarian
Mrs. ElizabethSchroeder,and she
feels at least part of the reason is
because of the public school tours
which have been coming
regularly to the library.
The past week was Young
Canada Book Week, and Mrs.
Schroeder was commenting on
the fact that the library has had a
steady increase in the circulation
of children's books since the
tours started,
Each week, a different class
from Exeter public school visits
the library, is read a story by the
children's librarian, Mrs, Lorne
Porter and then have the oppor-
tunity to select and take out a
book.
Mrs. Schroeder said the cir-
culation in the upper section of
the library is continuing to be
very high. She said that new
books are coming all the time
from the Huron County Library
at Goderich and this is one of the
reasons for high circulation.
She said that because of the
school tours, there was no special
program set up for Young
Canada Book Week, but she

immediate forefront in dealing
with the problems of waste dis-
posal. There is already talk of
garbage trains from large urban
areas to dumping grounds in
rural Ontario. We don't want
that!
It's time for municipal govern-
ment to take a position of
leadership. We have our sewage
disposal problems and we have
our garbage disposal problem.
It's partially soluble by
recycling and partially soluble by
eliminating much of our
ridiculously ornate packaging
and by using increasing numbers
of returnable containers for
everything from liquor to
pickles. Make the deposit on the
container sufficiently high to en-
sure their return.
This is only one area where we
need more leadership at the
municipal level in Ontario.
Municipal government has all of
the authority and power it needs
if it will use it.
Yours truly,

Dear Sir:
I would like to express my
concurrance with your editorial
concerning the garbage disposal
problem. Your final paragraph
refers to two of the major
obstacles standing in the way of
the campaign against the forces
of environmental and ecological
decline.
You use the phrase "easy way
of life" and you refer to cost.
There is no doubt that we should,
as a society, challenge the
necessity of consuming so much
material that serves no valid
purpose at all.
Our municipalities are not able
to halt the increasing use of
disposable bottles, cartons,
paper, etc. We could, at the local
level, however, initiate two
programs, one of which you have
suggested, viz, provision of a
better means of garbage disposal
by municipal cooperation.
A second program should bb
done in conjunction with the
first, Local municipalities could
begin a program of recovering
reusable materials from the
mounting garbage. Paper, card-
board, metals and glass are being
recycled now.
Surely Exeter and area could
examine the possibility of
recovering such materials, fin-
ding the recycling locations and
arranging for delivery.
It would add somewhat to the
cost but some revenue would
accrue to partially offset the cost
and the rate of garbage ac-
cumulated in dump areas would
be somewhat slowed. Such a
program would require that
householders sort garbage but
this is now required in some areas
and is only a minor in:
convenience.
Municipal government is the
level of government that is in the
