T-A photo Minors get two victories The Lucan Irish continued their unbeaten record in Ontario Hockey Association Junior "D" play this week with two con- secutive wins. The Irish now have three wins and a tie in four league starts. Wednesday the Irish whipped the Clinton Mustangs by a score of 10-5. Ron Funston led the scoring with four goals, Craig Corman pat three away; Rick Funston scored twice and Mike. McIntyre notched one. Clinton was leading the Irish 5- 3 at the end of the first period on three goals by Phil Petrie and one each by Torn Murray and Mike Anstette, The Irish came back in the second period full steam not let- ting Clinton get another goal the rest of the game. Sunday the Irish took the Bel- mont Sunsets 3-2 in Belmont, This was a fast skating exciting game. Bob Evans, Jim Macklem and Ron Funston put the puck away for the Irish while Jerry Hewett and Tim Bertelson scored for Belmont. It looks to me, sitting on the side lines, that coach Storey is going to have a good team this year. The boys seem to like and respect their coach and the feeling seems to be returned. This attitude is sure to create enthusiasm among those con- nected with the team. As you well know it takes a lot of people to make a home game Minors sweep Huron Park set The Exeter pee wees and midgets scored decisive victories over Huron Park clubs in minor hockey league play at the Huron Park arena, Tuesday night. The pee wees chalked up a 12-0 decision while the midgets won by a score of 10-0. Randy Fisher led the Exeter peewee attack with a four goal performance. Next in line with a hat trick effort was Paul Pooley and Steve Skinner scored twice, Adding single goals were Ran- dy Parsons and Darrell and Den- nis Preszcator, Randy Regier with three goals was top scorer in the midget game, Checking in with two goals each were Larry Clarke and Brian Taylor. Single goals were notched by John Vriese, Wayne Regier and Dave Regier. T-A photo Hawks get third consecutive win later, Pete Glover notched his second score of the night with Brian Campbell assisting. At 9.44, he was right back to com- plete the hat trick on a solo effort. The final Hawk markers came on good passing efforts. Gerald Weido finalized the first corn- The first home ice tripleheader for Exeter minor clubs par- ticipating in the Shamrock hockey league resulted in two wins and a loss Wednesday night against Belmont. The Ex, ter pee wees started the night off on the right foot with a 4-0 shut-out over Belmont. The bantams followed suit and chalked up a fairly decisive 6-2 decision. The third game, in the midget division gave Belmont a 5-0 victory. Defenceman Darrell Presz- cator scored two goals to lead the Exeter pee wee win over Bel- mont. Adding single goals were Randy Risher and Brad Taylor, Ted Triebner and Jim Veri shared goal, tending duties and the shutout. In the bantam contest, Exeter scored the first four goals of the game and were never in serious trouble. Paul Shapton was the top Exeter marksman with the first and last goals of the game. Adding single markers in between were Larry Clarke, Doug Osgood, Steve Baynham and Paul Van Gerwen.' In the first game of the season played earlier, the Exeter and Lucan bantamsplayed to a 4-4 tie. Ken Pinder notched a pair of goals to head the Exeter scoring while singles were added by ,Larry Clarke and Mort Obre. Rick Freeman with a two goal effort was best for Lucan, Single goals were fired by Jim Senn and, Gerry Moon. five times in the third period in a cleanly played contest in which only 10 minor penalties were called. Each team was called for five of the minor infractions. The first two minutes of the final frame produced the third Exeter goal of the night. Peter Kleinstiver took a pass from Perry Stover and deposited the puck in the Lambeth nit. A little more than a minute each team scored three times in the second period. Strathroy, out- scoring the Hawks 2-1 in the first 17 minutes of play in the third tied the score at 8.8 and set the stage for Glover's two successful shots. The first period Exeter goals were notched by Brian Bestard, Pete Glover, Murray Parsons and Harry Smits. Brian Campbell and Randy Gilfillan set up Dave Beer for the final counter at 15.02. Friday night's game which ended in a 10-8 win for the Hawks was a nightmare for the goal tenders as the emphasis was on the offensive. The Hawks held a 4.3 edge after the first period of play and Dart standings tightening up The standings in the Exeter Legion mixed dart league tightened up considerably Friday night as the Canners scored five points and moved into undisputed possession of second place. The Sharpshooters continue to hold down first place with a total of 27 points while the Canners are only two points behind the leaders. The Late Niters follow in third place with 21 points while the Doublers are fourth with 20 points, Four teams, the BA's, Winkers, Shiphunters and DP's are tied for fifth place with 18 points apiece. Friday's scores were: Canners 5 — Scotties 0 Late Niters 5 — Featherflights 0 Dart Sharks 3 — BA's 2 Sharpshooters 3 — Swimmers 2 Itchy Four 3 — Doublers 2 Quiet Ones 3 — Dark Angles 2 BJ's 3 — Winkers 2 D.P's 3 — Shiphunters 2 This week's schedule is as follows: 7.30 p.m. DP's vs Sharpshooters BA's vs Featherflights Doublers vs Scotties Quiet Ones vs Swimmers 9 p.m. Dark Angels vs BJ's Winkers vs Shiphunters Canners vs Itchy Four Late Niters vs Dart Sharks WEAR A POPPY IN GRATEFUL REMEMBRANCE Gerry Smith BARBER SHOP 364 Main St. Exeter A statement by Exeter Hawks coach Bob White of a couple of weeks ago seems to be coming true. Before the season started, coach White said he would have his charges in top notch physical condition by the time the season started. Friday night, the Hawks won their second straight league game in as many starts by edging the Strathroy Falcons 10-8 and Sunday night in Lambeth they blanked the Flyers 7-0. Last year, the coach claimed lack of physical conditioning hampered the club from getting into high gear until Christmas time. The Hawks will try and make it four in a row at the Exeter arena Friday night when they take on the Clinton Mustangs. Two hat tricks In the two week-end wins for the Hawks, Pete Glover was the scoring star with three goal per- formances in each contest. Glover with a blistering slap shot scored the final two goals in the last three minutes of play Friday night to give the Hawks a 10-8 decision. Sunday night in Lambeth, his hat trick effort was again respon- sible in propelling the Hawks past the Flyers in reasonably easy fashion. The first period Sunday was scoreless as John 1-layter in the Exeter nets and his Lambeth counterpart Chris Whiteside were able to keep the scoresheet clear. The second period was less than three minutes old when a three way passing combination put the Hawks out in front to stay. Jim Guenther pulled the trigger on the successful shot with Peter Kleinstiver and Brian Bestard setting up the play. At 13.46, it was Glover getting started on his hat trick with a shot into the net with the assist going to Kevin Bestard. The Hawks were able to score Hockey fans in this area are in for a terrific year if the first few weeks of play is any indication of what is to come. In the district OHA Junior "D" grouping, the Exeter Hawks and Lucan Irish are both off to flying starts and at the moment are undefeated. The Hawks, defending provincial champions seem to have as much scoring. power as they did a year ago. Friday night against Strathroy, the defensive corps was a bit on the loose side in giving up eight goals but Sunday night in Lambeth it was quite a different story as the Flyers were unable to put any pucks past goalie John Hayter and a solid Hawk defence. Under the capable direction of coach Steve Storey, the Lucan Irish look like a formidable club and have three wins and a tie in their first four league starts. In the new Ontario senior "B" grouping, competition appears to be very close with most of the teams taking turns in beating each other. The Lucan-Ilderton Jets while dropping two of their first three contests have scored the same number of aggregate goals as their opposition. Sunday in Durham it was rematch of a long standing rivalry when the Jets and Huskies hooked up. In this game, the Huskies took a 2-0 decision in a game which Jet manager Don Urbshott called a "typical Durham game". The L-1 manager said the game was chippy and included a lot of rough stuff and heavy going. The other clubs in the league from London, Stratford, Preston, Bothwell and Woodstock appear to have well balanced line-ups which should ensure plenty of top notch action. The Exeter natives on the Lucan-Ilderton roster have been more than holding their own in the early season games. Seeing action with the Jets are defencemen Bill Bourne, Barry Baynham and Larry Willert and forwards Terry Bourne and Bill Fairbairn. Fairbairn has been especially effective in a scoring way. In the 7-6 loss a week ago to Stratford, he scored one goal and contributed three assists. Lots of Skaters A couple of weeks ago in this column we talked about the busy activities at the Exeter arena. Included in the many goings-on is probably the most ambitious program every enjoyed by an Exeter figure skating club. Registrations have now brought the number of boys and girls taking part in classes up to a record 176. A couple of more hours per week are being added to give the many skaters a chance to gain more ice time. Expert medical advice Anybody with a bad back? Call your friendly plumber. This is the advice offered by Stan Mikita of the Chicago Black Hawks who tore muscles and ligaments in his back on February 2, 1969 in a game against the Montreal Canadiens. Says Mikita, "We tried everything to reduce the pain. Heat treatment. Braces. A complete rest at the Mayo Brothers clinic in Minnesota, but nothing helped." "Finally in the summer of 1971, I'm on the phone to my plumber about a plumbing job around the house. The plumber says for a bad back call Dr. A. Hemwall in Oak Park, Illinois. So I go to Doc Hemwall and get 35 needles in the lower part of my back. He shot me full of liquid sugar. Three days later my back was a good as new." Mikita said he didn't pay his plumber any bonus for the medical advice. "Plumbers are already paid so much, that I think I'm in the wrong racket." Almost unbelievable You often hear fantastic fish stories about some large finny creature that got away on an ardent fisherman. Last week, we actually saw the fish stories come true. A lot of veteran anglers were amazed to find coho salmon in the Ausable river. Not in the river near Lake Huron, but actually in Riverview Park in Exeter. We were called up to the river late Wednesday afternoon when youngsters in the area found a dead coho. While we took their picture with a 29-inch salmon, other boys reported seeing bigger fish swimming around. Later the same night, it was a call from the George Dobbs home on Riverside Drive saying Bob and John had caught a 14 and 16 pound coho. This started things rolling and by early Thursday morning many fishermen were trying to catch one of the big ones. By the last count, nine of the coho salmon were caught in the local park. This is the farthest inland that we have ever heard of this type of fish being caught. Keep looking, fellows. You never know what might come up the river next. ( TA Quiz OHA Sr. B.
