Crash: damage high
Damages totaled chase to $6,000
in four accidents investigated.
this week by -officers .ef the
Lucan Detachment of the Ontario
Provincial Police,
The most serious occurred at
5.25 Monday afternoon when
vehicles. driven by Gordon
Russell. Brown, Grand Bend and
Kenneth A. Smith, London
collided at the Concession 2 road
and Lot 20-21 intersection in
McGillivray township.
Both drivers were taken to St.
Joseph's Hospital by Seaforth
Ambulance. The Brown vehicle
was damaged to the tune of $1,500
and the Sinith car, a 1972 model
suffered .$3,000 damages.
Saturday afternoon at 1. p.m.
officers found a stolen car in the
ditch on Concession road 3 and 4
in West Nissouri township. The
car owned by Douglas McLellan,
RR 7, St. Marys was stolen from
the London detachment area,
It suffered .$700 damages while
going through the ditch and
taking off 100 feet of fence on the
property of Cecil Bridgeman.
Only a half hour earlier
vehicles driven by Verne Arthur
Watson of Woodstock and
Kenneth Gordon Loft, Hyde Park
were involved in a collison on No.
4 highway, near Birr, Damages
were listed at $675.
The other accident took place
early Friday evening when Betty
Scanlon, 425 Dundas street, Lon-
don was struck by an eastbound
vehicle on No. 4 highway at the
easterly end of the curve at
Clandeboye.
Mrs. Scanlon aged 73 was a
pedestrian after alighting from a
bus. She was taken to St.
Joseph's Hospital, London where
her condition this week was
reported as critical. The car was
driven by Helen E. Eagleson, RR
3, Parkhill. The subject of street and
sidewalk repair came to the fore
at the November meeting of
Lucan council Monday night.
Council was approached by a new
resident of the town, Ron King,
who complained that there was a
permanent pool of water on the
sidewalk in front of his home. He
said the sidewalk is sloping and
catches and holds all the mud and
water.
Mr, King said he realizes that a
lot of people in town don't even
have sidewalks, but added that he
had had the same problem in his
former home, so he thought he
would try to get it cleared away.
Councillor Elizabeth Goddard
said she had received several
complaints about the messy con-
dition of Main Street. The main
complaints are of dust and the
untidy appearance of the street.
Council agreed, however, that
little could be done until the
heavy trucks working in other
parts of town have completed
their work.
Reeve Ivan Hearn reported on
several streets that are
becoming "potted" and badly
rutted. "People are hollering
about some of this stuff and
we're just not getting it done",
said the Reeve.
In discussion which followed, it
was pointed out that just putting
gravel on the road would not be
sufficient repair in some cases.
It was decided to advise gravel

Sunday morning a set of corner
display shelves in the front en-
trance of Zion United Church was
presented in memory of Mr. &
Mrs. Jacob Ratz by the family.
Gordon Ratz made the presen-
tation on behalf of the family,
recalling how important the
church was in the lives of his
parents. Rev. Douglas Warren
accepted the donation on behalf
of the congregation, and
dedicated the memorial.
On one shelf is an English Bible
from the church that once stood
on the sideroad across from
Sharon Public School; on the
other, a German Bible dating
from the early years of Zion
Church.
Personals
I Crediton Youth Group held
their Hallowe'en party recently.
Several games were played and
several took part in a bob for
apples. Some came dressed up
and the costumes were judged,
The winners were Barbara Pfaff,
and grading where possible, and
to dig out some of the more
serious ruts.
A motion was passed to pay
Bill Neil $50 for land used to
make room for rip rap to be
placed on the northerly end of the
culvert on Main St.
Council was also approached
by Harry Arnold, who questioned
the feasibility of installing his
own sewers. Mr. Arnold said he
had three properties, including
Lucan Bowl, which he would like
to service, and he wondered if he
could get permission to do it
himself.
Council explained that there
were three angles to the
proposal. Mr. Arnold could buy a
permit for $2 and let someone
else dig it for him but if the
person was not eligible to dig in
the village of Lucan, Mr. Arnold
would hjpve to purchase a permit
of $25. This binds the digger to
responsibility for a year for the
sewers, Council said that as long
as Mr. Arnold obtained the $25
permit and took responsiblity for
a year he could probably do it
himself if he had the equipment.
The subject of parking around
the corner by the municpal of-
fices was , also raised. Road
superintendent Bert Thompson
said it was dangerous because
people parked so close to the
corner, and because there was
little room for through traffic
on the sidestreet. He suggested
Harry Schroeder and Brenda
Neil. Paul Fydenchuk-gave a talk
on drugs.
Laura Mathers spent the
weekend with Mr. & Mrs. Paul
Medcalf, London. Her niece and
nephew took her to visit Mr. &

U.C.W. attended the November
meeting of the U.C.W,. of Cen-
tralia United Church last
Thursday,

Mrs. Will Oestricher were Mr. &
Mrs. Wilbert Teeple, Bowman-
vill e.

the weekend were Mr. & Mrs.
Robert Greenwood and their four
children, Don Mills.
Rev. James Somerville, Lon-
don, in the area for the Starv-In

the morning service of Zion
United Church.
that "No parking here to corner"
signs be placed where ap-
propriate, and "No parking on
this side" be placed on one side
of the street. He said he already
has the signs, but just has to find
a way to erect them.
The question of Christmas
decorations for Main St. were
discussed. Council said the old
decorations will not fit on the
new cement light standards on
the street. It was decided that
council should investigate the
different kinds of decorations,
and Clifford Abbott and Mrs.
Goddard were assigned to a com-
mittee. Reeve Hearn said it
would be better to build up a
supply of quality decorations
slowly, and not to hurry into
anything, even if it means a
dearth of decorations this year.
Council also decided to have a
ratepayers meeting November 15
for the benefit of the voters of
Lucan. Nomination sheets for the
municipal election may be picked
up from the clerk's office, only
